The French defense against the German Blitzkrieg usually gets told one way. However there were pockets of resistance where the French fought tough successful battles against the German invaders. One of the stand out battles is that of the Char B1 bis called Eure. Alone, stood up to and destroyed an entire Panzer company in the village of Stonne.

@@jinglejangle3287 - France had 100 divisions in active service...but they were not placed right. Nobody thought the Maginot line was penetrable and nobody thought armored vehicles could transit the Ardennes. Plus, as mentioned, de Gaulle's recommendations for the use of tanks were ignored. If France and the British Expeditionary Force had attacked early on, Germany would have likely sued for peace in the west. At the beginning of WWII in Europe, the Luftwaffe would have struggled against the combined Air Forces of the British Empire and France.

Stonne was a bloody battle, and the Eure was not the only Char B1 getting fame: Another, led by Lt. Doumercq, got famous when the commander met an infantry column and ran over them, the tank tracks turning red and triggering panic and routing among the remaining german forces present that day. A panzer III also did a number on french tanks at some point, but I don't remember its name. As for the Eure, when it got back to base, the repair crew counted 140 shell impacts on the tank, none penetrating. Other Char B1 were not that lucky however, as at short distance the armor is insuffisiant to stop AP shells.

This is a direct quote from Hitler after 1,700 french forces defeated 30,000 strong German and Italian divisions in Libya: “You heard what Koch just said. Bir Hakeim is new evidence of the thesis I always defended: the French are, after us, the best soldiers in Europe. Even with its current birth rate, France will always be able to field a hundred divisions. After the war, we will absolutely have to build a coalition which may contain a country capable of military exploits such as Bir Hakeim wich stun the world”

Ridiculously bad. The Phony War was a huge missed opportunity that resulted in the entire WW2 we ended up having. The French could have advanced straight into Germany while they were busy in Poland. But they didn't. And they ignored Gaulle's warnings about the importance of tanks, thus losing to inferior Panzer 1's because of their sheer numbers and speed.

Great to hear about this. Reminiscent of Tiger Tank ace Michael Wittmann when he took out an entire British armored column in Villers-Bocage in 1944. The French get a lot of crap about dropping their guns and running away, but people have to know how brutally they suffered in WWI at Verdun, and other battles. In 1940, it wasn't the french soldier's fault they were being led by 80-year old generals who used WWI tactics like bayonet charges to fight a modern Blitzkrieg war that employed tanks. Most of their high ranking officers were miles behind the fast moving front, and took hours or days to make decisions, while most of the German generals like Rommel rode up front with his troops. When led by competent officers they French soldier could fight as good as anyone. The French held up Rommel's offensive in North Africa for several days with a stubborn defense at Bir Hakim. So its great to see this French tanker prove they could fight well and successfully when given the opportunity .

He got badly injured during the battle of France and went into captivity. He escaped and joined the USSR where he was held captive until Barbarossa when he became Free France's ambassador in Moscow. He joined the prestigious 2e DB and was among the first men to enter Paris in 1944. After the war he became minister in France and helped shaping the country in the worshipping of the resistance. He also was one of few to politically contest the use of torture in Algeria and was almost one of the only leftists in the government. He even was France's represent in NATO...

There is an other b1 bis famous for the battle of Stonne. The B1 bis called "Riquewihr" but mostly known as "the butcher of Stonne". It was nicknamed like that because when it arrived at the entrance Stonne, german soldiers were waiting for him in the ditch along the road. Since, it was impossible to shoot them, Lieutnant Doumercq decided to put the tracks in the ditch and ran over the soldiers. When it entered Stonne, the tracks were covered with blood and guts.

It's a shame how cruel history has been. At the beginning of the war the French had some of the best tanks in the world, and when the M4 Sherman first came out it was one of the best tanks in the world, but history says the French were weak and useless, and the Sherman was a death trap. Neither could be farther from the truth. The other thing that modern-day Americans have forgotten is that if it wasn't for the French, there wouldn't be a United States of America. You should really look into the hardships the French volunteered to take on in order to help us defeat the British. It's shameful how we have forgotten them as our original ally.

I would like to add a few details about Pierre Billotte's incredible career: Captain Pierre Billotte was wounded and taken prisoner on 12 June 1940. He escaped from the prison camp on 1 February 1941 and managed to reach the USSR (where he was interned because the USSR and Germany were not at war at the time). After 22 June 1941, Billotte became a Free French representative in Moscow. He was then appointed General de Gaulle's Chief of Staff and Secretary to the French National Defence Committee in London. In August 1944, Colonel Billotte landed in Normandy with General Leclerc's 2nd French armoured division and took part in the liberation of Paris (he convinced German General Dietrich von Choltitz to spare Paris). At the end of the war, Billotte was a general and commanded a French infantry division. He was one of France's representatives at the UN in 1946. After leaving the army, he became a member of parliament and then minister of Defence in the 1950s, and mayor in the 1960s and 1970s. In politics, he supported a rapprochement between the United States and Western Europe (Atlanticism) and was in favour of French Algeria, while denouncing t.orture during the Algerian War (1954-1962). Pierre Billotte died in 1992.

@joaogomes9405 it was low velocity but hadn't that much of a lower penetration (around 70mm for the 47mm and around 65mm for the 75mm) and for moving target I would argue that hiting a moving target is realy hard alltogether. And that at 50m the hull rotation speed was able to get a good enough Travers speed and since the guner of the 75mm was also the driver he could relatively effectively aim

Hello everyone. Never forget that it was the French who invented and created the first real tank and alone ancestor of all current tanks: The RENAULT FT17 put into service in 1917, with its mobile turret, its crossing possibilities and its engine technology, crew, cannon and tracks. On the ground the Renault FT17 is the real winner of WW1! The French produced thousands of them between 1916 and the end of WW1 in 1918, which they launched by the hundreds on the battlefields in front of their infantry to cut into pieces the German and Austrian lines. The German newspapers spoke of "The fear of the tanks" to explain the defeat of Germany. Moreover, the US army arriving in 1918 bought hundreds of Renault FT17 tanks and was inspired by them for its first real US tank. The so-called tanks before the Renault FT17, the French Saint-Chamond and Schneider, the English Mark? They were not real tanks but guns mounted on tracks and surrounded by metal plates. In 1940 The French simply had the best medium and heavy tanks in the world! It's just that they didn't have enough, France having prepared far too late for the new war against the fascist dictatorships, however inevitable given their aggressiveness (it reminds us of today's free Europe threatened again by the facists Russians and their megalomaniac mafioso dictator from another time) because of major internal social problems and strong pacifist fundamentalist lobbying... And especially the French staff was very badly inspired, leaving its tanks in small unit in support of the infantry, instead of grouping them like the Germans in large armored regiments in strategic link with the modern bombing planes of its Air Forcer (which France also lacked :p)... If, as in WW1, the French had prepared in time for WW2 and therefore the French and British allies had been able to contain the lightning attack of the Germans in June 1940, and therefore France remained a free country and fought like in WW1 until the end with all its means, I would have loved to see the French tanks in 1945! In my opinion the French tanks in 1945 would have been monsters largely at the level, and undoubtedly better, than the German Tigers and the best Soviet tanks...

When the other soldiers saw the blood covered tank they shat themselves and ran away!

I love hearing of the French in WWII and their will to fight, though its usually overshadowed by the ever comical "Hehe france flag is white like surrender flag". I hope to see a bit more about France and the fight they kept up for the years of the war
