Charlamagne Tha God sat down with ‘Abbott Elementary’ star and executive producer Quinta Brunson for the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Emerging Hollywood to discuss being raised as a Jehovah’s Witness in Philadelphia, how a breakup helped fuel her drive for a career in comedy, the praise she’s received for the ABC series, how her former teacher inspired her and more.

And this is why I love Abbott elementary! I don’t want a show that’s always tackling issues, especially race issues. I just wanna laugh and enjoy a show with a majority black cast!

While I understand where you are coming from. Understand that opportunities are created because of shows that tackle issues. Those shows also change minds. Im a firm believer that there is space for all types of shows.

@@kedronmarsh1773 my intention wasn’t to say we need to do away with shows that address real life issues/topics, it was to say we need a balance! Not many shows like Abbott and that’s a problem.

It really is amazing how it makes my ears perk when I hear some one was born in and now is no longer a JW. That mindset really sticks with you and it’s hard to overcome. But here we are and each day is another opportunity to unlearn the things that hold us mental captives and finally start living and being in control of our own paths instead of just waiting to be rescued.

It really is a great show. I was just saying how I was telling ppl about this show a few months ago. Cause since I've been developing my own funny black sitcom with compelling characters and stuff...I was seeing a lot of...let's just say...not so good sitcoms. So this show is very refreshing when it comes to that. I kept looking at these sitcoms like...umm....it's not even funny...my show is much funnier than that. And then I saw Abbott Elementary, I was like Yes!!!! Finally a show on that same level. Love It! Lol. FR

I totally agree. Let's get out from under the negative portrayals, stereotypical thinking and bad acting with no real life reliability like Tyler Perry and others have offered. Onward to a fresh start of young people being able to think for themselves and to recognize what is good and bad for themselves while having the ability to have conflict resolution and move on as they are open being able to accept the wise wisdom of our seasoned men and women.
