The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I can still remember, as a college freshman, hearing the original broadcast of this marvelous reading. It is, at 81, still as fresh and inspiring today as it was for me those many decades ago !!!

Too bad that most people today don't know this great actor. All they know from old Hollywood is Marilyn Monroe & Clark Gable.

@Roger Billings Brilliant and beautifully aesthetic film. I don’t know if you’ve seen the documentary about it on KZfaq (I’m guessing you may have!), but mention just in case. It’s a shame it seems he was so insecure and the critical reception at the time made it worse. Makes you wonder what he would’ve done had it not been for those critics.

I was a student at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Ind. Mr. Laughton came there to perform. When he came on stage, no one applauded. After the program, he said he was quite offended by that.

He also did a dramatic and a comic reading using the NY Phone Directory as his script - very moving and hysterical, only reading name - address - and Phone #.
