I always liked the Long way round and Long way down shows. Even with a million dollar budget, sponsorships from every item they used in the show, support vehicles, 3 lady’s in an office doing all the paperwork and visa’s, a fixer in every country, someone managing the hotels they sleep in etc etc. I would do the same in a heartbeat if I would have given a change to travel around the world like they do. But my respect really goes to the likes of Itchy Boots, On her bike, Lyndon Poskitt and Got2go. They do it by themselves with some companies supporting them but nothing like a major production and supporting crew.

Think about it like the production company. It'd be a pretty shit programme if they broke down and couldn't finish wouldn't it?? wouldn't make much money on a 2 episode series. Dakar rally has support vehicles, maybe they should just go it alone......

@transporter1387 3 жыл бұрын
@@rducko89 Agreed, its a major production costing millions of bucks, with support from world leading manufacturers. BUT its as entertaining as a major movie :-) and they do their own stunts ;-) Lets just take it as it is, entertainment without CGI, dealing with the real people they meet, and despite unparralled back-up they still have to ride them 13000 miles :-)

They can start in Alaska ride across Canada to the East, to NY and then back Southwest to Mexico and down South America to Argentina, then cross to Africa and ride up to Scandinavia and then Southeast back to Thailand and cross to Australia then ride up to New Zealand. That would give us plenty of episodes to watch and if the Harley makes it, ppl might stop bashing them.

The big problem's still with electric bikes or even car's is that for something that actually has some sort of reasonable range the price is out of the reach of most people. Until they come up with and resolve the issues with solid state batteries I think most people won't take up the electric option until the range is satisfactory as in the Tesler, however the Tesler is in excess of $81,000 which is double the price of a Peugeot 3008 which is in itself a very well appointed and high spec car, be it petrol. I find the same issues with my electric bike, if it's cold and you could be showing 2 bar's, the moment you use the throttle it drains the battery instantly which causes the battery icon to start flashing and eventually it just simply shuts down. However if you throttle off the 2 bar's come back. The same happens if I go to a higher level of assist, say 3-5 you can literally see the battery going down. This is a common problem because of the high current draw's and I noticed exactly the same issue with the Nissan Leaf. If pushed for performance you could literally see the battery level falling before your eyes. I'm sorry guy's but you had all sort's of back up vehicles for this trip, which the average Joe doesn't have, so what do you do then without the back up if you run out of power due to unforseen circumstances-you're basically stuck.

Luckily I managed to take one of these H-D Livewire bikes out for a test, I must admit it was fantastic, a hoot to ride. It would make perfect sense as a commuter bike, unfortunately it's so expensive +/- 30 thousand pounds "is a lot of potatoes", ( Gomez Addams) for any motorcycle. Electric vehicles should at least be VAT exempt!

@@G58 I sort of understand what you are saying as the adventure is all about the challenge and overcoming adversity and revelling in the freedom of motorcycling in amazing places .... However, this Long Way motorcycling series is all about an income generating high quality TV production that will appeal to a diverse range of audiences. I don't doubt they enjoy motorcycling as much as you, me, Lydon Poskitt or the guys you mentioned, but they are also entertainers for a living. On the LWD series when I met them in Zambia on my KTM I guarantee I had a better time than they did. Chapter 1 of www.bigbiketrip.net. I know they cruised passed South Luangwa Park just before I ran into them that is undoubtedly one of best game reserves in the world....and an amazing bit of riding. I suspect because road there was far too challenging for Mrs McGregor or because they had a rigid schedule which must be a nightmare because most of time you only make the "shall I go left or right" decision when you get there. Most people who watch the series will enjoy it because its a vicarious adventure for armchair warriors. They both have fans who will enjoy seeing them and people will enjoy the scenery of South America. I will watch just to scrutinise the electric bikes. You can't not like a bike that does 0-100 kph in 3 seconds.... Even if it has the battery life of my iPhone

@G58 3 жыл бұрын
Rupert U I respect you and your achievements. I’m so far beyond being impressed by these two or their ridiculous PR stunt. And as for liking a gigantic toaster that’s so bad they had to take a spare? I don’t care if it gives me blojobs, delivers pop tarts in response to my brain registering hunger, and doubles up as a lion proof tent in TWO seconds in response to a lion’s brain registering hunger (I hate lions), the whole thing is fake. If some people are still impressed by their fake jeopardy antics, then I pity them. It’s their responsibility to cure their own ignorance. The reason for the long delay, and no updates for the 8 months since they got back, is probably because the editing (to make them NOT look like the greedy fools they are, and the giant toasters the useless non environmental pieces of garbage they are, took forever. Plus, my guess is that since this was designed as a piece of climate change/low carbon propaganda by that failed gift shop/industrial engine museum/import company in Milwaukee, I’m guessing that the nightmare of their joint agendas also caused issues. This is delusional nonsense. I hope it fails. But much more importantly, I hope it exposes the truth about this hideous scam being foisted on humanity. Finally, do you know the real irony? Much of the world’s lithium deposits are locked up in salt flats in South America. That’s why this disgusting stunt is so much more than the TV spectacle you’re portraying it as. Selling sustainable energy whilst promoting the rape of another continent to feed corporate greed on the scale necessary to perpetuate the next phase of this scam is bad enough. But it will cost lives. Do some research, then tell me how impressed I should be by those acceleration times. Ride safe Peace

Really would like to watch this having been a fan of the previous adventures, and owning them on DVD. But I won't be subscribing to Apple TV to see this one. It should be offered on Blue Ray and DVD too but my guess is Apple won't let that happen.

"Carbon Neutral" my backside. The electricity they used was probably from coal fired power stations and these batteries are very carbon intensive to produce and have their own ecological issues. There are several studies that show that a fuel efficient car has a smaller footprint than a Tesla.

Always nice to hear from Charley he is such a likeable sort. Not really a lot learned though, that I didn't already didn't know from watching the first 5 episodes. Something that has come up again is the fact that Harley to adapt these bikes took a massive after hour effort from their engineers for which Harley made sure the whole world know that they were paid nothing for this. Harley must be in pretty dire straits. This venture is going to produce the kind of publicity to put their name on most of the motorcycle enthusiasts in the free world and yet Harley thinks so little of their engineers that it must be common practice to put little value on the employee's families and leisure time. The other thing of note was that when he asked problems with the bikes noting the frame-breaking on the BMW. Charley said they had no problems. I felt this was a poor comparison as these Harleys were not carrying anywhere near the weight of the previous trips. This trip, unfortunately, was not a camping trip like the others more of a hotel trip. As it had to be because of a lack of infrastructure for charging the bikes. Up until episode 5, they never struggled uprighting the bikes by themselves because they were so under burdened. They didn't have to be prepared to spend most of their nights in the wilderness and all the equipment to do that. That said, the demand for mechanics will disappear as an occupation in the future, simply because of the lack of parts on electric vehicles to fix. Alas, I will lament the loss of learning and talking about valves, bores, clutches and Desmodromic actions. Transistors and diodes just don't have the same mystic that mechanical systems do.

In 2010 the 2-seat all-electric SRZero built by Imperial College(London) EV "Racing Green" radicals far exceeded what Ewan et al have attempted ten years later: in 2010 they drove 16,000 miles from Alaska to the southernmost tip of Argentina down the Pan American Highway - and BBC World filmed the whole thing - it became one of the most popular, widely-viewed docu-series they ever broadcast. The SRZero averaged over 260 miles per charge - ten years ago ! Oh - and they were powered by Chinese "ThunderSky" li-ion batteries. The S. American segment is still fully viewable on KZfaq(links below). A full detailed written travelogue of the entire trip is also available here: www.racinggreenendurance.com/blog/?tag=srzero BBC World - the 6-episode SRZero S.American leg: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9Skab2ntJ6zXYU.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jppld8-rm7y1oWg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mN2ZdZher527e4U.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7VdgMx41rOwn4k.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rtF0aZuGt8uYh58.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/js6KfK5isN7aZnU.html They also drove the SRZero 290 miles from London to Paris - in 2010 - on a single charge before heading off to Alaska for the main 26,000 mile EV endurance trip - video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/psimdZCduZ7RZ3k.html ....furthermore(!) they got there with 14% charge remaining Paul G

Great Interview Graham. Seems like Charlie was struggling for words at times - head injury? His face when you asked him "why Apple TV" was a picture! Think this was a bad move, the reach of the series will be very low - not good for them or Harley.

You just need to change your perspective. If you ride one for a while, you will learn just how capable they are. I bicycled across the US many years ago, averaging about 90 miles a day. On an electric bike, you would have a blast covering 100 to 150 miles a day and getting to visit with many folks that you would have blown past on your V-strom. (or GS or...)

Good interview. I think this will help with attitudes to EV in terms of usage Vs range argument. I'm looking at an artisan kolter for green lanes and commuting well with in its range. Prices are starting to come down for cars and bikes then it just become a choice of what fuel works for you. Not down with the carbon neutral talk thought because no personal transport is but yes it's lower than combustion. Hopeing for an off road review of the artisan to help my decision.

Great interview though just another money making vehicle to keep Charley and others gainfully employed; the use of Electric was a USP as Charley said, not the reason for the trip as it hindered more than helped and driving with diesel sprinters with diesel generators really isn’t that climate friendly surely?!? Still I’ll be watching for sure and BTW Charley, I for one commute 120 miles per day (on my GSA I might add!!) so there are some of us out there, but accepting I am mad!!!👍😊👌
