Synopsis :- Movie star Shelah Fayne is making a picture on location in Honolulu, Hawaii. She summons mystic adviser Tarneverro from Hollywood to help her decide whether to marry wealthy Alan Jaynes, a man she has known for only a week. Her friend Julie O'Neil worries, however, that the famous psychic has too much influence over Fayne. Meanwhile, Julie has fallen in love herself with local publicity director Jimmy Bradshaw.
Honolulu Police Inspector Chan pretends to be a humble merchant, but Tarneverro sees through his impersonation. Chan mentions to him the yet unsolved murder of film star Denny Mayo, committed years before.
Then Jimmy finds Shelah's body; she has been murdered. Julie makes him remove Shelah's ring before calling for the police.
Chan investigates. He invites Tarneverro to assist him. Tarneverro reveals that Shelah told him she was in love with Denny and was responsible for his death, but kept quiet to protect her career.
The suspects are many, but after various startling revelations, Chan eventually identifies the killer and the connection to Danny Mayo's death.

Since I live here it's eye opening to see what Oahu used to look like. In the opening sequence with the surfing and Diamond Head in the background there are now beach front condos all along the shore line. The first beach scene I believe is from Kailua Beach and the creek that runs under the bridge is all covered with trees on either side of the stream. Lastly that monument they pass by in the car (4:44) is still there but now beach front houses are behind it and you cant see the water like it shows in the movie as they pass by.

Until this one, the oldest movie I'd ever seen with Robert Young was 1936's "Stowaway" with Shirley Temple. Shirley played yet another orphan, this one in Shanghai. She actually learned some Mandarin for the movie, but discovered none of the Chinese actors she worked with spoke that dialect. Maybe if Shirley ever made a movie with Warner Oland he would have taught her some Swedish.

It's a bit funny that you mention Shirley Temple. The 2 Charlie Chan movies "Honolulu" and "Reno" (1938 and 1939) have Eddie Collins in them, who was in the Shirley Temple movie "The Blue Bird" (1940.) Eddie was in supporting roles in the Charlie Chan movies.

I like these movies and this is a good transfer, But surely the aspect ratio should be about 4:3 and not 16:9. The top and bottom black bars suggest that the image is cropped top and bottom but perhaps also stretched horizontally. In any case it would be great to see it redone with the full image and no distortion.

Since nobody seemed to be paying attention: There was NO son of Charlie Chan in this movie. Charlie Chan's assistant here was a Japanese-Hawaiian cop named Kashimo, who was even stupider than all the later Chan sons combined (the character came from the original novel). "Black Camel" was Warner Oland's second appearance as Chan, and is the oldest surviving Chan movie (four others from the same time are considered lost). Favorite line: After Kashimo botches something: Chan: "Kashimo, you are zebra!" Kashimo: "Zebra? What that?" Chan: "Sport-model jackass!" It was, as they say, A Different Time ...

I call it good entertainment. This film and others do not need to apologize for their content- They just use tried-and-true drama/comedy formulas in the movies especially in the murder mysteries. The light comedy offered by the police assistant and then by Charlie Chan’s sons are just that. If some people don’t find it entertaining or funny or appropriate, then they can tune in to the postmodern violent apocalyptic films that seem to be popular today.

I wonder why shan't and shall were dropped by schools in the postwar era. Except for quoting, "I shall return," and watching old movies, you don't hear it anymore. I don't know when the UK and the Commonwealth countries dropped it. In the US it didn't last in education for the Baby Boomers. In fact, neither did the 1930s accurate, according to French and Spanish, pronunciations of lingerie and rodeo, etc. (Why Canadians say lassoo for lasso is a mystery, too. Rodeo Drive still retains its original pronunciation.) In a single generation, English changed dramatically. I suppose it was because of the upheaval of the war, but I don't know exactly why.
