Art School Live with Eric Rhoads

A brilliant artist with much to teach, don’t miss today’s video segment with Charlie Hunter. Charlie will be the first to tell you that he’s not making paintings, he’s telling stories. These stories come in the form of murky-brown, drippy portraits of decaying American infrastructure. He’s telling the tales of what nature does to the things man creates.
A gift from Streamline Publishing, publishers of Fine Art Connoisseur and Plein Air Magazines, and newsletters Fine Art Today, Plein Air Today, Realism Today and American Watercolor.

This man has me so inspired! This has whetted my appetite to get outside and start telling some stories! I've never felt such a desire to paint in a certain style before and look forward to how I can loosen up and come to create something similar to this style of painting. The way that this man uses unconventional tools totally intrigues me, too. I'm heading out to my yard to start sketching and telling stories! With my cup of coffee, too, for sure! Thanks for the inspiration, Charlie!

Thanks to Streamline Video and Charlie Hunter for the lesson. I am so impressed how he painted this exquisite painting while standing off to the side of it (to give us a better view)...and, of course, how he talked about every step he took. First rate instruction.

I enjoyed this. I like his approach. Some people take their hobbies way to seriously. I've been out with some groups that looked down on anyone that didn't have the best/top of the line equipment. Or showed up with so much kit, you wonderd how they managed to get anything done. I realize for Charlie it's not a hobby, it's what he does. But he still doesn't get all caught up in the trappings of what you can & cannot do. He just does what feels right. I've taught many beginner art classes, and Charlie stresses one thing I always did too - taking the time to step back and look at your work from a distance. You really can't see it properly when you're face is only inches away from it. I would go plain air painting with Charlie anytime. L

I spent 1 dollar on a squeegee! Actually, I also bought the one he recommends, and was surprised at how cheap it was, about 16 dollars for a lifetime tool. But the problem is, he is working a 1'x2' canvas, my small PA canvas in 4x8, and my large is 6x12, also 8x8 and 12x12, which makes good use of panel carriers. So a 6 inch squeegee is too big. I bought an 8 inch shower squeegee from the dollar store, and cut it down to 3 inches. It may yet have to be reduced to 2 inches.

Not a very uplifting start: "Painting is hard" "I think about the same things--am I doing it right?" "Being a creative is daring to fail." I hardly consider that "rule breaking." That sounds anxious.

Jenna he is just being honest about the challenges of representational painting. He knows how daunting it is for people to paint outside. If you watch the entire video you'll see how devoted he is to practice. and he is very encouraging.
