HAPPY BRAT DAY TO ALL THOSE WHO CELEBRATE! Von Dutch + Club Classics are absolutely on repeat, 360 is the daily prayer-- I finally have succumbed to the world of CharliXCX and wow this album has very much sold me-- Charli occupies a unique space in the pop landscape where she has larger, mainstream leverage while still maintaining her native sense of experimentation.
While some may feel left out of the music, I think her strength lies in creating music for a very specific audience, using her well-earned respect to bring up unseen voices along the way.
0:00 - Brat is finally here
1:12 - Does exclusivity have to be a bad thing?
2:10 - Charli's unique position in pop
4:20 - The critique of the 360 music video and overall Brat rollout
5:30 - Is validity only earned through exposure?
6:39 - Not everything is meant for you
9:08 - Charli and the art of curation
11:11 - Make the pedestal personal
13:15 - Exclusive vs. exclusionary
15:00 - Bringing back the mysticism of pop

The 360 video literally opens with the girls elevating someone who is not seated at the table. I think you nailed this analysis! So much love for Charli for so long and love feeling like I get to be part of her mythology as a mere witness.

I really really admire how often Charli XCX collabs with trans people and particularly trans women. Trans women are so often on the cutting edge of music and I think often times Charli’s openness to collab with less mainstream queer artists serves her SO MUCH. ‘So I’ made me sob like a little baby. Rip Sophie. Brat was such an incredible album, thank you for your video!!

That would be black queer people babe which Charlie XCX never works with. I hate to do this but this is another white girl pop star. Stop pretending she isn’t. Y’all don’t rep black queer underground artists EVER.

She's the people's princess for real music & art & lore lovers. She is and has been the answer to the music industry's struggle to actually gain a steady footing ever since getting a major label contract and selling records became no longer cool/no longer the end all be all of success in the music industry. She actually had the courage to experiment and to do the traditional thing a bit differently. She has blazed a trail and navigated the new music industry really successfully while showing you don't need taylor-ariana-katy-dua level success to be incredibly loved and influential. By straddling the underground music world and the mainstream music world she solidified a unique and captivating spot in between the 2. The impact she's had on culture and music is unmatched.

That guy on twitter has such an odd take considering the first lyric of 360 is, “I went my OWN WAY and I made it” which tells us that our individuality is what can propel us to being the best versions of ourselves if only we believe in it

i think people who feel excluded by it feels entitled to be centered or catered to. I feel like she was speaking about her life and you don't have to take it literally... it's about the attitude. she's bringing us with her in this attitude... and most importantly, the beat is awesome.

Currently going down the Charli rabbit hole cuz of this amazing album which led me to here and I couldn't be happier. i enjoy the silly meta commentary in her lyrics and how much she shouts other artists out. As a hip hop fan, this aspect (plus her braggadocio) reminds me of rap. When you said the words "worldbuilding" and "mythology" it clicked for me - that's exactly why I've grown to like her so much. Great breakdown and i look forward to more of your thoughtfulness :)

I love her references in her music because it feels like me referencing my own friends in that same way. and she also said in a video recently about like dressing for brat summer how all you need is like...a white tank top and a pack of cigs lol like it's exclusive yet if you want to get it, you're totally invited. actually the invitation has already been sent.

now that brat is out and I've had some TIME to listen and chew on it I think my favs of the new stuff are probably Apple, Sympathy is a Knife, and Spring Breakers but we will see once those remixes drop. Everything is Romantic close contender as well but it's pretty hard to choose on an album of no skips 😵‍💫 Pleasantly surprised by the more introspective lyrics here and there I wasn't expecting and not surprised but delighted by the banging beats/production

Wow I luv this because yeah especially with the feminine reading of this album of how woman In particularly get so pitted against each other and questioned there validity just because they’re succeeding and you don’t instantly understand what they’re doing even tho ironically this people preach to be open to such obscure things lol but I luv that quote you pulled out in the beginning with sour grapes cause that’s so true like I think is just circling and picking and choosing how we cut off certain “successful” people is just wasting time to bring up everyone together it really makes me think of one of my favorite video essays with is contrapoints envy and seriously I think this is so much of the issues we deal with especially with the internet

Like low key I’ve been thinking like is this her artpop? I don’t know if I’m taking that too far but I feel like we’re gonna start seeing a lot more of this production with hyperpop actually creeping more into mainstream and this concept especially with how artists have been treating community with fans recently especially with more anti capitalist and how that relates to the privacy invasion of fame and the internet and Stan culture and the hot and cold treatment of these celebrities but also like artists and humans and that’s what so much of what brat is about and inviting anyone in especially with all the parties she’s been throwing it’s very communal in a way

Amazing video, to the point and correct. Just want to say (having seen way too many Charli interviews) she was aware very early on in her career that she can be viewed by the public as being unfriendly, standoff-ish, mean, or just not as approachable. she's battling a kind of automatic negative public-perception, and I believe her label gave her this info back in her Sucker/Fancy era... so she really said fuck it ever since & went on to make more influential pop/electronic music than many of her contemporaries. She will always go her own way and I respect the hell out of that.

Your breakdown of 360 video is pretty much my thoughts. I will say that i personally feel ambivalent because im not partial to the internet it girl/ model/actress culture because its jarring for me to see most of them being white and with similar body types and i dont want to get too into the discourse of that (I will even admit that when i watched the video i felt disapointment specifically because i wished ayo edebiri appeared given that we see rachel senott). BUT! I took a step back and thought 'dude who cares these are obviously just charli's friends chill out'. I can see that charli does not intend exclusion at all. In fact, putting aside my mixed feelings on the music video, i love the song 360 itself and i do sing to myself naked in the mirror "im so julia!" And i think thats what the song is really about. Its for average people like me to sing along and feel that 'Actually you are hot. That girl you see smiling in the mirror is fucking hot. You ARE comparable to julia fox and you should say it!'

I think people, especially those at the bottom, are reaching a breaking point. We’re no longer hesitant to criticize celebrities, whether it’s for valid reasons or not. I think people are just angry, and sometimes that anger gets misdirected at individuals instead of systems. I don’t like Charli Xcx. Probably because she reminds me of the rich white kids in lower Manhattan who probably don’t give a shit about the homeless but act like they do for internet points. There are also other stuff at play. But I think what we’re experiencing is a shift wherein celebrities are no longer these admired deities who could do no wrong. I don’t know, but what I do know is Charli probably represents to a lot of people a kind of person they dealt with in high school or in real life. A kind of person who relishes in their beauty or wealth and parades it unapologetically. That shit can enrage people, especially those who’ve never known wealth or are seen as ugly.

i’ve been a die hard fan of charli’s since i discovered her (outside of her early 2010 hits) back in 2020…and your comment really resonates with me. i’ve been following this album rollout and really enjoy the concept, aesthetic, etc. of this era. in other words, i 100% get what she’s going for, with all the subtle nuances included. i think your comment resonates so deeply because i too experience this sort of rage in relation to systemic issues such as class and wealth disparity. tbh it might come from a place of jealousy and insecurity for me? the album for me translates to rich (white and/or racially ambiguous)girls and gays who fit the beauty standard. the insecurity comes from the fact that i’m not them and i’ll probably never be viewed like them. once again i know that the album is very nuanced underneath the whole “brat” concept and im honestly just trying to overcome my insecurities and constant comparison…but those are just some initial feelings.

@@joshuadixon8394 I feel you. I’m black so that places me far away from her audience 😂. I guess the best thing for us to do is to not only consume the art that they (the major labels, etc.) create but also make art for ourselves and people like us. That rage you feel towards systems that keep you down can be used to create an art piece, music, or whatever. Or you could use that rage to join a left-wing collective, preferably an anarchist one. I don’t want to be envious of individuals, for it’s systems that oppress us, and it can also be a waste of time. Which is why I think we should use our envy, anger and violence to attack police, harm institutions, and form communities without hierarchies. I say this Joshua because while envy itself can sometimes be a bit destructive, if used correctly, it could be a tool to help us see who our true enemies are and help to build a much fairer, more egalitarian world.

This is such a valid opinion and I understand it. However, I feel like if you feel this towards her latest release, then "Brat" achieved it's point and somehow also not? Because in this one interview of Charli, she said that sometimes people can be a brat because they are, but other times, it's to hide their insecurity and for the sake of protection. And that album encapsulates that vulnerability under the guise of being a brat. I hope that when you can, give the whole album a listen 🫶
@valuelight
@valuelight 2 ай бұрын
@@lankyimnida595 I hear you. I’m just tired of hearing about the struggles of hot and rich people 😂 Like have you ever noticed how most media is from the perspective of incredibly privileged people, and it usually just consists of them bemoaning the downsides of wealth and being desired? Where’s the media that takes the perspective of poor people, or fat people, or socially awkward people, or religious people who feel uncomfortable in the secular world and feel that they’re being pressured into partaking in a lifestyle they don’t want to partake in? I guess my problem is that Brat is very much par for the course and not unusual at all, and I guess I’m just sick of the same-old-same-old, you feel me? Fantano even gave her a 10, so I guess celebrity culture reigns supreme. Like we spend so much of our time deifying people just because they’re rich, white, and hot. And when they show a modicum of humanity, we go crazy and act as if what we’re hearing is the second coming of Jesus 😂

I don’t like the message that being confident is enough to succeed. You can believe in yourself and still be a fucking failure. I hate this whole trend of “be yourself”, “be a girlboss”, “I don’t need people”, etc. Fuck personalities. I hate celebrity culture so much. The fact that we spend more time putting famous people on pedestals instead of fighting systems. Also, the women in that video are pretty popular. This idea that she’s uplifting unknown personalities is BS
