This Dodge Dart Phoenix is a beautiful example of pure Americana!! One thing about these Chrysler products of the era is the gas &brake pedals! Yes, I love those octopus pedals almost as much as I love Dagmar bumpers!!! ☺

growing up as a kid in the early/mid sixties, there were lots of these cars around, and their aggressive styling scared the bejeebers out of me...was sure that they were out to eat me. but now, they are just killer in a good way...good grief, just look at this spectacular specimen. Uh. May. Zing. I know the Jetson's metaphor is over-used with these cars, but really, nothing else personifies that postwar futurism than the forward look Chryslers...luv them...even if they are out to eat me.

I own a 1960 Dodge Seneca two door sedan. It's not as equipped as this one, but still a beautiful, pristine example. This was also the first year for the slant 6 engine (the "leaning tower of power") which is in my car.

These cars bring back a lot of memories for me. When I was five years old, I told everyone that when I grew up, I was going to buy a '60 Dodge Dart. Even at that young age I thought they were beautiful cars. All these years later I haven't changed my mind, they are beautiful from every angle. Thanks Charles for posting this.

The steering wheel is right out of the Jetsons. And the see through speedometer, that has to be a forerunner of the new heads up displays right? The windows go down and it's one long open space, I love that (no column between windows). Great looking beautiful car.

Hello Charles, my uncle Bill, Dad’s older brother, owned a blue Dodge Phoenix four door sedan here in Australia when they were new. Among the largest cars here in the day. I remember being driven around Sydney in it as a youngster, sliding around on the back seat. Bill flew fighter planes in the RAAF in WW2 and he drove it like he was still, flying his Kittyhawk in a crash dive. Memorable to this day.

Designed by Virgil M. Exner and Cliff Voss, in 1959. It was based on the 1960 Dodge Polara and Matador models, exclusively designed by Virgil Exner. Cliff Voss, Exner's assistant designer from 1958 to 1961, was given the assignment to do the overall design of the 1960-61 Dodge Dart low-priced line. The Phoenix was the 2-door hardtop or convertible model only. The Polara and Dart share some components, but their rear quarter panels, although similar, are not the same, and are different components. The stamped aluminum front grille of the Dart series was easily damaged.

When I was about 10 years-old my Dad had one - all white over gold interior. It still remains one of my all-time favorites. One thing I noted on this feature car is that it had amber turn signals, which actually didn't come about until 1963-64 era. I do recall one could buy a small bottle of amber paint and upgrade their lenses, coating the inside of the clear cover.

My first car was a ‘71 Dodge Dart “Swinger” in yellow with a black vinyl top and black interior...it reminded me of a bumblebee...the only things it shared in common with the 1960 model were the 318 V8, the 3 spd “Torqueflite” automatic transmission and the AM radio. I much prefer the 1960 model here on this week’s Joyride! The late ‘50’s-early ‘60s Chryslers, Plymouths and Dodges remain at the pinnacle of automotive styling in the annals of Americana. Great show, Mr. Car!

I think Sgt. Carter on Gomer Pyle had a red 1960 Dart Phoenix 4-door hardtop. In one scene it was crushed by a wrecking ball. My dad bought a new 1960 Dart Seneca 4-door sedan with the slant 6. He always said it was the worst car he ever owned. Underpowered and couldn't get out of its own way, and it had continual problems with the manual transmission. He traded it in on a new 1964 Dart, with the same engine and a manual transmission, and it was smaller and ran better. He kept the 64 for about 20 years and had almost no problems out of it.

I grew up a child of the 60's when 50's cars were just old, dime-a-dozen, beat up, garish and clunky. If your dad STILL drove a 50's car you were teased or bullied, back then it was the same thing. 50's cars that were well kept were usually old man driven, you know, curb feelers, lightning straps, steering wheel knobs and a compass spinning somewhere on the dash. We loved clean lines and hot engines. Steve McQueen's Mustang, the Dodge Charger, these were the cars that you paid attention to. BOY WERE WE WRONG! This vehicle is a work of art, like almost everything C..P. features. I love watching these videos and taking a deep dive back into the cars from The Greatest Decade In Automotive History! God Bless American Auto Manufacturers. These really were wonder years!

In 1960, Dodge really had just one car, in 2 wheelbase sizes...the Pioneer/Seneca/Phoenix were the names for the 3 trimlines with the smaller Dart wheelbase, and the Matador/Polara trimlines for the larger wheelbase. 1961 was similar for fullsize, but Dodge introduced the Lancer in that year as their subcompact, and then in 1963, the subcompact was renamed Dart.
