Season Change: Six Months of Growth and Succession Plantings at Homeacres

To show you the amazing amount of growth, harvest and then regrowth of new plantings, through the busiest six months.
During all this time I add no feeds, fertilisers or extra compost. We mulch the beds once a year in late autumn, with compost. Paths receive a little wood chip as you can see.
No dig means healthy growth and almost no weeding needed.
For more about this part of my garden, see this video about the Three Strip Trial • Growth differences in ...
Discover more about no dig and succession cropping with my online courses
charlesdowding.co.uk/product/... which are seeing a good uptake in the USA.
Homeacres is zone 8, but our summers are zone 6, rarely hot! You can see live weather updates on my website, from the weather station here www.charlesdowding.co.uk/weat..., you will need to refresh the page.
Filmed from April to October 2019 by David Adams at Homeacres, Somerset, UK. Edited by him in winter and with photos from Charles' library.

My mom is 78 and living alone about 2 miles away. I built her first veg bed as a early birthday present in March, just before the lockdown. It has become my mom’s pride and joy. It gives her something to do every day and we always have loads to talk about. Every couple of days, I sit outside with her, at least 8 feet apart with a mask, and we sit and admire her growing crop and chat about her “babies.” She had two barasiccas taken by a gopher which has added fun drama into our extended family zoom chats. She now wants me to build her a second bed and keeps bugging me for more plants. Gardening has been a life saver for both of us. 🥰

21:55 I dice up left over bread into small pieces and put them near my brassicas. The common sparrows and common blackbirds would eat the bread. And when they see the cabbage butterfly/caterpillars/earwigs they would chase and eat them too. And this became a habit for the birds too. Even when I don't give them bread, they are out in my garden chasing and eating the pests.

First, thanks again for sharing from your amazing pool of hard-earned knowledge. Second, extreme compliments to the video editor who must be in my head; every time you say something about "10 days ago" and my brain says "I wish I could see that" the video cuts to a view of it and grants my wish. Third, I have to admit I'm suffering severe garden envy! It's absolutely lovely!

I wish I could do what you're doing full time. Oh well that's life, and at least I have an allotment to do it part time in. By the way those cabbages were huge. Don't think I've ever seen such big cabbages in my life. Then I grew up with the round cabbages, both being grown by my late father and sold in the supermarkets. It's only recently I've come across the pointed cabbages. FYI, I grew up in New Zealand, but I'm in the UK at the moment, playing my British citizenship card I inherited from my parents.

This is such a wonderful record of the year and so inspiring. I have been following the guidance in your diary this year for my first year of growing vegetables in my garden (in a new relatively small bed mage last autumn). I have got so much pleasure from it Charles that I must really thank you. I don't think I would have managed so well in the early months since February. To see the plot growing so many vegetables that will come to harvest in June and July is so exciting. I am already sowing and planning for their replacements as well as planning to create more beds. This video record will really help me to make the right choices for the next crops. Thanks again for all your help through the posts you make.

I'm new to the channel and returning to growing a few veg in my overgrown back garden. Charles' enthusiasm is infectious and his clear explanations make sense to a newbie like me. Up to now I've adopted a bit of a scatter gun approach but since finding the channel I've ordered the diary and calendar to aid with coming up with a sensible plan to make maximum use of my available area - probably a bit less than Charles' small garden but I hope to get the maximum from it. I hope we'll draw new customers to us this year, but we also have to cancel our farm tours as far as we can see now....I hope we'll all come out of this together in a good way. So nice to see the growing of different vegetables through the months. And to hear how much in weight is picked and then seeing the new varieties replacing them. Brilliant as always

Radicchio hearts chopped up and made into a Risotto taste lovely. My german friend made some at the home last year and it was delicious. Cant find Radicchio hearts in the depopulation stores in UK! Absolutely love your vids and market garden. I am in my second year ding my own veg growing. You are an inspiration.

It's educational and so inspiring watching your videos. This is my second year gardening and I'm really expanding, too. I have several raised beds in one area of my garden fenced off to keep my dog out. But now I'm expanding in the larger open area. I'll have to come up with creative ways to protect my plants between growing in pots and screening off individual raised beds. Oh, if I could just teach my sweet dog about the no dig concept! Very excited to say I just started my first compost pile!

Yes but your dog is probably keeping away the cats, squirrels and foxes that will happily dig holes everywhere including where you just planted!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching how your garden changed throughout the seasons and what lovely colours the plants gave. Amazing amount of vegetables you grow, that cabbage that was 5kg looked like a pantomime prop 😀. Take care 😊

Really thoughtful and inspiring. Thank you so much for showing the progress of those successions through the seasons as well as mentioning the amounts. It makes planning a lot easier for newbies like me. Your videos and website are the reason I’ve started to grow food instead of perennials. 💕
