I don't think Armando Dippet thought Hagrid committed murder; I think he just thought Myrtle's death was a tragic accident that resulted from Hagrid's irresponsible choice to keep an acromantula in the castle. By the way, love the cozy set y'all created for this series!

Myrtle wasn't asked initially because she didn't haunt the toilet immediately. She went and haunted another student who used to annoy her. She came back to the toilet when that girl couldn't bear it anymore and went to the Ministry for help. So when she came back it was several years later, Hagrid was already expelled, the attacks had stopped and nobody cared anymore.

I was explaining this same feeling to my friend after the first three chapters. They were talking about the insanity of Hagrid being absent from Harry's life for 9 and 3/4 years TO THE SECOND, and how that was an insane coincidence because we have confirmation it wasn't intentional. And I just flashed back to all the cool things that I've realized about my own stories, that were originally accidental and then later built upon after I noticed. And the thought of these goofballs or anyone else deep-diving through them and admiring the same coincidences I did all those years ago just fills me with a jittery excitement. GOD I wish I were a faster writer.

I think that the Harry Potter Movies are some of the most perfectly cast movies in any franchise ever and one of those perfect castings is the late Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid. He just brought so much warmth and heart to Hagrid and like I literally cannot imagine anyone else playing him. I was watching Chamber Of Secrets the other week and like the scene at the end when Hagrid is back from Azkaban and Harry says "It's not Hogwarts without you Hagrid" and then they all clap for him I am not gonna lie I was bawling. Like full crying mess waterfall on my face situation. Since Robbie Coltrane passed away that scene so much harder and I think it is because of how brilliant he was in the role. Like to me He IS Hagrid. That's who he was always meant to be so yeah I was a full 25 year old woman who lives independently and has her own job and stuff crying my eyes out over a movie that came out 20 years ago .

Moleskin is a tough heavy fabric made from densely woven cotton, initially looped, then sheared which creates a short soft pile on the upper side. It looks and feels a bit like some sorts of velvet, but is actually far tougher and pre-dates denim for use in workwear. Not made from moles 🙈🤣

I had always just believed it was Dumbledore messing with the Dursley’s with the absolute madness of the letters, but to think it may be Minerva McGonagall is actually kind of endearing to think about. Like we know that she didn’t agree with sending Harry to live with the Dursley’s, and as strict as she was throughout the books, her courage always kind of shown through until I’d argue in Order of the Phoenix where she swore an oath to Harry to make sure he became an Auror. It could’ve just been her trying to get one over on Umbridge, but I think it goes a bit deeper than that. I think that’s the moment when Harry really discovers that she has a soft spot for him and a heart of gold and I think it’s why Harry defended her dignity the way she did against one of the Carrows in Deathly Hallows. To think McGonagall was the one pestering the Dursley’s, getting them back for how horribly they treated Harry was probably the beginning of an underrated character relationship in the books. I think she wanted Harry to know, in a way, that the Dursleys were powerless against magic. Something a decade of abuse and neglect can kind of be hard to rationalize. But then again, even if that’s all just in my head, it’s funny to think Minerva was just fed up with Vernon and Petunia and wanted to troll them. Petty McGonagall is fun McGonagall

@toonman5099
@toonman5099 10 ай бұрын
I love the idea that it was McGonagall as the one that sends the absurd amount of letters to passive aggressively torture the Dursley's. As far as the car crash thing, I took it to mean as like, considering the later aspects where we find out that the Wizarding World just simply don't use Muggle items because they think it's a "lesser" means to perform what they do, there would really be no reason for Lily and James to use a car instead of any other magical method. Granted the idea that magic being sort of a "safety net" would make sense, but then later on in Chamber, Harry gets his arm broken. Granted I don't remember at the moment if it was from the fall or via the Bludger hitting it. As far as Hagrid not being able to spell "Voldemort", part of me wonders if it was him making an excuse to not write it down because he's just THAT afraid of the name so as to maybe subtly try and build up the amount of weight and fear wizards and witches have of him.

Since they’ve touched on Hagrid being suspected to be a murderer here. The Ministry is very leaning towards Pureblood Supremacy, especially when Hagrid is expelled - before Voldemort takes the radical and violent route to Pureblood Supremacy. Hagrid being honestly suspected to be the murderer implies not only that the Ministry of Magic thought Slytherin’s Monster was a spider, but also that the Pureblood Supremacist Ministry genuinely thought it was possible Hagrid is the Heir of Slytherin
@Baalslegion07
@Baalslegion07 10 ай бұрын
Exactly. They obly needed a scapegoat and thus expelled the half blood kid obsessed with animals. Its like a school expelling an afghani child who happens to own a pet mouse, because an outbreak of some plague happned. Clearly it isn't really logical how a terrarium bound pet mouse could infect anyone, but due to rising tensions and general tacism, he is a good victim to blame stuff like that on. I highly doubt the ministry even cared about the ordeal. I mean, if ghosts exist and you cant get the murder victim to at least tell you anything, then either your investigators are bad or you aren't trieing. We talk about a girl, so emotionally unstable, that she literally turns away from the afterlife, because a boy was mean to her. A stalker-ghost gauking at people bathing. I'm pretty sure if the investigator just told a boy to go for a swim and ask her about stuff, she might have given answers. The ministry got distress calls, because a child died and they were forced to act. They heard about a weird looking half giant (giants are considered dangerous) who owns a deadly spider, expelled him and called it a day. I highly doubt they cared enough about this issue to actually think about if it makes sense. As if Salazar Slytherins mi ster would ever be a giant spider... like, come o mates.

Ooh 😯 they should do that for the other books. Chamber should be Slytherin cause that’s when Harry goes there and deathly hallows should be Ravenclaw cause that’s when Harry goes there and then maybe Hufflepuff for like the fourth one cause Cedric Diggory is a big character in that book, and then they can do Gryffindor for the rest I guess.

My favorite line in the chapter is when Hagrid says something about "What do you mean he [Harry] knows nothing?!" And then Harry goes like, "Wait, hang on, I DO know somethings. I'm not completely dumb, you know? I DID go to school for 10 years, you know? I DO know mathS [the British spelling, of course 😉) & stuff!" It's like, "Way to go, Harry! Way to stick up for yourself! Totally not what Hagrid meant, but still . . . You go, kid!" 😅 Also, I just assumed that Hagrid said that line about Dudley being a pig 🐷 was just Hagrid not wanting to admit that he doesn't know how to do human transfigurations; I mean, don't forget that Hagrid was expelled in his 3rd year (if I remember correctly?). That meant he STILL had a lot more "magic stuff" (😅) to learn at Hogwarts . . . 🤔

It’s so interesting to get this super in depth look at the story by you guys as a British person because I never realised just how many ‘British-isms’ in the story I completely took for granted all this time, like ‘squashy’ being a pretty common British adjective or the fact the vernon assumes he has to pay for hogwarts because it very much sounds like a private school (which is also how smeltings is coded as well. The smeltings sticks you discussed in a previous chapter are absolutely a thing in very old British private boys schools). Hagrid talking about the weather in his letter never came across as odd to me either because it’s kind of an expected part of polite conversation for older generations, idk it’s just super interesting!

Okay I’m super confused about how this prefect thing works. In the fifth book when Ron and Hermione get chosen as prefects, Harry admits that he had completely forgotten that prefects are chosen during the fifth year. This would suggest that each year two prefects from the fifth year are chosen. But we know that Percy and Ron and Hermione and Malfoy etc. continue to be prefects in the sixth year aswell. So does this mean that there are infact six prefects from each house, two fifth, sixth and seventh years every year? And if this is the case and a prefect is made head boy or girl in the final year, is one house short of one or maybe two prefects and are they replaced by new seventh years? How does this work, I need clarity!😂

*clears throat* AS a German Harry Potter Fan who has had the pleasure to enjoy Coldmirror's Harry Podcast: Hagrid's "moleskin" coat, is not actually moleskin, but most likely refers to a certain type of technique to rough up the material and make it more wind- and waterproof (or something like that) Seriously, I pity everyone who can't enjoy those 30 videos, it's some of the best Harry Potter Entertainment ever made

another great summary! I always love Hagrid's introduction in the books, both the first chapter and at the house on the rock! I also took part in the steps challenge, I really didn't think I could do it but I did with 3 days to spare! I didn't get the medal as getting it to the UK was quite expensive, but I got a piercing to celebrate it, it'll always remind me that I can do something if I want it enough! Thanks for setting it up and I hope we can all do it again! Oh and squashy is totally a common word here in the UK lol

Huge fan of SCB. So much so that my sister and I started answering our phone calls as heeey sister 😂 I can now defined relate with your experience as kids and having to wait an entire week for another chapter. This podcast is absolutely amazing! I have seen every HP video and I am surprised to find out more things I did not know before. Congrats on a great new project

The thing that has always bothered me about Neville is that his magic supposedly first showed when he was dropped out of a window and turned out to be able to bounce, then why did he break his wrist when he fell off the broom? Why not being able to bounce then too?

I immediately thought of magically large pockets like hermione's purse for hagrids cloak. A simple, very useful enchantment that makes more sense than hagrid just stuffing normal pockets to the brim with owls, mice, tea kettle, food, liquor bottle, cake, umbrella, and who knows what else

I have been listening through the audiobooks and i just finished book 5 and have started book 6 yesterday, I listened to book 4 about 2 weeks ago and I noticed the fact that he used to say voldemorts name without the T and then added the T in the beginning of book 5! It’s funny that you guys mentioned it because i had just noticed it myself. I had also assumed that he did this because of the release of the movies so it’s great to know i was right in my assumption. I absolutely love this podcast.

Love the Petunia analysis, Ben. And I have a theory about the parents. We have seem how Dumbledore treat muggle legal guardians when we see he meeting Tom Riddle... What he did? Manipulate the legal guardian. I think that, because timeturner poisoning, they can do that with muggleborns because, tell parents like: Magic exist, your child is magical and in few weeks You hace to let they go to a boarding school that no parents visit, and that is ok... No, the Evans were like: yaaaay, bye Lily, bye! No. That's... no. Maybe that happens with Hermione parents and is the intro to she not seeing them like never.

Question, hagrids wand was snapped because of his “murder charge” after being expelled. If this had happened to another wizard, no longer able to do magic because of the lack of a wand. Could that create an obscurus?

I think there is a tuition to pay for attending Hogwarts, when we go through Dumbledore's memory of meeting Tom/Voldemort for the first time I'm pretty sure he mentions something about they have a program or something for students who can't or struggle to afford the tuition for Hogwarts

Years ago, when I took hunter safety (I think 10 to be exact 😅), my instructors did mention burning chips to make a fire if needed. I think it's more than 10 seconds, but don't quote me on this because it's been years, and I haven't hunted in, probably 8 or so years. I just remember putting doritos in my hunting bag just in case of an emergency. I recall it was the Nacho cheese ones because I don't care to eat those, so I didn't mind wasting it on hunting.

I love the Snape as prefect and James becoming Head Boy theory. That one is great. It makes so much sense. It has to be canon. I have noticed before that Harry must have been exhibiting magic early. He also was riding a toy broom by 1 as we find out later.

Been loving this series sooo much. Can't wait for many many more. And the many years this will go on for. When they talk about "bag of chips" is that them being American and assuming they mean there chips or did they read crisps and translate it for themselves. Because if it was a bag of chips they usually have all the nice paper and stuff rapped around which I think could burn alright in a fire

HAGRID FLEW THERE! It’s not undisclosed! I guess the answer is actually in the next chapter but that makes hagrid equally powerful as Voldemort! Also, funny side note, I’m a firefighter in South Florida, and potato chip bags are actually very flammable. You are absolutely correct in saying they last of like 10 seconds, but they can start a fire if there’s other materials! 😂

McGonagall does have enough snark to address the letters like that. In OP, she tells Peeves the correct direction to unscrew a hall chandelier when everyone except Filch is trying to make Umbridge's life difficult. LOL.
