The Rishi said: When the evil but strongest Mahishasura and his army were destroyed by the Devi, Indra and the devas praised her, humbly bowing and filled with joy. They acknowledged her as the one who is worthy of worship by all and the savior of the world, possessing the power of the devas. They prayed for her blessings and protection.
They revered Chandika, whose greatness and power are beyond description by Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva. They sought her presence to safeguard the world and eradicate fear.
They paid homage to the Devi, who brings good fortune to the virtuous and misfortune to the wicked, intelligence to the learned, faith to the righteous, and modesty to the noble. They pleaded to her for the protection of the universe.
They recognized that those whom the Devi is pleased with are esteemed in society, blessed with wealth, glory, and righteousness, and possess devoted children, wives and servants.
By the Devi's grace, individuals perform righteous deeds and attain heaven. Shi is the bestower of rewards in all three worlds.
They acknowledged the Devi as the remover of fear in difficult times and as the provider of piety to those in happiness. They praised her for her compassionate heart and willingness to help everyone, dispelling poverty, pain, and fear.
The devas praised the Devi, offering celestial flowers, perfumes, and incense with devotion. Serenely, she addressed the devas.
The Devi said: "Ask of me whatever you desire. I am immensely gratified with your hymns, and I shall grant your requests with great pleasure."
The devas responded: "With Mahishasura's defeat, our purpose is fulfilled. Grant us protection from future calamities whenever we think of you. O Mother, may those who praise you with these hymns receive your grace, wealth, prosperity, life, and a good spouse."
The Rishi continued: The Devi, pleased by the devas' propitiation, agreed and disappeared from their sight. Thus, I have narrated how she emerged from the devas' bodies for the well-being of the three worlds.
Furthermore, I shall now narrate how she appeared as Gauri, symbolizing the devas' strength, to destroy wicked asuras, including Shumbha and Nishumbha, and to protect the worlds. Listen as I recount this story.
This concludes the fourth chapter, titled "The Devi Stuti," of the Devi-Mahatmya in the Markandeya-Purana during the reign of Savarni, the Manu.
मुनि ने कहा: जब देवी ने महिषासुर और उसकी सेना को नष्ट कर दिया, तब इन्द्रादि देवताओं ने विनम्रता से झुकते हुए और आनंद से पूर्ण होते हुए उनकी प्रशंसा की,। उन्होंने देवी को सभी देवताओं और ऋषियों द्वारा पूज्य माना और देवताओं की शक्ति रखनेवाली जगत की रक्षक के रूप में स्वीकार किया। उन्होंने उनकी कृपा और सुरक्षा की प्रार्थना की।
उन्होंने चंडिका की स्तुति की, जिनकी महिमा का वर्णन साक्षात् ब्रम्हा विष्णु और महेश भी नहीं कर सकते। उन्होंने देवी के अस्तित्व को दुनिया की सुरक्षा और सभी के भय को नष्ट होने के लिए आवश्यक जाना।
उन्होंने देवी की पूजा की, जो धर्मात्माओं को भाग्यशाली बनाती है, दुष्टों को दुर्भाग्य देती है, ज्ञानियों को बुद्धि, धार्मिकों को आस्था को और महात्माओं को मर्यादा प्रदान करती है। उन्होंने ब्रह्मांड की सुरक्षा के लिए प्रार्थना की।
उन्होंने यह जाना कि देवी जिसपर प्रसन्न होती है, वे समाज में सम्मान प्राप्त करते हैं, उन्हें धन, वैभव और धर्म की प्राप्ति होती है, और उनके पास निष्ठावान संतान, पत्नी और सेवक होते हैं।
देवी की कृपा से व्यक्ति नित्य धार्मिक कर्म करता है और स्वर्ग को प्राप्त करता है। वे उन्हें तीनों लोकों में पुरस्कार देने देती है।
कठिन परिस्थितियों में अभयदान देनेवाली और सुखद समयों में धर्म प्रदान करनेवाली देवी नित्य दयालु रहती है और भक्तों को सदैव गरीबी, दुख और भय से बचाती है।
देवताओं ने देवी की प्रशंसा की, दिव्य फूल, इत्र और धूप आदि समर्पित किए ।
सौम्य होकर शांतिपूर्वक देवी ने कहा: "आपकी स्तुति से मैं अत्यधिक प्रसन्न हूँ, आपकी जो भी इच्छा हो, मांग लीजिए।"
देवताओं ने कहा: "महिषासुर की हार के साथ, हमारा उद्देश्य पूरा हो गया है। इसी प्रकार, भविष्य में जब भी हम आपका स्मरण करें, तब आप हमारी रक्षा कीजिए। हे माता, जो इन स्तुतियों के माध्यम से आपकी प्रशंसा करेगा, आप उसपर भी कृपा करें, उसे धन, समृद्धि, आयु और अच्छी पत्नी से आशीर्वादित करें।"
देवी तथास्तु कहकर वहा से लुप्त हो गयी। उसके बाद देवताओं की मदद करने के लिए देवी ने गौरी के रूप में शुम्भ निशुम्भ का वध करने के लिए फिर जन्म लिया।
यहाँ दुर्गा सप्तशती का चौथा अध्याय समाप्त हुआ ।
