The following animation explains the process of developing charcoal filtration systems using sand. It is a simple process that helps to remove man, but not all, pollutants in water that can otherwise cause health problems.

You forgot to mention a few important steps, like washing the dust of the charcoal, letting it soak over night to remove the oils that's left, then heating it in a pot and pour water over to get the very last oils out, rinse and then put in your filtration system, this was a nice animation but definitely needs more explanation for people so they don't end up drinking grey water

I mean this filter isn't turning grey water into potable water either. Regardless of how much non carbon material you remove.

Don't get me wrong I get what you are saying but I think the creator of the video was showing basic construction with assumptions you are following basic hygiene practices. Like boiling the water after filtration to remove e coli, rotaviruses, and hep a.

Charcoal as is a bag of kingsford or from a homemade fire? If homemade fire, what type of wood do you burn?

The sand acts as a filter to catch debris like dirt, plant matter, bug larvae, etc. Charcoal, on the other hand, has a property which causes many chemicals and poisonous substances to "stick" to it. When charcoal is treated correctly, it develops an extremely dense web of microscopic pores which give it a huge amount of surface area for these chemicals to get stuck to. So basically the sand filter particles while the charcoal filters (some) poisonous chemicals and toxins.

They are highly porous, especially when pre rinsed 2 or 3 times... To remove any excess powders broken down from transporting them to your location. Especially Activated Coconut Husks Charcoals Especially Premium Sand Especially White Ceramic Pellet beads from pet stores. These are EXCELLENT FOR WATER FILTRATION DIY SYSTEMS

Use a coffee filter or cheesecloth, any food grade fabric or fine mesh will do, loads of steps were not in this video

The residue of Sand and charcoal dissapate after 2 or 3 pre rinses. Then it's considered clean bio material, with fibers that absorb contamination from water passing thru

You are correct Also adding charcoal pellets from coconut husks are excellent absorbent idea, also adding Ceramic white pellets from MarineLand.com at low price very good idea. It's best to make 2 of these filtering boxes, one as a Pre-Filter, the 2nd box as the After-Filter Will greatly extend the life of the 2nd filtering box.

if you buy your charcoal from the local hardware store chances are it has a shitload of volatile/poisonous chemicals in it...RIP

True. Use burned wood. Not the hardware store stuff. That's usually treated with flammable chemicals.

over here in aus, we can buy hardwood timber charcoal; I have heard it is just straight wood.

@@ianmcdonald8648 well it’s not straight wood (molecularly) it’s been converted to carbon. The thing is, you take ALMOST any material and if it’s burned in extreme heat without gasses/O2 the molecular structure of the burned “wood”/anything becomes close to 100% carbon (look into activated charcoal/carbon). THEN BBQ companies take that and ADD a sh*tload of petroleum products to help it burn better /quicker. If you’re looking for PURE carbon (from any source) you should be able to EAT IT much like ‘Tums’ for antacid...it’s hard to find pure BBQ carbon without additives. Because everybody wants their BBQ to fire up FAST and COOK!!! I have a bag of charcoal that I bought from the local hardware store where I can take a chuck and eat it BECAUSE IT”S (almost pure) carbon
