I think its awesome how Lucius insulting the Grangers is what causes Mr. Weasley to snap and attack him immediately and then later in the book Malfoy insulting Hermione is what causes the Twins and Ron to all try to attack him causing Ron to end up burping slugs. It's like this beautiful glimpse into how much of an impact Mr. Weasley has had on his sons lives and how much they take after him in their belief system.

my point was that he tried to defend them despite the fact he barely knew them. Ron defending hermoine is courageous, but also they are best friends. Arthur was willing to start a fight with someone probably more powerful over people he just met. Because he stands up for what he believes in. The fact, that he barely knew them is relevant, because it speaks to his character.@user-os2gm6hv9l

Okay but hear me out. Percy passed his Divination OWLs by _using his Time Turner._ He saw what would happen one or more hours into the future, and then went back and predicted that happening. Genius strategy :D If nothing else, I could see Barty Crouch Jr doing it this way. Genius manipulator that he is.

I was reading through to see if anyone else had posted. Good job. I was thinking: “Hmmm, what possible means can someone with a Time Machine use to imitate skilled divination?” As to hypothesis of knowing trelawney well enough to fool her, that wouldn’t work for the OWL, as they are administered by testing wizards, not the teachers.

For the "Lucius's timing" bit, what if Dobby was ordered to intercept letters by Lucius so that he could learn when the Weasleys would go to Diagon Alley, and then Dobby used that order as permission to just nab ALL the letters and keep them, so that Harry thinks his friends abandoned him and won't go to school and fall into the trap? It's more of that "Dobby is exploiting every loophole he can think of" concept, which I personally adore. Seems to make sense of everything, at first glance.

One of the Weasley kids was the target for Lucius Malfoy! Dumbledore later in the book mentioned that if it can out that Arthur’s daughter was attacking people, his muggle protection bill would be out and Arthur would be out of a job. I think Lucius was intending to get Arthur out and his plan was to Frame the muggle loving Weasleys as muggle attackers

I don't think that Lucius thought of opening the chamber but who to get rid of the diary because he got it from Voldemort. He must have at least known that Voldemort did something to it but I doubt that Voldemort would've told him what. And since it was a muggle artifact as a diary from a muggle shop it would fall into the purview of Arthur. Later when the attacks started Lucius would know what the diary does.

I thought that was the case (American, but I've read/heard/watched a British thing or two). I wonder why "Master" came to mean a young boy and a very important person. Which came first? Why the shift from one to the other, or from some precursor to both of these?
@jackpownall2
@jackpownall2 5 ай бұрын
@@laser8389 From what I can gleam from Wiktionary, Master came first, then over time changing pronunciation transformed at least the title variant into Mister, while Master was kept for boys. Apparently Shakespeare was referred to as "Master Shakespeare" on one of his folios, and around Shakespeare time there was a massive linguistic change called the "great vowel shift", where vowels used in English were basically swapped around, so if I had to guess I’d say that was perhaps how Mister was created.

@@toriandtilly Mistress is what "Mrs" is short for, that’s for sure. I believe "Miss" is simply a contraction of either one or both. It’s not really that weird as our current definition of mistress is the newer one, it originally simply meant a woman who was married/at the head of a household. The newer connotation probably came about as people forgot that Mrs was short for Mistress, or maybe as a bit of irony.

My particular head canon regarding Arthur asking Harry about "Muggle stuff" is that it is less about a lack of knowledge or library research, but more an opportunity for him to learn how a young person, who was raised as a muggle, thinks and understands these things and their first hand perspectives with them. There is a difference between book knowledge and wisdom of experiences.

Also, if he knows TOO much, that make look strange to a muggle. So asking Harry would put him on the same level as the average person. The average muggle kid only knows how to plug things in. Maybe an adult knows about alternating vs direct current. Maybe a pair of dentists would know about current, amps, volts, circuits, ect (considering they had to learn physics).

Ooh I like that. Less of a "what is the exact definition of this" and more "what is your understanding of this". Even if he researches power plugs in a book, he might not grasp the extent to which they're used or any nuance that Harry might just unthinkingly reveal, not even realising it was something Arthur hadn't already understood.

I feel that the Durdsleys don't want Harry to leave, because they are bullies. A bully often obsesses over there target. They judge their own self worth by how they lord over the target, without the target they have nothing to feel superior too.
@NyxBluebell
@NyxBluebell 5 ай бұрын
Definitely, they need someone to bully/control/abuse. Bullies and abusers don’t let go of their target easily… Otherwise getting out of an abusive environment wouldn’t be so hard. The Dursleys hate Harry but they love the feeling of power he gives them… As for choosing between making Harry’s happiness over his own, I believe Vernon gets a real kick out of Harry’s misery. It’s not so much about Harry’s happiness as it is about Vernon’s way of being happy: either by making Harry miserable or getting rid of him for awhile

As someone who just makes basic electrical stuff work, it really is as easy as you think when you plug something in. Current conducts through tongs you inserted into electrical field in the wall (outlet) and if it has the bottom plug it’s just a ground and that does something to make stuff not burn down
@MrEvanNoyes
@MrEvanNoyes 5 ай бұрын
I replied this to two electricians hoping maybe you can help me understand the ground tong lol
@neozakk_
@neozakk_ 5 ай бұрын
@@MrEvanNoyesI just saw your comment lol. It’s a bit of a long-winded explanation, but here goes nothing (disclaimer, I finished my trade school 4-5 years ago so all of this might be slightly wrong, other Sparkies please correct any misinfo). The ground in an electrical circuit serves two purposes. The first is to provide a reference point for the electrical circuit. Meaning, without knowing what A (the ground) is, we cannot control B, C, D, E, etc. (these other variables being - voltage in different parts of a building, different voltage systems, etc. By identifying/establishing the ground in a circuit, we have a controlled means of distributing, using, and testing voltages. The second and more important purpose for the average Joe is to provide the quickest path of LEAST resistance to discharge an electrical circuit. When we install an electrical system, we design a system to “ground” the circuit. In a very literal sense, we drive 8-10’ copper coated rods into the earth that are tied into EVERY ground wire in the system. This system must be in place everywhere past the service entrance (where the main power comes in). In the event a circuit pulls more power (ampacity) than the breaker is rated for, when that breaker trips, that energy needs to be released somewhere. Instead of it returning to the circuit and potentially causing more damage, it uses the ground wire which has the quickest flow of current in the system to release that energy. The same principle applies to GFCIs (the plugs with the red reset buttons). These are designed specifically to monitor the current across the outlet. If it deviates from a “safe” value, the outlet trips and sends that energy to ground. Hope that was enough nerding for you. END DISCLAIMER: Don’t do your own electrical work. And no, that’s not me trying to work on your home. It’s just not worth it lmao. Electrical is the only “system” that doesn’t smell, make noise, or tell you before it will kill you and it can happen in a split second. If you must do electrical work in your home, TURN OFF THE MAIN BREAKER. Your fridge will be fine and you might even thank me for turning off your electronics for an hour.

I think the reason why Mr Weasley doesn’t go to a muggle library or attempt to ask other muggles about things like plugs or the function of a rubber duck, if because he (and very likely all magical folk) believe that it is knowledge that muffle either learn at a very young age, or else is intuitive knowledge that muggles just have. This would mean to go to a library and ask for a book on plugs or go up to a muggle in the street, would, to him, be the same as telling them that he is a wizard. This would explain why he asks Harry such questions as he believes that Harry should already know this, this would also be the case for Hermione’s parents. Whether this is a view held by the ministry as a whole (and therefore there is a policy against direct interaction with muggles to get such information) or this is just what Arthur thinks (and the ministry/previous people in Arthur’s job simply didn’t think it worth while knowing any of these things) doesn’t really matter, as Arthur is probably the only Wizard in the books with such an infatuation with muggles and muggle artefacts. That’s my head canon/explanation for it anyway, would be interested to hear others thoughts on the matter.
@stuartl7761

Brilliant take. That makes so much sense. It's hard enough to ask a what might be a stupid question, but then it's also literally the law that you don't make too much of a fool of yourself. I also feel like you can't expect Arthur to know everything. muggles have made an awful lot of bits and bobs. Every week I'm sure he thinks or something small that would be fun to figure out but not worth the time of spending a day reading through a textbook, it is more of a hobby after all.

Around the 36:19 minute mark is tangentially related to a cool history fact I happen to know, in Ancient Sparta (and I'm sure many other places throughout history this is just the one I happened to know) they used to intentionally train young warriors with spears and shields WAYY heavier than the ones they'd use in combat. That way they could build the strength to not just wield the weapon, but wield the real one with comparative ease. It being heavier meant they had to think so much more about the effectiveness of their technique and really perfect it. Then when they started training with the real thing or fighting with the real thing, it would be far more mobile and light, but they'd have the skill and technique and strength built up from training with heavier weapons and would be that much more deadly with them, it acted as strength building experience as well as a way to hone their fighting techniques under far more strenuous conditions than they would be in during the real thing. Much like Gokus weighted Garments.

People get hung up on Lockhart being totally useless, and yes, he's not at all effective at teaching his supposed deeds to the students. But if it is true that all of the stuff in the books did happen, just to different people (which we must assume it is, or surely someone would have disproven it's possibility by now) it would still be valuable from a DADA perspective to read his books, and assuming he's a decent author at least, it might not be the worst way of learning these things. More exciting than reading some pure fact text about it. That being said I don't see why the Weasleys need to get 5 copies of each. Surely there is some copyright spell on them so that you can't just make illegal copies, but even so, only one class at a time is having DADA, and at most 2 Weasley kids are attending that class, which means they should get by on just having 2 sets of each book. Sure it might mean you have to plan your homework more carefully so you do your DADA when it's your turn with the book, but if you are truly pressed for money, and the books are truly that expensive, you'd make it work.

For Lockhart's books, I think they're more like novels, not a textbook. So like for one of my college lit classes, I had to get 7 books, all for around $5-10. Books like "The Scarlet Letter", "The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglas", and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow & other stories". We just went through each, taking 1-2 weeks. I can see Lockhart assigning books that talk about his "adventures" and then they talk about what they read for homework.

I've often thought that Petunia and Vernon set out to do what they could to "un-magic" Harry. Like if they could squeeze him in a box of normalcy he wouldn't end up being magical at all. I think perhaps it started from a "good" place. I'm not sure Vernon understands much about magic at all, but Petunia has some understanding of it and I think it all always seemed very dangerous and evil and sketchy and terrifying to her (if you think about her experiences it's not that surprising, Snape used it to chase her away, what she overhears of dementors and Azkaban is terrifying, her sister getting farther and farther away from her, and it was a time when Voldemort was gaining power, until he finally killed Lilly...) I think she may have genuinely started out wanting to do right by her sister's son at first and keep him away from the stuff that killed his parents. But then weird things happened to Harry anyway and if anything the more they restricted him the more it exploded out of him (like his hair growing messily back in a night) and at some point she lost track of the goal and he became a scapegoat for all thing weird and going wrong. I'm not saying she was ever good or caring to him, but in her own messed up way I think she did start out wanting to do what she thought was best for him. Her attitude reminds me a bit of strongly religious Catholics who can't tolerate people with other beliefs because those people will go to hell for believing the wrong thing, and if they as Catholics don't try to convert the misguided people and stop them from going to hell, then they'll go to hell as well. For them the end justifies the means, it doesn't matter how much hurt they inflict because if they prevent someone from going to the greater hurt that is hell then everything they did no matter how awful was for the greater good.

The fastest butterflies in the world are the are the skippers which can fly at 37 miles per hour but on the average most butterflies fly about 5 to 12 miles per hour. Bonus fact european swallow is 20 miles and hour and african swallow is about 24 miles and hour, however it would take an eagle to carry the coconut, good thing for migration.

I just wanted to tell you guys that I very much appreciate the content you both make. These chapter by chapter break downs have really helped me stay grounded during these unsure and difficult times. It also helps me get out of my own head and do something constructive like re reading the HP series and then getting to put my own comments and opinions on a video breaking down each chapter. I've really struggled with some serious health issues and it seems getting out of my own head has gotten harder and harder as the country I grew up loving and still do, becomes unrecognizable. Which is another reason this channel has really helped me, you guys keep politics out of the entertainment you provide. Which has really separated the wheat from the chaff as far as KZfaq content goes. Plus, the genuine good nature of both brothers is a total breath of fresh air. Keep up the hard work gents

I never saw Percy as the red herring, simply because I was 3 when the book was released, so I saw the film first, lol. However, I do like the idea of having him as the red herring, simply because of the shady stuff he does later on in the series (Imperiused or not!) Here's a possible "What If...?" for you guys. What if Lucius HAD given the diary to Harry and the Diary possessed him the same way it had Ginny? Love this channel, I've been watching the Super Carlin Brothers since the beginning and I love all of the Harry Potter content that you guys do! Keep up the good work!

I think coming from the Muggle world and using Floo Powder for the first time must be kinda like my experience coming from Stockholm, Sweden, where our busses have screens showing the next stop and sometimes the several next stops in advance, to Sydney Australia, where busses looks and works much the same, but has no way of telling what the next stop is, no screams, no PA system (at least not on the busses I went on), no nothing. Like, I know where I'm going, that's not the problem, but I'm not a local, so I don't recognize anything, and there is an awful lot of stops to get mixed up and get uff early or miss the stop and have to get off late.

39:30 - The thing with divination in HP is like art classes. If the teacher is ok, you'll learn about perspective, color theory, using the right tools etc. And you'll get fine effects and good grades. You won't get an exhibition in MOMA, but you can draw or paint fine. That would be the Percy-level. You get the right tools and right instructions to use them in divination. And the predictions are fine - something more or less unimportant or vague. And then there's the Art level. Where you really get it, crack the art code, think about it in new ways. You're the van Gough of divination - seeing what others don't, using the same boring tools but in ways others don't quite understand but sooner or later admire. And you're making the prediction of a century about the Dark Lord and his downfall. Trelavney was like many art teachers - came there for the Art, stayed for the money and roof over their head. Had a glimpse of genius in her youth and than went back to the mundane tools and arts as described in books. Even worse - the inspired rhetoric stayed but sounds nowe fake when used on the boring old art-techniques from books.

I feel so seen - I managed an aquarium store and we were very much performing DIY maintenance. I made the mistake of mentioning that I was on light crew in college theatre, which meant I got to "fix" all the aquarium lights when issues arose. That’s how I learned that saltwater makes electricity extra spicy! We also had frogspawn corals, but I was head of the freshwater department so I didn’t interact with them as much as I’d have liked. That was hands-down the best job I ever had. I miss it so, so much.

I’ve always interpreted it as the Dursleys hate Harry so much, their hatred of idea of Harry being happy overrules their hatred of Harry overall. Like when he’s at Privet Drive, yes he’s there but they can actively make him miserable, when he’s a Hogwarts he’s happy, learning magic, he’s becoming more confident so he could eventually learn how to use his magic to make his life easier and they can do nothing about it.

Regarding the Dursleys: for me, it's a twisted sense of "caring" for Harry. They're trying to stamp out his uniqueness and magic because they genuinely think that's what is best for Harry, to make him normal. They really think that the abuse and neglect, the opposite of how Lily was raised, will "cure" Harry.

One of my favorite head-canon things is that Arthur was under the imperius curse for a bit during the wizarding war and was witness to Lucius being awful. This from Barty Jr as Madeye telling Ron that his father would have known all about that. Is it real? No, but it would have potentially increased his devotion to muggles if he had wronged some unwillingly

14:00 The plastic cover allows you to slide the metal prongs into the outlet so that they touch the metal contacts and that is the only point where your power lines are actually exposed and the wire just runs to your breaker box where all of your wires connect to the power grid. There are a few bizarre devices that connect to other devices as if they were the outlet (the only thing I have like this is my car battery charger) which inspires some people to search out or create extension cords that have the metal prongs on both ends. Some hardware stores have pictures of these with a warning that says "We won't make this for you and it should not exist" because if you plug that in you've got a live power connection you can just touch

Since the Quill of Acceptance and the Book of Admittance record names of magical children in order to send the letters from Hogwarts to new students, I wonder if the book will also automatically "update" the addresses when a current or future student moves? Because if someone's name gets recorded when they are a baby, a lot of addresses could wind up being very out of date by the time they turn 11

Hey Brothers! (And crew!) I’ve been a fan of you guys for a while now. My Dad and I found your channel during the pandemic and have been enjoying it ever since. We really like your Harry Potter, Disney, Pixar, Mavel and Star Wars content, and always try to watch the new videos together. I’ve really been enjoying Through the Griffin Door series since it has been so long since I’ve read the books. Like your dad did, my mom read most of them too me as they came out and Deathly Hallows was the longest book I had ever read on my own up to that point, so I’ve really loving getting to hear parts of the stories I haven’t for so long. Since I really love your guy’s idea of Hogwarts being a dragon that the founders transfigured into the castle, I wanted to add something to it. The dragon asked to be turned into the castle because it was old and lonely and this way it would never be lonely again and could live on in a different way. I also had an idea about the friendships between the founders based off of your idea of all of them knowing about and liking the Basilisk. What if Godric, Rowena and Helga were the ones who got the Basilisk for Salizar as a surprise gift, and it liked all of them for giving it a home and friends. One top of that, I had the idea that each founder had a gift that was a fantastic creature of some kind from the other three as a group gift. Godric would have gotten a lion of some kind, not a Griffin. Maybe a descendant of the Nemean Lion from Greek myth. You can’t tell me that Godric wouldn’t have a field day getting to spare with a lion that he would have a hard time hurting. Rowena would have gotten an eagle of some kind, or a raven. Maybe one that was similar to the Eagle of Zeus who was sent to torture Prometheus. Having the descendant of the eagle used to punish the bringer of knowledge to mankind as the familiar of the founder of the house associated with knowledge just seems to fit. And last, but not least, for Helga they would have gotten a badger of some kind. I don’t really have a suggestion for this one since there aren’t a lot of badgers in mythology. But I’m sure the other three would have worked very hard to find her a familiar that would fit her. Then again, maybe they just got the giant squid that still lives in the lake to this day. I just really like the idea of them all working really hard to find each other a familiar and having each of them care for them. Also, the idea of Godric having to distract Salizar while Rowena and Helga go and get the Basilisk is just hilarious to me for some reason. From Animanda Tsuki no Usagi, a fellow KZfaqr.

From a quick google: The fastest you're likely to be going in a speedboat is 30mph, with 20 being more typical (50 if you're really opening up in a fast boat). Some butterflies can fly 37mph, though around 12mph is more typical. I would surmise that the noise and impact of the waves creates a kind of illusion of speed, the same way staring straight out of a car at the trees makes it seem like you're going a lot faster.
