Chapter 9 of How to Properly Operate and Maintain Your Chain Saw:
You’ll encounter many different conditions on a jobsite. This video shows two methods of safely starting your STIHL chain saw in both cleared and cluttered conditions, then walks you through the start process.

I just want to say that this video is very well explained. My hubby usually does the yard maintenance but as of 2 yes ago he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Therefore he is “not allowed “ to operate his chainsaw but I NEED to and this video was extremely helpful!!! Thank you

That was useful. Didn't realise that was a 'burp' I thought it was just the CS failing to start in the cold position - so was moving to the warm position naturally - but I bet I have flooded it a few times!

Word of advice, buy your saw from a small local shop. I picked up a Husqvarna from Lowes that gave me all kinds of problems. Honestly it was probably user error more than anything. Someone recommended a small shop that also does repair nearby that I didn't even know existed. Went there, bought a Farm Boss. The guy did a service on it right then even though it was brand new, got it running, dialed it in. After I paid he had me come outside and walked through the start up process with me. Otherwise I'm sure I would have left that choke full on like an idiot. Such a vastly different and superior experience. Buy local!

Had trouble starting my MS 251C today. I thought that I was following Casey’s technique. I will try again tomorrow. Glad to know what to do if flood the carburetor - take the plug out and pull the cord.

I bought a Stihl from Ace Hardware. Though it may be reputed to be the best on the market, it's not at all user-friendly as far as starting it. I did everything as recommended in this video and put the oil and gas where they belong. I tried in cold start, then warm start. I did this twice a day for several days I couldn't get it to start. i took it to the hardware store where I bought it. Two different guys were unsuccessful. Finally a guy about 6'3" built like a bodybuilder was able to start it. You apparently need Herculean strength to pull hard enough to engage the motor.

Same deal here with MS271. Every time I need to start it it’s a project. I honestly don’t get it how it can’t be made to just start as you do with all the other pull rope engines 🤷‍♂️

Mine too. It's su h a pain to start. Thought it was just me so I took it back to ace and they. Couldnt get it started. Took it to a repair shop and it took the guy 20 minutes to get it started. Got it back home and it won't start. I absolutely hate this thing.

LMAO. This video explained why I always had to pull a few times, wait 20 seconds, then pull to start! I had never moved it too warm position previously. My prior 260 Professional always just started for 10 years and 10 years respectively. John Deere gave me $300 trade in for last one. The 362 cuts easier on big stuff though, at least for a 51 year old woman like me.

I have tried starting the saw I have by placing my foot in the bottom of the saw as demonstrated in this video, and pulled the rope the way you all demonstrated, but could not get it to attempt to crank. The technicians at the repair shop was drop starting it there to get it to crank, and it worked for them. This saw have been in the shop four times (MS-250) and I seem to have problems with the rope pulling out properly. I also have two Poulan's with one of them being new, and they now don't work either. The new one have problems which they are working to correct for me, and my old one which was working fine is starting either.

Any time I buy a new Stihl gas powered tool from my local Stihl dealer, they always take the time to walk me through the proper cold and warm starting procedures. It's the little things like that that help build and maintain customer loyalty.

Mine couldn’t get it started, the chain was way too lose, and he tried to start it with the cover on. And I had to wait three days to pick it up. What a waste of time. Now I have to figure out how to use it on my own. I guess I should have gone to a chainsaw shop instead of a hardware store.

At 3:45 when it starts you immediately give it throttle. This disengages the fast idle mechanism which is set whenever you select the cold start setting. If you are having trouble getting it to run from cold it is better to warm up with the fast idle engaged, so you need to stay off the throttle until it is running nicely. I think that’s why they include the mechanism on all the common carbs.

@@karlrovey I don’t use the brake routinely and I expect the chain to run for a short period while it warms up, then stop when I blip the throttle for the first time. The chain brake is really to stop the chain in an emergency, such as a bad kickback. At least that’s how mine works. It is designed so that the back of your left hand will automatically hit the brake as the kickback occurs. I don’t understand this obsession with putting the brake on all the time. If you have the engine tuned correctly the chain will be stationary at idle and moving when you start cutting. Never had a problem with it in 20 years of logging.

I just bought a new MS271 last week. My first couple pulls it felt stiff and choppy, but there's no compression release valve. I got it past that and pulled a few more times to try to get a burp and ended up flooding it. I'm going to try again today. If I still have an issue I'm taking it to the stihl mechanic where I bought it to see if he can help

April 3 /2019 Just bought a MS311 off the shelf at my Stihl dealer .The saw cuts really great , but is hard to get started . Even hard to start after you shut it off for a few minutes . Have to choke it like it was a cold engine . The saw also dies out slightly when you start to rev the engine . You have to goose it to get it to rev up but after that it slices through a tree easily and strong. It threw a fit on me last night and would not hit a note like it was flooded but it was not . I am happy with the saws cutting but unhappy with the way it starts .

Two things I would check. Make sure your chain isn't too tight. It should move easily when you pull it by hand. If it's too tight I've found that the engine is more likely to cut off when idling. I would also let the engine idle at high rpm for about a minute right after starting. Allowing a warm up period has helped mine run much more reliably.

Are you using non-ethanol 89 to 91 octane gas? Is your gas more than 6 months old without Stabil-Storage gas preservative in it? I can't find non-ethanol 89 octane gas for 3 counties here in Mississippi. These are large counties and this is a pine tree forest where much of the country's pine lumber is origined from, so you'd think different about the gas octane. Any how after checking every filling place for 3 counties I went to my country store one mile away. I mix their non-ethanol 89 and 93 octanes together making for a 91 octane. 93 octane's too hot according to my local Stihl dealer and friends I've talked about this. It' most likely damage the chainsaw. Good luck with it. PS- You might also try drying out or getting a new spark plug.

Hello, we would recommend double checking the starting procedure per the STIHL MS 311 product instruction manual. It's important to listen for the "burp" of the engine and then move to the half choke position. If the engine has a difficult time idling then it may need an idle/carb adjustment. I got a second hand Stihl MS290 and started it up just now using these instructions. A bunch of white smoke started pouring out. I tried to let it idle to warm up but it was a LOT of smoke and I was concerned. Anybody know what is wrong or what I should do? I refilled oil and fuel before starting...

Starting the Chainsaw: 1 Push CHAIN BRAKE FORWARD------------ (push the DECOMPRESSION VALVE IN)-------- 2 Push the Fuel Bulb 5 times----------- 3 Pull the Starter Cord till it "burps"--------- 4 Pull the starter rope again to START the saw, and pull the trigger to shift to IDLE----------- 5 Pull the CHAIN BRAKE back to operate.----- If the Stihl you use is new, remember the part about removing the engine cover, and pulling out the little orange tab which is half solid and half "opening" for the adjustment between Summer /Hot Weather operation and Winter / Cold Weather operation. "Open" half goes toward the center of the engine for Winter Operation, the "Solid" half goes toward the center of the engine for Summer Operation. The point being the open half allows warm air to the carb for Winter, and the solid half reduces warm air going to the carb in the summer, which can overheat the engine. When I was new, and tried to start my Stihl, I overlooked the part about pushing the Chain Brake to the OFF position to start the dang thing. I had to call the dealer's store to remind them that I was very stupid, and the store secretary guided me through the steps. (Yeah, I can really be this stupid.. If it can be fouled up, Ole Bruce will do it!) Like Dirty Harry says: "A man's got to know his limitations!"

Omg. Thank you. They didn't even discuss that in the video (the chain break). Freaking wondered what I was doing wrong. And yes naysayers, not everyone knows how to operate a chainsaw properly and some of us come on here to learn how to do it because mine was given to me without the instruction manual.

I have seen that after the burp you can put the switch on idle (instead of half choke) and start from there. It works and you avoid the chainsaw going full throttle. What would be the medium-long problem of doing this?

i've bought a new stihl and have done everything they say to start the thing, but every time it floods. Now it won't start at all, even after doing the carby. The thing is one huge head ache, i wish I went electric

You see the problem is that my MS460 is a 60cc saw and I would dislocate my shoulder trying to start it from the ground like shown in the video, most people drop start them because it's easier for them.

I just need to know where to put the gas into the chainsaw. I bought a PoulanPro PR3816 today. Please help. Do I just pour it in to the hole? There are silicone "pipes" all throughout the inside and I am confused.

1. Hit the primer button 3 times (and the decomp button if you have a pro saw) 2. Hold the trigger and move to the choke setting 3. Pull 3 times On the 3rd pull it will attempt to start, if you are quick you can flip the choke up one and it will start from there. If not you have to pull it a 4th time. I have used many different Stihl powered 2 stroke motors and this works without fail the exact same on all of them from concrete saws to weedeaters. If it doesn't you might be at 10,000+ ft or you need some maintenance.

I've owned a Husky 455 Rancher for 15 years and rarely had issues "drop" starting it. Just bought a MS 291 and have had a hell of a time getting this brand new chain saw to start. I watched the guy at the shop demonstrate this put the chainsaw on the ground technique and thought he was crazy. How many people have perfectly flat land on which to start your chainsaw? And then you have to kneel down and somehow get your foot through the handle hole? I have a size 13 foot and with my boot on, it barely fits! And only when the throttle is locked wide open. Personally, I'm really shocked at the design expectations of Stihl and am seriously thinking to return this thing. How would I start this on a hill? Side note, I live in the redwoods on a hill.

I bought this saw from a local Ace Hardware. I tried and tried to get it started. No luck. Got up this morning and tried and got it started. I'm letting it idle a tank of gas out and then going to let it cool and see if it starts then. I was about to give up. I need a saw that starts every time. I was going to buy a Husqvarna from Lowes, but after waiting 45 minutes for the guy to come back, I got angry and left. I had Stihl in the past and didn't have good luck with them. Everything else I own is Husqvarna from my 2 riders to my trimmer and love the heck out of them. I'm 64, I hope this is the last chainsaw I have to buy.

TheReal NateDogg, when the lever is in the warm start and you squeeze the throttle, it switches to the run position automatically. Anytime I go to switch off a Stihl chainsaw, the lever is always on the run position

They never seem to so a good job explaining the control lever, I know is an old comment but this may help. Cold start position = high idle locked, choke closed Warm start position = high idle locked, choke open " the throttle trigger must be depressed to move the lever to either start position. Run position = low idle, choke open. " depressing the throttle trigger, the lever will move to this position from the warm start position automatically " Stop position = if you don't know this one, sell the saw for God's sake. All saws with standard style carburetors will have these settings. Stihl incorporates them into 1 single lever. Most others brands use 2 or 3 separate switches and levers to perform the same actions..

Yeah, I think I already screwed my Stihl chainsaw because I didn't know we're supposed to let it warm up for around 1 minute after a cold start. And back when I was learning how to use it, I came to this video!!! And NO mention of this :( Now it's barely usable anymore... I get it that it probably has something to do with the de-compression valve, but the people who made this video should remember that many Stihl chainsaw models don't have that feature, they should have at least mentioned this and that models without the valve should run idle for some time before starting to use the throttle and getting to work. Don't forget that many of us are beginners and have no prior knowledge of these tools!!

Okay, somebody needed to use the word "blip" in a sentence around 3:50 there (I SAW you do it, and you said WHY you were doing it, but you didn't say WHAT you were doing), and you left out the part about 'always put the master switch into the cold start position THEN move it up to the warm start position, even if the saw is warm and you have no intention of doing a pull in the cold start position' (well, that's what the Manual says to do anyway). Yeah, my manual has blip in it too. I figured they got some professional Indian manual writer for it! I've read a lot of books in my 60+ years, earned a 3.95 GPA for my two years Drafting Design and Tech. Degree in 2012 and I've never seen the word blip used until I read that manual! Sounds like, "They had to bleep that word out for the TV audience?" Blip - lol🤪!

Yes and the part of the master control lever ALWAYS having to be set to closed aka cold xhoke while holding the throttle and trigger on BEFORE moving it to any other setting Good call! When I read your Comment I realized that was not covered. I think one could easily break that master control lever if not going to the full choke position FIRST before the other positions. I'm thinking that quite a few people here complaining about not getting their "blipping" saw running NEVER even read the manual and or broke the Master Control lever.

Ok Stihl. Why does my brand new MS461 fire prematurely and rip the starter handle out of my hand? Sounds like the start timing is too far advanced . how do I fix it?

Since you say the product is brand new we would recommend having a local STIHL dealer perform a proper evaluation to verify all ignition related parts are functioning correctly. HELP: Have a STIHL MS 291. Getting Severly Pissed Off. After starting as soon as I release the break the chain goes all out without my even touching the throttle. Seconds after I pull on the throttle it simmers down then turns off. Why the hell is this thing kicking into BALLS TO THE WALL after I release the break?

We would recommend that you discontinue use of this chain saw and bring it into your local STIHL dealer for a proper evaluation/service. With the engine at idle (not in the cold or warm start choke position) and set at the appropriate idle rpm the chain should not rotate. Please have your local STIHL dealer reach out to there STIHL tech team for any further guidance or questions.

New MS180 CBE in 10/08. been a good saw with one complaint - it's never been a 'three pull' saw. Have to pull many times when cold. Used it two days ago.... quit for a break & it wouldn't restart an hour later...... STILL not running. New plug, air filter, new 50:1 premix fuel. GRRR

Like most STIHL chain saws, typically 3-6 pulls is all it takes to get the product started. Before starting ensure the chain brake (the hand guard) is engaged in the forward position. Pull the starter handle no more than 3-4 times on full choke (cold start position) and listen for the burp (engine attempt to run). Any more than 3-4 pulls, and you might miss the "burping of the engine" and flood the engine with too much fuel. After 3-4 pulls on full choke, move the master control lever up one notch to the half choke position (warm start position) and pull the starter rope until the chain saw begins to run. Once running, quickly squeeze (blip) and release the trigger to allow the chain saw engine to return to the normal idle position (run position).

Stihl - when hearing the burp and moving the master control lever to warm position , at 3:41 mark what do you mean now you can now pull on the starter upper again? Is he moving it from warm start to run position ? Thought that would do it once the engine is running and we press on the trigger?

Thank you for reaching out! Like most STIHL chain saws, typically 3-6 pulls is all it takes to get the product started. Before starting ensure the chain brake (the hand guard) is engaged in the forward position. Pull the starter handle no more than 3-4 times on full choke (cold start position) and listen for the burp (engine attempt to run). Any more than 3-4 pulls, and you might miss the "burping of the engine" and flood the engine with too much fuel. After 3-4 pulls on full choke, move the master control lever up one notch to the half choke position (warm start position) and pull the starter rope until the chain saw begins to run. Once running, quickly squeeze (blip) and release the trigger to allow the chain saw engine to return to the normal idle position (run position).

@@stihlusa Thank you , on my Stihl 391 , once it starts from the warm start position, if i quickly squeeze the trigger and release it , it will shut off. If i depress the trigger few times and it goes to idle, then it won't shut off. Is that normal or do i need to get it looked at or adjusted?

Should be a maximum of 5-10 seconds. If you run it too long in fast idle you risk damaging your chain brake or clutch assembly.

The second method of holding it between your legs can be a real nut buster if the saw floods and it hydro locks - I disagree with using this method. Also, will Stihl EVER make a product that you don`t have to pull time and time again when it`s cold to start? I have several Stihl products and they ALL start hard when they are cold!

Between the legs for hot starts, on the ground for cold starts. Get an mtronic Stihl and it will start right up!

My professional, high power Stihl chainsaw ms261c does not have the warm start position on the controls, it has the off position, the full throttle run position, and the choke cold start position. So after running the saw and getting it warmed up, then shutting it off, then after a bit , trying to restart it, if it doesn’t kick on , you can’t choke it or it will flood, so what do you do, stick your boot into the handle far enough to hold the trigger enough to throttle up the fuel or wrap something around the trigger to give it some gas, or do the dangerous drop start method? Anyone got an idea?

The reason why we use the 'step over' method in professional forestry situations is because the chainsaw is heavier and is equipped with a larger guide bar. With drop starting, the bar can swing back into your legs. This happens because you have minimal contact with the saw, resulting in less control. The drop start is also inconvenient when working on slopes. Having the guide-bar out to the side, and supporting the saw using three points of contact is much safer. It also requires less space which is important when working among slash (discarded off-cuts and branches).

Of course the best way is on the ground, but that rarely is possible if one is out in the trees, with a lot of stuff lying about, as you pointed out. Drop starting is not to be encouraged. Peace! 👍

before I go on I have to say Stihl is probably one of the best chainsaws out there, having said that, ,,I've probably sold hundreds of these chainsaws and no one ever told me how to start one, so we couldn't show our costumers how to either. I own one myself and I can never remember how to fn start one, for crying out loud Stihl, put it online and save ALL your costumers the head ache. Which way does the fn break go? make the instructions easy to follow or people will start going somewhere else, including me.

Like so many others here, I have a terrible time cold starting my saw. Maybe I'm just missing the burp, but my experience of 20-30 pulls for a cold start is ridiculous. Then, it bogs down when giving it a little throttle until it has warmed up.

Just got a brand new MS250 yesterday,and the sales rep put fresh gas mixture and chain bar oil their tanks,he started the saw right up..I tried to start it when I got home with it,just tried to start it this morning and sos..got a brand new MS170 last year and same thing happened. I did exactly how this video shows,how the manual has it written ,and still nothing..I know about it probably flooded,so I have taken the spark plug out yesterday and this morning..wet plug...so I dried the plug and tried again..still nothing..I did try to see if I had spark at the spark plug electrode and don't see anything..but theres plastic all around where the plug goes into the cylinder head its hard to get the plug grounded to check for spark.. brand new chainsaw and can't get to to run. I guess I will try a new spark plug but I don't want to pull on the started rope all day..I need the saw running to cut wood now.

Hello Ross, Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. It is possible that the engine was flooded and typically removing the spark plug for a few hours will give the cylinder enough time to air out. Since the chain saw is new we would recommend bringing it into your local STIHL dealer for a proper evaluation, just to be on the safe side. Without an inline spark tester (such as the zat-4) it can be difficult to test for spark while just grounding the spark plug to cylinder heads. We always recommend using an inline spark tester to get the best and most effective reading. We hope you are able to get this taken care of and have a great chain saw for many years to come. @@stihlusa Hi I did get it started the next morning,Sunday..what I did was tried to start it normally,waiting for the first burp,which never happened,so I pulled spark plug out again,dried it,then pulled on rope to try to clear cylinder..I then put spark plug back in and wrapped the throttle with a zip tie wide open,then moved throttle to the wide open slot and pulled on rope..it started right up on first pull,so I removed zip tie and started it up in the part throttle position anf warmed it up,then slid throttle position to wide open and it idled perfectly. When new both my MS 170 and this new MS 250 were just alike,just had to get everything right and they both started right up. I am so glad I went ahead and tried the 250 again,instead of taking it 45 miles to the place I bought it from and letting the sales rep get it strated on the first or second pull !

1:54 when starting, the chainsaw should be in the locked position. So you push the safetybar away from you like at 1:54. When the engine starts you unlock it (pull it towards you) and rev it a gew times, then lock again, until you get to sawing

Bought a brand new MS251 last week at ACE. They filled it with gas and chain lube. Two young guys took turns trying to start it. After several attempts it fired up. I took it home. It was warmed up and started great. Used it that afternoon to clean up a 12 diameter branch that fell that morning. I knew I wouldn’t be using the saw again for a while and didn’t want to leave gas in it. I wanted to run the saw dry. So today. I went to start it. I about had a heart attack. Does it really need to be a “Pro” saw to have a primer bulb? Come on man! I wish I had been talked into buying the easy start. I’m 50 years old and in decent shape. I hope the next time I go to use this I don’t kill my self trying to start it. I wish I could trade it up for the Easy start model before I can’t. I might go to the store and ask. However. I doubt it. I do like the saw. Perfect weight power ratio for yard cleanup. I have some big trees here in My back yard.

Hello David, Pro saws do not come with primer bulbs either. We have utilized primerless carburetors for over 40 years with great success. Thanks for the reply. I started in full choke. However after 3-4 pulls. I never heard the motor “burb” like the carburetor got gas and tried to start. After about 20-30 pulls. I did hear it burb. I sat my ass down for about half a minute to catch my breath. Put it into half choke and after about 10 pulls. I got another couple signs of life (burps) Until finally in half choke mode and 20 pulls later it almost ran enough to get my hand on the throttle to keep it running. No white smoke. So I doubt it was flooded. Now. Once I got it running it performed flawlessly. I ran it out of gas my last use on purpose. I used Stihl Motomix. I’m worried it may not get used again for a while so I didn’t want to leave fuel In the tank or carburetor. Even though your gas made out of liquid gold says it should last 2 years. I just don’t trust it. Even then the little guy in my head thinks that maybe the little bit of gas left in the carburetor could go stale faster being empty vs full. 😝

I almost never can start my stihl, even when it was brand new, and it is only about a year old now. Never had this problem with any other saw. I’ve taken it to the shop twice now flooded. Considering tossing it in the dumpster. Several hundred dollar mistake buying this saw

A pro will never use "stihl" method just because stihl said so. Most of them know better their tools and dangers and adapt the methods to circumstances, infact i hardly remember when i last saw a pro doing that with a medium blade saw for that motor. Stihl recomends for dummies...but then dummies do not buy heavy , powerfull saws, with heavy blades...the risk that blade come.into dangerous position is minimal with light gear. The foot on the ground is in most cases impossible because working boots( which are 100% important in use) will nit fit properly into smaller chainsaws... Is much more dangerous when just the tip of the boot is securing the tool..when it slips and you are bend over it, pushing down and pulling up in the same time with your hands...you are f..ed... Between the legs? It works but often in cold starting of when the tool is not exactly responsive...again...twisting your torso ,pushing and pulling in the same time...is not the brightest idea. Drop starting is used by most pros( except when using really long blades and very powerfull saws) and is simple and efortless for normal users. Except kids, girls, old weak guys...is the easiest, fastest and most natural method. And these cathegories which can not control a dropstart should never use a chainsaw in the first place...never.
