It was funny seeing you say it was avant-garde jazz as if it were some pompous term and then discovering what it meant as the music drained you of everything and left you sweating 😂😂. It's exhausting even for me, and I've heard a fair bit of jazz, including multiple listens to this album. My dad said he likes jazz, so I played this when I was DD'ing him home from his friend's house; needless to say, he didn't mean this when he said that. Some of the best jazz albums really do leave you feeling like you had too much to eat; another one like that is Roberto Rodriguez & John Zorn - _Aguares: Book of Angels Vol. 23_ . Please peep that, and peep _0_ by Ichiko Aoba and _Ys_ by Joanna Newsom. You're the best, Smags ❤.

I love Mingus, but I wouldn’t want to listen to this album after a night of drinking lol

I adore this album because it makes me feel like I'm in the middle of some dark crime noir film and I'm slowly descending into madness. Such a breathtaking record and one that never grows old.

So cool that you picked a Mingus album! The first concert I ever went to was Mingus Big Band, so I'm super duper fond of his music. He had the most extraordinary players in his bands too.

great concert, terrible for a first listen of Coltrane imo 😭

many musicians who play this music know each other, & mingus simply finds musicians he trusts to play his music. i will say that the pianist, jaki byard, as well as the drummer, dannie richmond, are longtime collaborators with mingus. jerome richardson, the saxophonist, is also well-regarded & has played on other acclaimed mingus recordings. what a masterpiece for you to react to !
@MissjunebugfreakАй бұрын
You definitely need to check out "Let My Children Hear Music" and "Blues & Roots" for more Charles Mingus brilliance. Some other jazz albums I would highly recommend are: Get Up With It by Miles Davis Coin Chapter One by Matana Roberts Journey In Satchidananda by Alice Coltrane Pastel Blues by Nina Simone Black Unity by Pharoah Sanders Sextant by Herbie Hancock Moanin' by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

you absolutely need to check out The Mars Volta's "Frances the Mute." Long, winding prog rock opera with the perfect blend of strange, weird, experimental, and catchy. note: if you do check this out, remember that the last song, cassandra gemini, is split into a ton of parts on spotify as it's pretty long, but its still all one song. the album is 5 songs even if on spotify theres 12 tracks LOL
@bodywithoutorgans409Ай бұрын
yeah that album is insane, one of my favs.

Whatever Mingus's requirements were for his players, I'm sure they were high. Mingus was known to be pretty hot tempered, to the point where he was known as "The Angry Man of Jazz." But he made some damn good music. Maybe some of the best ever recorded. If you want more, Mingus Ah Um is another banger.

Mingus is god tier, absolutely one of the best artists ever. This one is definitely a lot to take in and digest. Mingus Ah Um is his other main classic and might be a bit more accessible. Mingus' stuff definitely has a bit of a unique feeling in jazz due to the classical influence on the composition and arrangement. But there's still a ton of personality to how he uses the soloists, he also gets pretty nuts on the bass sometimes. Definitely a unique and instantly recognizable sound even across his different eras

I have a unique one for you. It's like the Geese album 3D Country in the sense that it's a very unique and oddball mix of genres using punk rock. The album is called On Land And In The Sea by Cardiacs. I won't spoil too much, but let's just say it's Ska and there's an accordion involved.

Not sure if this would be ur thang, but if you want a real cozy but incredibly well-produced and composed album, try out Japanese band Lamp, Yume. Dreamy, lush, and jazzy instrumentals with cute and romantic-sounding vocals. In the end I just really like this album, but Lamp has recently been gaining a lot of attention and had they been a Western band they easily would've been huge in the indie scene.

This album is amazing not knocking it but if you’re looking to get into jazz you’re gonna have to look into albums more based in improvisation. I’m a huge John Coltrane fan so I recommend trying A Love Supreme, but if it’s too much for you at first My Favorite Things is the way to go. Don’t listen to the elitists that say you need a big brain for jazz you just gotta get used to the rules, or lack of rules.
