Randy certainly knows A HELLUVA LOT about how to go around diminished chords. You can almost always hear plenty of them in all of his soundtracks, and it's awesome how he does it. My personal favourite is "That'll do Babe" with Peter Gabriel. It's a real tear jerker for me.

The most emotional Randy Newman song is "When she loved me" from Toy Story 2. Heat breaking. I'd love a breakdown of that one :) Randy and Thomas Newman are some of my favorite movie composers. Those guys write with their hearts and make you feel it.

This part of the movie always gives me a lump in the throat and then goose bumps, partially because of the story and character development, but it wouldn't have the same impact without the music. Music to me is not just a random composition of notes, lyrics, etc. it's not just an artform or craft. Music is an experience. And the job of a songwriter/singer/dancer is to provide not just a good or great experience, but the best experience they can possibly give people. The experience should not only be enough to satisfy the audience but also leave them wanting more. "I will go sailing no more" is one of those such experiences: The way the song is composed with the use of different minors and majors, movements, the moments where the song can rest. Along with actual mixing of themes (it starts off reminiscent of a time before in a way, building up to a triumphant middle, ending off with a more somber/tragic reality check), it's so beautifully crafted that people can either keep listening to this one song over and over, or they can check out other Randy Newman songs. It's a prime example of why I love music and why I love making music so much.

the toy story song that breaks my heart every time is in the sequel, sung by Sarah McLachlan, titled "when somebody loved me". Gorgeous arrangement and performance by randy and Sarah.

This scene is a great example of show, don't tell. You see Buzz learning that he can't fly instead of just being told that he learned he can't fly.

The way he gets so excited is just so wholesome!

Randy Newman is a lyrical, musical, and comedic genius. One of the first songs I learned on piano was his song “short people.” The Toy Story franchise would not be the same without him. Nobody is mentioning it, but I loved his song from the 4th movie “I can’t let you throw yourself away.”

I've always been a big fan of the key changes in You'll Be In My Heart from Tarzan. Starts in F major, then to D major for the chorus, back to F, back to D, then up to E for the climax. Really powerful and fun sound.

Love how Charles can manage to explain a lot of this without much in-depth theory, just the logic of where some lines move and others stay the same to create specific feelings, and it makes perfect sense.

I think his "so long" score in Toy Story 3 and "When sombody loved me" are also fantastic compositions.

Those first three chords are a great example of what I’d call “rotating”, or changing the chords around the melody to make the melody note move place in the chord without actually changing. So that G note starts out as the 1 of the G, then becomes the 3 of the Eb, and then the 5 of the C.

Man, when it changes to A flat and Newman sings, "But no! It can't be true!" my eyes well up with tears. It's so triumphant and full of new hope. It's easy to show characters experiencing emotions. It is far more difficult to make the audience experience the character's emotions. A lot of people I know say that Toy Story 2 is better than 1, but I can't choose between them. This intimate character focus is exactly why.

These videos are perfect to put on while doing dishes or laundry or something, you don't necessarily have to WATCH it to listen to all the sounds and ideas

Randy's arrangements and orchestrations are like the platonic ideal of every piece of music he's ever composed. I don't understand how he does it, but he finds every piece that fits perfectly in every place, every time, and creates something truly profound.

Charles, I know this isn't something you would usually do on your channel but do you think you could possibly do a video reacting to the Santa Clara Vanguard's 2018 performance titled "Babylon"? It's a very beautiful performance that is an abstract way of depicting the story of the tower of babel, hence the show title. The props are supposed to represent city buildings and skyscrapers. All the corps members are on the same big building (the tower of babel) and are struck down, forced to speak different languages. The beginning with the intense music and the screaming is representing the people unable to communicate. The drill shows this is as the guard and brass are separated. The two soloists on the props are like two people having a conversation. The big hit during the ballad and last movement represents the people coming together and understanding each other. The drill also conveys this as everyone is doing the same or reflecting the other half of the corps. One of the best designed shows ever!

I've always loved the sound of the monsters inc. soundtrack, it's probably the first jazz related thing I ever heard in my life. I especially love the scare floor track, fitts the theme of the film so well.

Fun fact: pedal tone comes from the organ, since on the organ the lowest tone that is held is often played by the foot pedals

It has been 25 years since I saw this movie for the first time and this part still makes me so emotional. As a kid it made me sad that Buzz could not fly and I cried. But now as an adult you understand that for Buzz is just reality hitting you in the face. He discovers that his life is not what he thought it was. He doesn't know other life than being a space ranger and he literally falls in a place where he doesn't know what is purpose is anymore. It's heartbreaking. And the music is the cherry on top. What a masterpiece is this movie.

If you're sticking with Randy Newman, the obvious choice is "You've Got a Friend in Me" for some ragtime goodness. I'd also throw in the wistful and heartbreaking "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story 2.

I still remember what it felt like to work on this sequence. Even unfinished and in progress it was pretty moving. Randy really crushed it here.
