The sad and unfortunate truth is that the vast majority of these guys ARE this creative and motivated outside of prison. The problem is that they put that energy into being a criminal in order to make a living or as a roundabout way to fund their substance addiction. Been working my ass off for almost 10 years now with this company and worked my way up to the office from being a grunt putting in literal blood sweat and tears. Proved myself over and over again and was up for a promotion to middle management. I had everyone's support, with 4 time employee of the month and outstanding experience in my field under my belt. Then, friend of some of the people in management applied for the job and she got it. Reminded me why I hate "honest" working. I haven't slipped up, it just made me consider it for a hot minute and reminded me why society sucks. Told my coworker who knows about my past "See, this is exactly why people become criminals."

Having been a CO, I can at least say this, the ingenuity of inmates is absolutely insane, saw a dude literally make a cake out of ramen and chocolate and something else using a microwave and it was pretty damn good

Used to work commissary at my local county jail as it was handled by a private company. This is spot on. I still make this ramen thing that I can't remember the name of, but it's basically ramen with a cheese packet, some of the spicy smoked sausage, and then they just let it sit in hit water for like 5 minutes and eat it like a burrito with the sausage inside the noodles.

When I was a CO I worked a unit where we put all the new inmates before they were sorted into pods. we had 3 workers. They basically had a job where they watched all the new guys to make sure they adjusted well and didn’t do shit like hurt themselves. Actually some genuine dudes, serving time in county for some dumb shit like alimony payments or assault or FTAs idk I didn’t ask too much. But they showed me how to make shit like this when everyone else was locked in and they were out by themselves and had time. it was always funny watching them. I’m a cop now I hope those guys are out and living good lives.

Prisons won't rehabilitate inmates because they're privately-run and their entire profit model is built on repeat business.
