The Prophet was originally published in September 1923. This E-book edition is in the public domain in the United States and most other countries. It was released on January 1st 2019 for Project Gutenberg.
Description:
Khalil’s best known work, this poetic book contains 26 fables. It has been translated in over 100 languages and has never been out of print; selling 9 million copies in the US alone by 2012, and has sold more than 5,000 copies a week worldwide. Each chapter is paired with timeless drawings from Gibran himself.
Al Mustafa begins his tale sorrowful to leave Orphalese where he has lived for 12 years, to finally return home. Called a ‘Prophet of God’ by the seeress Almitra, he is beckoned by the people to share his wisdom on the human conditions of life. From marriage, children and friendship to reason, freedom and death, he outlines a spiritual treatise to live peacefully and with prosperity.
He continues by welcoming the appreciation of life’s mysteries, as every aspect of it is but a two-sided coin. How we should aim to see the good in all, even when faced with pain or defeat, as this keeps our souls light.
Just before setting sail, he hints that only after death is it clear, there’s always a pattern and purpose to each journey. He rightly reminds us that any separation we feel while on earth is false; that we are one, and in our commonalities and daily living, all should pay homage to infinite source.
About the Author:
Gibran Khalil Gibran was born in Bsharri, on Mount Lebanon, on January 6th 1883. Immigrating to America as a child, he became a writer, poet and artist and was widely considered a philosopher.
Born a Maronite Christian but influenced by Islamic, Baha’i and Sufi faiths strengthened Gibran’s belief in religious unity. His ties to Baha’i started around his meeting the Baha’i’s leader Abdul Baha, where he described he had "seen the Unseen, and been filled."
This occurred in 1912, about the same time Khalil began working on The Prophet and he “got the first motif for his Island God”.
Gibran returned to Beruit at fifteen to enroll at the College de la Sagesse, studying Arabic Literature and French. In 1904, Gibran's drawings were first displayed in Boston at Day's studio, and by the next year his first book was published in New York in Arabic.
Later, Khalil went on to live in Paris to study Art, from 1908-1910.
Back in New York by 1911, Gibran started writing his first English book The Madman, whilst simultaneously working on The Earth Gods and The Prophet.
By 1918, The Madman was completed and released and during this time Khalil was also displaying his visual artworks at galleries of M.Knoedler & Co. Most of these were classic, expressing his personal vision, mixed with mythological symbolism.
In 1920, Gibran and fellow Mahjari poets re-founded the Pen League. The Earth Gods was published in 1931; the same year as his passing, aged 48. He had achieved world fame and was deemed a literary hero in Lebanon. His was then returned to his village, where he renounced all his future royalties and today stands a museum dedicated to his works.
The epitaph on his grave reads:
'I am alive, like you. And I now stand beside you. Close your eyes and look around, you will see me in front of you.’
