For the spring pole cut I would not recommend making parallel cuts along the tension side. Small parallel cuts along the compression side eliminates the risk of the wood springing back toward the chainsaw (which occurred in the video)

If it’s small, guiding it will work but large trees can be much more difficult to guide if you aren’t proficient enough with a saw to make the proper cut. I have acreage and use a chainsaw to fell trees all the time but if I had a large tree leaning towards my house, I’d call a professional. Not only do they have the right equipment but are they much more skilled and are insured in case your house gets whacked.

So when you are cutting through a big trunk, you don’t recommend cutting half way through, rolling the log 180 degrees, and finishing the cut with the top of the bar?

1:46 is so dangerous I can't believe it came from Stihl. You never EVER cut your tension side first. If you want to release the potential energy gradually you do it on the compression side first with a shave cut or accordion cuts. Just insanely ridiculous this is a Stihl video. SMFH. Lawsuit waiting to happen.

Gee Kay funny I am getting my first chainsaw in the next week or so and for a long time I’ve been looking a how to safely use it. When I saw this i was very confused. Glad you commented. The fact that it split the way it did even looked dangerous

I think the compression side is likely to bind the top of the blade. They wanted to release the pressure gradually, and also prefer downward cuts. Thanks
