Veteran character actor and Bruce Glover’s 1930s set movies are genre classics. CHINATOWN. HARD TIMES. BIG BAD MAMA II. Glover began acting at an early age and has enhanced both big budget extravaganzas and minuscule cult favorites. In this exclusive look back, Bruce is joined by producer/host Rob Word to discuss several of his favorites that were set during the depression.
CHINATOWN (1974) has been heralded as the finest example of Film Noir in color. It would have been just as fascinating in black and white. Glover is Jack Nicholson’s detective partner in the Roman Polanski film, which was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. It was a winner for Best Screenplay written by Robert Towne.
HARD TIMES (1975) was writer-director Walter Hill’s first film as a director, and it packs a wallop. Charles Bronson is a roving bare-knuckled street fighter who becomes involved with shady con man James Coburn and physician Strother Martin. Glover is tracking Coburn to collect borrowed money. The film, set in New Orleans, captures the local atmosphere and co-stars Bronson’s wife, Jill Ireland.
BIG BAD MAMA II (1987) is a sequel to Roger Corman’s smash 1930s rural gangster film that top lined Angie Dickinson and was directed by Bruce Wynorski. Angie’s back, and she’s got Bruce to deal with.
Bruce's talented son is actor/director Crispin Glover. Of course, Bruce made westerns, too, and we will be airing his conversation about working on them in an upcoming AWOW episode.
Lots of fun in this look back at the diversity of Glover’s period-set films. This conversation was recorded April 12, 2023.

Jim Garner didn't like Bronson much, calling him a "bitter and belligerent SOB" and "Not exactly a barrel of laughs" on the set of the film they did together, "The Great Escape". But Kurt Russell who at age 12 when working with Bronson, and learning it was Charles's birthday, gave him a present of a model airplane, which he said Charles accepted without a word leaving him hurt ,and a bit perplexed wondering if he'd somehow done something to offend. Until later when, through one of the studio hands, Bronson sent for him, and with just the two of them in his dressing room, explained that he'd never gotten a birthday present before, and just didn't know how to react. What he didn't mention was that he'd grown up dirt poor in a huge family as one of fifteen children where getting enough to eat was a luxury, let alone getting a present, something one didn't even dare to dream of. Then came Kurt's birthday, and Charles, learning of it and finding out that Kurt loved skate boarding, presented the boy with a high end skate board. Same guy, two different experiences of him, each with a different takeaway impression of the man. A thing about Bronson I could never picture was of he and the extrovert comic actor Jack Klugman as roommates, which they were, as two struggling actors sharing a room and expenses in New York. A *true* odd couple, long before "The Odd Couple," the huge success Jack made on television with Tony Randall.

If you asked most movie fans what movie came to mind when mentioning BRUCE GLOVER, chances are it would be the part playing gay assassin Mr. Wint in Sean Connery's last legitimate Bond ,DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER... failing that it could be appearing in all three WALKING TALL's. And for someone here who is about to turn 91, Bruce's recollections as a character actor are very informative and sincere. He certainly "lived fully" and continues to do so with a very strong and basic attitude shaped by the Depression. Bruce definitely stayed REAL and is REAL, real in his attitude to both acting and life!

A double episode. It's a good day. Bruce Glover had so many parts in so many films and TV shows. His unique voice and manner of speaking made him perfect for slightly off kilter or totally insane bad guys. He was right that he always added something to the film whether it was on the page, or only in his mind. A straight talking, confident, working actor. He never burns any bridges but you have no illusions as to what he thought of anyone he worked with. Until this interview, I didn't know that Crispen Glover was his son. Enjoyed this episode, but then I always do.

Another fine interview. My two favorite Bronson movies, The Mechanic and Hard Times. Mr. Glover brings out his impressions very well. He gives a sense of these fellow actors with a generosity of spirit. If he didn't particularly fancy someone, he just lays out the difficulties and moves on. Normally I would ask how an actor managed to be on one particular western series, but not on another. Bruce Glover actually managed the ultimate hat trick and appeared on "The Big Valley", "Bonanza" and "Gunsmoke". In his case, however, that he never appeared as a psycho killer on "The F.B.I.", "Cannon", or "Barnaby Jones" is what is astonishing!

I didn't recognize Bruce at first, remembered him as one of Blofeld's henchman in Diamonds Are Forever, one of the few henchmen in a Bond movie that wasn't super strong and overpowering for 007. As a matter of fact he left the scene with his tail between his legs.😁 Seemed like the Diamonds set was fun to work on. I would love to meet him as I to have a ton of questions. Kind of wanted to know what Sean Connery, my favorite actor of all time, was like to work with and love to hear other stories of directors he worked with.. Great interview, Rob.
