Been saying that for years. If a union is truly worth being a part of then their members would voluntarily pay their dues because they feel it’s worth the membership. By forcing due to be directly deducted from your paycheck, the union has no duty to actually care about member satisfaction.

The dept of education in DC should be abolished and control of the state school systems should go to the states... The teachers union should be disbanded and replaced by a state by state organizations that cover contracts for each state. There should never be people in charge of these organizations that earn more than the teachers themselves....

TAs have all have at least 6 years of study under their belt and are given a specific curriculum to follow. It is not as if they are up there free wheeling. Freshman year studies are very basic in the chosen field and there are basic knowledge that needs to be presented in order for any student to move forward. Perhaps Kirk should actually sit in on a class for a semester before passing judgment? Or discuss this issue with a TA and their advisors?

Not all teachers are bad, but Charlie is right that we need to be able to fire the bad ones. Another issue happening throughout education is the good teachers are leaving the profession which means schools are left with even more bad teachers. One huge problem in education is education programs. A high school math teacher takes more education classes than math classes (my engineering major daughter substitute taught during her breaks and had more math classes than math teachers were required to have). Schools should have more pathways for people who have real life work experience and college degrees to become educators. Some of my kids’ best teachers were math/science teachers who did not have education degrees. Her favorite teacher had an engineering degree and retired from the marine corps to become a middle school math teacher.

I agree with everything you said, but I do not think this conversation can occur in a vacuum. This is especially true in urban and/or underserved school districts.
@kimdaniel2601
@kimdaniel2601 24 күн бұрын
@@Tes7000 I don’t disagree at all with this. I think it’s one reason so many teachers are leaving the profession. Schools currently have very little accountability both for teachers and students. I’ve seen students tell me they aren’t going to complete work because they will be promoted to the next grade anyway. Teachers are undermined when students understand the social promotion game. Then there are administrators who do not support the teachers and often undermine them to appease parents. The current system is a mess and I’m not sure it can be repaired with a little money or a few policy changes. That’s like putting a bandaid on a bleeding artery. It needs to be broken and rebuilt from scratch.

Agree! The only possible point with which I might need to differ is that ‘blow off’ teachers don’t always teach gym. Gym is hugely underrated in this day and age of an obesity epidemic - so in this parent’s opinion gym teachers (and Physical Ed classes) are as important as ‘stem’ classes since it should address physical fitness and general well-being. If someone is educated to the point of becoming a rocket scientist but they die from diabetes by the age of 30 I suspect the lack of physical education would be a huge regret regardless of any other academic accomplishments.

In (Community) College, I had two Electronics instructors with WIDELY DIFFERENT backgrounds. One had REAL WORLD ** WORK ** EXPERIENCE and I learned a lot of REAL WORLD ** WORK-BASED ** instruction. IOW, I learned how to "dig into" hardware via schematics and using test equipment to troubleshoot/repair stuff. The other was a "book-smart" ENGINEER who, as near as I could tell, had VERY LITTLE "real-world work experience". However, I learned valuable "theoretical, etc." information (i.e., Math) that helps me in designing/prototyping circuits prior to building them. Both were "Good" instructors, well-educated and experienced in their "fields", and I used what they gave me to become employed and continue my employment for 44 (Forty-Four!) consecutive years at the same company and, as a "by-product", TEACHING/TRAINING "newbies" the 44 years of accumulated skills/knowledge/experience that I have.

I teach my students to think logically and question everything they hear, including what I teach them. I push my students to go beyond what they think is possible and show them how to achieve it. My expectations are always high. I don’t accept second rate effort. My classes focus on the material and not how we feel about it. I despise the lie of DEI and every lie for that matter. While I may be a dinosaur or perhaps even the exception to the rule, don’t paint all of us teachers with the same brush. By the way, in my spare time, I fix plumbing, write novels, and am growing my own business. So, some of us can do as well as simply teach.

I live just outside Atlanta, and my mother and stepfather were a teacher and counselor, respectively for Atlanta Public Schools. I think many teachers today are being scapegoated by schools with weak campus discipline and extensive social promotion practices. This is especially true in urban and/or underserved school districts. I am absolutely not saying that bad teachers do not exist, but I don't think there are that many of them, or that they are a major factor in educational outcomes in this country. Just a few decades ago, students were expected to actually put in the effort to learn what was being taught in a class. Blaming a teacher for not conceding to student's laziness wasn't a thing. If anything, the smartphone era has proven that students have the ability to find and learn just about anything when they have the desire. Thoughts?

He defined a terrible system in which it is hard to fire said "bad" teacher but he never gave the definition of a "bad" teacher only that they need to be fired. There are always going to be failures but depending on the subject there should be a pretty high pass rate.

It is very upsetting to hear people degrade others no matter what their field of employment is…the most difficult part is these individuals call themselves Christian’s😢. If people had the decency to pray for others and remember they are still human and hold zero superpowers “other than school personnel returns year after year to an unappreciated and disrespected position”. Teachers initially go to college to make a difference in the lives of children, but throughout the years they learn few and fewer people even care about the school system. I laugh because during covid when parents were teaching their own kids…they demonstrated a sense of respect for educators even tho they were only dealing with their own child “including myself lol“ and not 25+ other children all with a variety of basic needs not being met beyond academics.
