In this video I talk about Charge Pumps. We go through the theory - then build it in the bread board. This video shows you how to double or triple your voltage and how to invert it, say from +9v to -9v (or even down to -18v). I also show how to add more stages so you can get even higher (or lower) voltages.

Such a great little trick to get other voltages, positive as well as negative. And I really like how you summarize using different devises to create the clock and how to up the amps a bit. Great tutorial video. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for this tutorial very clear and understandable. For negative charge pump where do you connect the dc supply -9V. Thanks.

I saw a circuit where two outputs from a microcontroller alternate high and low to create a higher voltage. The circuit uses three diodes in series , and two capacitors in series with each micro's outputs. Can you explain the working of this kind of circuit? Thank you!

Why does +9 on the positive and +9 (when clock is high) on the negative "drives" the positive side to +18 v ? who is adding the voltage, I'm trying to understand the physics.

It works because what we start with at the input is DC. What we add with the oscillating signal through the capacitor is AC (It then gets turned into DC by the Diode to the right). It is a bit like when you set an oscilloscope to AC coupling, just in reverse. With the scope you want to remove the DC component of a waveform to look at the AC. Here we are adding an AC component on top of an already existing DC.. I hope this helps :)

I am in fact planning on building a HUGE voltage doubler maybe similar to charge pumps, as want to double 12 volt to 24 volt to assist the load on my new/old UPS whose Lead acid batteries are a bit worn out. Will utilize the power in my solar battery running LION I found this circuit which is easy to modify using bigger mosfets and more output capacitors www.eleccircuit.com/converter-dc12v-to-24v-2a-by-ic-40106-and-mosfet-buz11/

I know this is years later but the inverted output doesn't go from 0 to 9 volts only about 0 to 1 volt. Doesnt matter what is used for the inverter either. Strange.

Never mind, I was using LTspice I had to change the model for an output of 9 volts, default is 1 volt.
Let's build a voltage multiplier!
