Wow, this was fun to watch. What a fun and well-researched tribute to such a classic! Charade is one of my favorite all-time films-probably because Cary Grant was my favorite all-time actor, Audrey Hepburn my favorite all-time actress, and Paris my favorite all-time city ❤️

No problem! I love Charade, it’s one of my favourite movies. It was a strange experience when I worked out the location. I used to work at a Lycée around the corner and decided to make a quick visit and when I stood in the middle of the room I thought “i recognise this place...” and then after a moment or two I had the realisation of where I had seen the church! It was funny how I stumbled across it after previously trying and failing to find the info online :)

Thanks Stanley for making this video. Last year, partly inspired by this video, I took my girlfriend and her mum to Europe, it had been a wish of hers to visit Montserrat near Barcelona, we also came to Paris and visited some of the Charade locations. Also got to see Notre Dame before the fire. Sadly, her mum passed away a few days ago, just wanted to say thanks.

+Jean-Michel René SOUCHE thanks so much! Yes, it was difficult trying to get to the bottom of that mystery. Maybe some of the cast or crew stayed in that hotel while filming in Paris and somehow that evolved over the years into "the hotel from Charade"??? I guess we may never know? Thanks for watching!!

We just returned from five days in Paris and, because Charade is our favourite movie, we went on the tour (it's also a fantastic way of finding other stuff and generally seeing a mind-boggling amount of incredible things). As of February 2023 very little has changed; the Marigny theatre is open, the corner of Jardin Champs Elysées by the Vrai Guignolet is receiving attention, and we still have Reggie's Apartment for next time. Thank you So Much for this excellent video - it was entertaining, informative and invaluable. (Heading for the Palais Royal I was reciting, 'Run like Audrey, run like Audrey...', before I had to admit that I can't run like Audrey anymore at my age. My wife replied that, at my age, I can't even run like Walter Matthau...). Thanks once again, you have spurred us on to a unique few days xx

Les Halles has changed so much. My great aunt came only twice to Europe. And I'm so grateful I grew up in Paris. She came in 1950 and 1980. And second time she fainted and exclaimed "what have they done to Les Halles?" Ans I understand her. It was horrible it's less horrible now. But still ugly :( I live in Paris and I did this 13 years ago I love you so much for doing this!! A trip I'll do in the next few days for sure. I found the two hotels and the café without any help from the internet just my eye lol and I was so proud of that! I am so grateful you took the time to do this. I was 17 I went to the hotel and asked "did they shot charade here" and the person was like "yes they shot a movie here but I wasn't here in the 60s" lol Next time you come to Paris we should meet up! Although you don't need a guide you're very good at it haha. PS. So sad to see Notre Dame intact. Now it's a mess breaks my heart

Thank you! That's so cool that you did your own Charade adventure 13 years ago. Ever since I saw the movie many many years ago, I always wanted to go the places where it was filmed. I still think that the Hotel St Jacques is connected somehow? Maybe the cast or crew stayed there during filming? Yes, Les Halles looks so different from the 60's. I'm glad some parts from the film are still there. It might be awhile until I get back to Paris, but I miss it so much! Yes, so sad to see what happened to Notre Dame. I really hope they can restore it completely. Thanks for watching and sharing your insights!

Astonishing retracing of the filming locations used in Charade! I am impressed with how thorough and successful you were at finding all of these places. It's also interesting how the canopy of the tree in front Notre Dame has almost the exact same shape now that it did when the film was made. How long did it take you to visit all of these locations in Paris? Again, excellent work! Thank you for putting this together.

Good job Stanley. Other youtubers and "official" movie location sites, always claim that the Charade's hotel St. Jacques was located at 28 Rue Censier, current site of Hotel Maxim. They are so wrong and you are so right. The red door at 24 was where the filming took place.....although I'm sure it wasn't red then. I'm still trying to figure out the spot where Cary jumps from one balcony to another. The Rue Censier balconies don't quite line up. Maybe that was a Hollywood sound stage. Anyway, excellent vid clip. I appreciate quality work.

Thanks so much! Some claim the balconies at 26 Rue de Berri, are the ones seen in the film. They may have been remodeled? I still need to compare them better with the film. Stanley: I have loved "Charade" since I saw it in a theater during its first run in 1963. I was ten years old but, even at that age, I knew it was something special. And I have talked it up ever since. I'm not sure you know this, but it is also a favorite of director Steven Spielberg. When he heard the original negative was in danger of deteriorating, he mounted a campaign to raise money to restore it. And I believe the restored version is the release on Blu-ray from The Criterion Collection. A few years ago, I was fortunate to interview actor George Kennedy at his home outside Boise, where I worked as a TV news anchor and reporter. Kennedy was 88 at the time and his health was declining. But he was energized by talking about his career. I wanted a souvenir of our meeting and brought along a Criterion copy of "Charade" for him to sign. When he saw it, he got very excited. He then told me "Charade" was his favorite movie of all that he made. He said Audrey Hepburn was a delight to work with and his "Charade" experience led to a lifelong friendship with Cary Grant. Thank you for providing a glimpse of how some of the original movie locations haven't changed much at all, especially the puppet theater. I visited Paris twice in 2019 and it didn't occur to me to seek out those places. Maybe next time. By the way, I wonder if you have seen the re-make with Mark Wahlberg and Thandie Newton? It's called "The Truth About Charlie" Of course, it's not nearly as good. Critics panned it, so no surprise it was a dud at the box office. But writer and director Jonathan Demme substituted the Paris Flea Market for the stamp market and you can easily visit that location because it is still very popular with merchants and tourists alike.
@StanleyFoss
@StanleyFoss 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! No I did not know that Steven Spielberg was a big fan and helped save the movie?? That is really cool to know. That is so awesome that you got to meet George Kennedy, and he signed your copy of Charade. That is so awesome. Not many who worked on the film are still alive sadly. I corresponded a bit with the actor who played Jean-Louis (the one who is now a doctor) and he sent a link to my video to Stanley Donen about six months before Donen died. I have no idea if Stanley Donen ever watched the video, but just knowing that Stanley Donen who directed Charade, Singing in the Rain, On the Town etc - might have watched my video, blows my mind! I did see The Truth About Charlie years ago when it first came out. I need to rewatch it for sure. I remember I didn’t like it nearly as much as Charade, but it would be fun to watch again.

Thank you, Stanley, for this loving tribute to a beloved classic. Here's a perplexing plot question for you: in the thrilling finale, how did Brian Cruikshank know that Hamilton Bartholomew was REALLY Carson Dyle? I've never been able to pinpoint that in the movie. Perhaps you know?
@StanleyFoss
@StanleyFoss 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm I’m going to have to rewatch it and really analyze that point? I can’t remember if he sees Regina going to meet with Bartholomew? Or maybe it’s a plot hole? I’ll look for that next time I view it 👍🏻 thanks for watching!

Hi Stanley! Here are two more for you when you re-watch the movie! 1) who do you think called Leopold's (Ned Glass) room to summon him to the lobby in the middle of the night which resulted in his throat being cut in the elevator? It must have been a voice he recognized. 2) why was Carson Dyle's brother (Cary G) checking for mail under Dyle's name if he wasn't really Dyle's brother (when Regina followed him to that location)?
@craigdforrest
@craigdforrest 2 жыл бұрын
One clue about how Brian Cruikshank knew what Carson Dyle looked like was that Cary Grant's character as a Treasury man would have access to the military files of all the culprits aka commando team, including pics. Cruikshank, in his research, would have the file & pic of Carson Dyle too. But didn't know Dyle (Matthau) was alive until the Colonnade (thinking him dead back in WW2).
@craigdforrest
@craigdforrest 2 жыл бұрын
@@jameshelsing7254 Great unsolved plot points. Perhaps to keep the mystery going for both Reggie & the audience? Not every point explained. You can also add 1) How did Dyle (Matthau) have the strength to drown a very large & powerful Scobie? 2) Same question about being able to tie up and suffocate Tex. Though Tex recognized Dyle and wrote his name on the carpet. There are no signs of struggle in the room. 3) How did Scobie get off the roof of the American Express building from such a great height? Pull himself up? With his right hand a metal claw. Hmmm. 4) If it was Dyle on the phone in the middle of the night to Gideon, why would Gideon go meet Dyle downstairs? Gideon had thought Dyle was a dead man left in France in WW2. Not only would Gideon be shocked, but why wouldn't he have sensed danger by meeting Dyle? Unless, perhaps, Dyle disguised his voice on the phone and said to Gideon there's a very important package down here in the lobby for you. A ruse to get Gideon into the elevator.

Dear Stanley! It was fun! I enjoyed it! This was just a dream a few moments ago after watching Charade for about the 5th time during the quarantine here in Manila. This is my all-time favorite Audrey Hepburn movie. It was good Cary Grant accepted 10 years after continually rejecting films offered to star with Audrey (since Roman Holiday in 1953)! Stanley Donen was brilliant together with Charles Lang, Audrey's favorite cinematographer since Sabrina! And make-up by Mr & Mrs da Rossi. And the clothes by Givenchy! All these... stars and technical combination make this film timeless. Thank you for making my dreamcome true, Stanley! God bless you with more adventures to share with us! Utterly loved your attention to detail---the same masonry chip on Walter Matthau's column. Do you think they used a real bullet to chip one column when Cary Grant fired a shot? See it in your 27:06.

Hi there! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. It was a lot of fun to make and see these places in real life so many years after Charade was made. Yeah all the actors, director and people involved really made a timeless movie. As for the gun shot, I don’t think it was real? I bet a lot of people would have been upset if they really shot a column at the Palais Royals. It could have been a fake column? Or a very small explosive device with some sort of sand in it to make it look like the column was shot? Next time I’m In Paris (whenever that will be?) I will definitely look for a small hum shot now . Thanks for watching!

Hi Stanley.......here's an update. As of yesterday, April 12, 2018, the Marigny Theater is still closed. However, the workers left one of the doors open and I stuck my head in and it looks like it's getting real close to completion. Most of the interior scaffolds are down and a glass company was installing new windows. You can smell the fresh paint, so that's a good sign things are wrapping up.

Hi Stanley......here's another update as of October 6, 2018. The Marigny Theater is still NOT finished or open yet. One of the side doors was open so I sneaked inside. It's all finished there, but there are workers all over the place on the outside. It's all painted and new glass has been installed. They seem to be very close to completion. The exterior wiring is just hanging there, so that could be all they have to do is hook up the outside lighting fixtures and they're all set to go. It's still surrounded by dirt and gravel. Hopefully it's going to be paved or there will be a muddy mess. btw......the Wheel at Place de la Concord is gone. Completely torn down. The mayor didn't want it so he ordered it dismantled.

Wow! Still working on the theater?!? This has been years in the making, but I’m glad their fixing it rather than tear it down. So cool you got to go inside. Really cool work - seeing it in 2021 almost five years later. Poignant that the official photo of JFK is seen in the embassy office interior considering Charade was released on 3 Dec 63, only 11 days after his assassination. The gray fall skies (shot in the fall of 1962, some during the Cuban missile crisis) contribute mightily to the suspense and overall tenor of the film. The dilm wouldn’t have been the same in Paris had it been shot on your contrasting sunny days
@StanleyFoss
@StanleyFoss 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! The overcast grey skies give the film a gritty feel - super sunny skies, like I experienced would have changed the vibe considerably. I didn’t realize that JFK was killed 11 days before the premiere? Interesting info 👍🏻

I have to commend the film makers for NOT including the Eiffel Tower or Arc de Triomphe as a backdrop for some of the scenes. Btw, this is generally a great way to explore a city, certainly more outside of the typical tourist paths. In London I looked up some locations for Hitchcock's Frenzy and in Paris I went for some Breathless locations.
@StanleyFoss
@StanleyFoss 3 жыл бұрын
That is pretty cool the more I think of it. It must have been really enticing to just show the big well know monuments. Yes I was thinking the same thing - I would have never gone down certain streets or visited certain neighborhoods without doing these filming locations. I stayed in the 6 arrondissement, Saint Germain. But, it’s so easy to get around Paris you can pretty much stay anywhere near the center of town and be fine for seeing plenty of Charade locations . The Palais Royale is probably a good place to start, then you could take a quick Metro ride to the Champs Elysees where quite a few locations are scattered. Hope you get to see some Charade sights!
