Looks like you have an excess of wood gas (or a lack of sufficient combustion air) in your fire box. Great illustration that once pyrolysis begins, the wood gas produced is sufficient to reach and hold temperatures required to complete the charcoal making process. I'd suggest partially closing the ball valve to meter the gas flow. The alternative is to collect the surplus gas by pumping it into an empty propane tank so it is on hand to begin heating the next charge. Looks like a very efficient rig. Would like to see more video.

Dear Torbörn - I am designing a retort now and really appreciate this and the photos video. I'm wondering if there are any "lessons learned" about your design after using it that you would be willing to share. Is it hard to empty the retort? I was thinking maybe a floor inside would ease things, though it would sacrifice some space. Also, are you satisfied with the dimensions of the materials you used? For example the size of the burn pipe and the stack for steam / excess gas? Your thoughts and experience would really be appreciated. Thanks, Edward

Hello Edward I understand that we share the same interest of making charcoal ,nice.I have also thought about some kind of floor to make it easier to empty the coal afterwards and maybe fill upp the emty space with sand to keep some heat and to get an even temperature. I am satisfied with the size and materials in it and the charcoal that it produces is of high quality. The most important I Would say is to insulate the kiln really well because in the end its the heat that does the work.Good luck Edward

Looks great! Are there any fans forcing the syngas into the primary burner? Or is it just the natural draft going up the exhaust duct?

it is only the internal pressure in the tank that pushes out the gas.

@@torbjornviklund5640 are there any over pressure safety valves or anything incase that pipe isn’t able to handle relieving all of the pressure in the tank? Or do you think that pipe is enough to keep it from over pressurizing?
