The Evan Flamethrower scenes are GORGEOUS! Love the simple hints for adding particles and shadows - such quick ways to make the environment richer. Also, I really appreciated the tip for Command+click to disarm all the behaviors/settings to start recording. Seeing you tweak the nutcracker jaw settings AFTER recording made me realize I have way too many settings armed as my starting point for recording. Should only arm the settings I know for sure I want set in stone!

@Okay Samurai Hi Dave, It's me again. I am facing a problem with the lip sync process. I saw on the official Adobe Forum that someone have encountered the same thing in the past but his problem wasn't really solved (he found a way out that didn't works for me). I left a comment their asking what would be the solution but have not received any feedback yet. I thought that maybe I have to write here too. Briefly, when I make the lipsync using an audio file, everything works fine but the problem that the visemes dosent show up. Instead of getting all the detailed visemes I get a single block that I cannot modify. The problem is that the lip sync is not perfect and I want to modify it slightly by editing the visemes as you shown in your tutorial (I will probably use mic voice over for some sections and then edit some visemes manually for other sections). I tried different extensions for my audio file including mp3, wav and aif nut nothing worked out. I would like to point out that the guy who faced this problem in the past have succeeded to make it work using an "aif" extension but this dosent work for me neither. Any advise on that? Thanking you in advance :)

@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 6 жыл бұрын
If it's Photoshop art, you want to create your character as big as you'll need. So here, I drew most robots at least 2000 x 2000 so they would look okay in a 1080p closeup. Otherwise stick to smaller resolutions (720p, etc). If it's Illustrator art and "Render as Vector" is checked in the right properties then you can use Transform > Scale in CH and you won't lose any quality.

Great video. Really love that you are doing a production walk thru. Question: when you bring the puppets/scenes into AE is the audio for that puppet just the puppet audio or is it also the whole audio mix Down? I’m curious (and will rewatch because maybe you covered it and I missed) best practices for handling the audio. Do you bring the original mix down into AE as a reference for placement in timeline (where to place puppets in timeline)? Or do you only bring the background sound FX in as its own layer in AE and then each puppet is only its voice and then mess around with where the best timing location is for that puppet on the timeline? I’ve been importing an animatic of my storyboards into AE as a reference for where I am placing my puppets. I’m working with pre recorded audio (part of a documentary) but am curious how best to approach combining elements in AE when I get to work on an original, from the ground up, animation in CH.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 6 жыл бұрын
I typically bring the whole mixed voice/soundtrack audio as its own track in AE, but I do the sound fx in AE for better control over timing. Basically that whole audio mixdown is the pulse that runs through everything and keeps the timing right - the only time I change it is for that individual character lip sync generation.

That last part had got me shocked so well that I could use puppets rather than using recorded transparent .mkv into Adobe After Effects that requires Keying out the background that can lead to flaws and bugs. You made my day.

Physics is tricky, and I'm working on a new tutorial and demo project next month that will go into all of this in greater detail. For now - make sure anything you want to add physics to is an independent group, is set to a "free" attach style (this will happen automatically in the next version), and return to rest is set to 0s if you want draggable elements. Hope that solves your issues...

Good afternoon Dave, I wanted to ask you an opinion about buying a PC to work with both character animator and after effects. I have framed these two models: 1) MSI Nightblade MI3 7RB-016EU 2) HP OMEN 880-021NL In your opinion which of the two is more suitable to do 2d animation through the use of character animator and after effects? Thank you in advance.

I'm not as familiar with Windows as I am with Mac, but our minimum requirements page is a good reference: helpx.adobe.com/adobe-character-animator/system-requirements.html. The AE specs are more or less the same too.

Hi Dave, congratulations on your videos, I always follow you and I'm trying to learn how to use character animator. I would like you to explain how you can get complex behavior characters, such as a jumping. I tried to get the animation of a jump through the cycle levels triggered by a trigger and inserted in the level of the basic character. Unfortunately, however, the animation is not fluid and it is too fast. To get the jump animation I worked on illustrator of the different poses of the character but I think this mode is not suitable for obtaining an acceptable animation. You think it would be possible to use animated cc to create a cycle that is more fluid and credible (if so, it would be really great if you could show it in a video)? If you have time it would be nice to see a tutorial in which you focus on the possibility of inserting levels in the loop that reproduce the complex movements of a character (for example a jump, a somersault, a particular pose). Thank you so much for your extraordinary work. Congratulations for your new Evan Flamethrower project. Sorry if my English is not the best but I'm Italian: D
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 6 жыл бұрын
Your English is way better than my Italian! So yeah - some stuff still isn't easy to do yet in CH, and jumping or flips are included in that. Yes, I think your best bet at this point would be to do a cycle in another program and bring it in as a frame by frame thing. But we have some stuff we're working on that will make this easier in the future, and when that comes out I promise I'll show everyone how to do it!

is there a way to give a layer/group that's inside of the body group a fix position where it's not moving at all but the others should still move around? i've a charakter where he sits at a desk and you can see the lower body under the desk and arms and uper body over the desk so the desk has to be between them in the layer structure but when i move my head around, the desk also moves a bit even i've made it independent and fixed...
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 6 жыл бұрын
Note with Almasol, there is a stick running through the Body group on the top of the desk, and neither the body or desk are independent. This ensures the stick and everything below will stay static. In your situation I'd try that "stick tagged as fixed" thing through the desk and see if that does what you're looking for. You can also set the attach style to "Free" to make it not linked to anything else (it should be set to "Weld" by default).

Hi Okay Samurai, i'm currently making an animation for a work related project, i have one animation of my character waving, unfortunately it is a little too long of a clip, since it has to match other things in the video, is there a way to trim the take for example in the middle? like in Premiere where you can use the razor tool. I could record a new animation, but this one was really good, and i'm pretty new at this animation stuff, so it would take some time.

Hi, Dave! Love your video tutorials! I have a question regarding @ 29:50 #12. Creating & Editing Shots - Could you give me a brief explanation or direct me to a video as to how to do the closeup comps that you switch between in AE? Much thanks!!
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 5 жыл бұрын
Sure. All I did was make a new comp with the same timing as the wide shot, but just made everything bigger - the characters, the backgrounds, etc. Then I just switch between the 3 comps by splitting and cutting them up in the timeline - closeup of Evan, closeup of character, wide shot.

Question: How can I pin down a character's legs WITHOUT fix handles? The body swings when I move my head but I want to be able to walk on keyboard input without fix-pinning the feet to the ground. Thanks in advance for your answer and for the tutorials in general. And by the way: is it a bug that I often jump into the isolated layer view when I single-click on the layers in rig mode? That happens very often and is incredibly annoying. Regards, Denis.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 6 жыл бұрын
Currently you can't easily do it with the same view for walk - you would need to do a full body swapset. Basically walk needs to be unfixed to work properly, and standing still needs to be fixed to work properly, so the two can't mix together. This video might help: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oMdnlbmjmdGsc4k.htmlm47s. And second, yes, I don't think single click should ever bring you into isolated mode, that does seem like a bug. I'll check our backlog and see if we have anything about that, thanks for reporting.
@cleborainey
@cleborainey 5 жыл бұрын
Hello again. I was wondering if you always import a finished recording from Character Animator into AE or have you made a duplicate character and rigged in AE or ADobe Animator. I’ve been trying that route, and finding it very difficult to get original art work into either. If you know of any detailed video on these secrets would be much appreciated. So far only was I have found is to make a copy of character and then deconstruct everything to its own layer and then import into AE one layer at a time. Taking a while to say the least.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 5 жыл бұрын
Personally I always go the CH > AE route, with zero extra rigging in AE. If I need to adjust anything, I just go back to Character Animator and make the changes. For a better workflow, I would just pick one application for character creation - yeah, trying to recreate the character multiple times seems tedious. If CH feels like it's limiting you, I'd be interested to know what are the features you need that AE or AN have?
@cleborainey
@cleborainey 5 жыл бұрын
Okay Samurai I doubt is as much as limiting me as me just not fully comprehending it’s capabilities. Yet. But will work on some thoughts to respond further. I’m sure I will have some once I actually learn more.

I have some suggestions for the app. But first i want to say i love it and the work that you and your team are doing. It is fantastic to have a tool like this to bring to life characters and play with them. The suggestions are focused more for live shows, like twitch.tv gameplay streams, and for the frame by frame animation tool. So lets start: 1) Possibility to create loops for the frame by frame animation tool. For ejample: I want to create a loop animation which has a transition from the begining to the loop and from the loop to the end. Now it is not possible. Imageine i want my character to claps his hands, you can draw just one clap animation and then loop it a number of times with Character Animator application. But if you want to see the character to put his arms from down to the clap position, then clap the hands, and after several claps, put the arms down again. You can't do it in just one animation folder. This tool could help us to make things like this with less resources. Because now, if you want to do it, you must draw all the animation, even the loop with all the repetitions. But with this tool, you can draw just the begining and end transitions, and just one clap. Configure it, tell the app in which frame starts the loop and from which frame return to the loop, and all donne. Even it would be great if we could configure the loop with a number of repetition, so the app repeat it this humber of times and then it goes out from the loop to finishes with the end transition. Or add the option to open the loop (go out of it) ussing the triggered animation key. 2) An option where hide (or untrigger automatically) one animation folder when it arrives to its end. Now if you don't pause the last frame of one animation which was triggered before, you will see how that character part will disappear untill you untrigger the animation folder. It happens when you have for example two animations in the same main folder and you configure each animation's folder to hide the rest of animation`s folders when you trigger it. For example: Imagine a character which is playing a main dancing animation where he just move its harms. Then you trigger a second animation where the character puts up its arms. But you want to return to the first dancing animation just after the second animation finishes. Just with one click, triggering the second animation, and without need to untrigger it to return to the first animation. So the character will stop dancing, puts up its arms and down, and keep dancing after it. All with one click. 3) Make the frame by frame animation tool to check if the main folders are activated before to start the animation. First, lest introduce the situation. You have a main folder, for example the Smile mouth. Inside this folder you create other folders for diferent smile animations and each one with its own trigger key which hide the others. Then, you configure the main folder to be showed when you are smilling to the webcam. So the aplication will activate it and will show one of the animations which is activated with the trigger key. But there is a problem. Now it works fine with looping animations. But if you have an animation which start and stop in the last frame, for example, a transition from the normal mouth shape untill the smille shape. When you trigger this animation it will run even when the main folder is not activated. So, when you activate the main one, when you smille to the webcam, your character will show the last frame of the smile animation. You will miss all the previous drawings. So, these are some suggestions to improve the application. I think they will be very usefull for live shows. Greetings!

Thanks for the detailed feedback - I forwarded it to the entire CH team. I agree - cycle layers needs clearer visibility as to what will happen and additional options to let you do the things you're looking for. Much appreciated!

I don't use any voice morphing programs, but sometimes I do adjust the EQ of voices or slight pitch shifts to change them a little (usually in Adobe Audition).

Hi Dave I like you tutorials. I want to use this software but don't a poweful system. Can you suggest a perfect alternative? I will be thankful.
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 6 жыл бұрын
Most of the programs I use - Photoshop, Character Animator, After Effects - can work on lower end systems, but performance will be slow. I don't have much experience with other alternative applications. Search for "minimum requirements" for AE and CH online and you should see what a basic computer setup would require, and price systems based against that.

Hi dave, just wanted to ask, I am really struggling with body gestures... I was hoping to create smooth transitions between different body poses e,g hands on hip and crossing arm...Do you think it is better to draw these poses then trigger them instead of using the draggers?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 6 жыл бұрын
This is a personal preference - dragger works for some, triggered cycle layers work for others. For something like crossed arms I would definitely recommend triggered cycle layers. See Almasol on the OKS puppets page for an example of a character with triggered arms (he does a raise and point with one arm, but imagine doing it with both arms simultaneously). Watch the Advanced tips video on this channel and use the puppet warp tool in PS or AI like it says!

Personally I've used the Akai Professional MPK Mini MKII the most. Yes, the keys work with it as well - but I think you don't have to go too big. Personally I've found the MIDI knob inputs the most helpful - using those for slider or dial-based controls in the Controls panel in CH works really well.

Okay Samurai Not much of an illustrator but I’d really like to see more of the hand-drawn look. I work mostly with shapes and vectors in AI. How do you work in PS and not have the puppet pixelate in extreme close ups? I’ve tried upping the resolution but the file sizes are just too big.

I did a drawing tutorial a year ago - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y92BjaWLtrPKfKc.htmlm58s - but I can do another updated one soon. Maybe draw a robot from scratch or something like that. For sizing - I usually work at 72dpi with a square canvas of 2000 - 3000 pixels - that runs okay on my Mackbook Pro.

Is it possible to compute lip sync to my sad mouths set, for a portion of dialogue only?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 5 жыл бұрын
Lip sync works without caring about what mouth set you have, so compute lip sync just makes visemes that any type of mouth will use. So if you have a triggerable sad mouth, as long as that trigger is on, the sad mouths will show instead of the normal, but retain the same visemes.
@frenzyhouse5039
@frenzyhouse5039 5 жыл бұрын
@@okaysamurai Thank you, it worked! I noticed that with the sad mouth the "Ah" and the "Uh" visimes make the mouth disappear. Do you know why?
@okaysamurai
@okaysamurai 5 жыл бұрын
Usually this is a tagging issue (check that they're tagged correctly) or a visibility issue. For example, in many of our examples, Ah and Uh are in a cycle layers group. If you tagged the group but didn't have cycle layers, it would just show the (invisible) group. See Blank Face or Chloe from the Start workspace to see how to rig those multi-frame mouths.
