I was in the nursing field my whole life and I emptied the garbages at our office... I did all kinds of things.... I even cleaned the colonoscopy machines for the medical assistance and stuff... One of them came up to me one day and said why do you do that for us and I said why not why not help somebody...It didn't bother me... I never thought above anybody...I never was above no one... Self-esteem comes from what I think of myself. Not what I think that you think of me. If I do good, and do service as Charlie put it, then I’ll have good self-esteem. If I hang around losers, self-centered people, self-absorbed people, then my self-esteem will be on the low end of mediocrity or less, and nothing more.

Depression is a thing, no denying that. But how can an entire generation feel depressed, oppressed, suppressed etc. Do one thing a day that value adds to another persons life or society in general and put yourself second for a change. It can do amazing things.

I think love is a good thing unlike obsession. To me self love means I accept myself for who I am, I wan’t to take care of my body, mind and spirit so I can help others. What Charlie is talking about is self obession which probably leads to a sense of entitlement and narcissistic behaviour such as the “you can do and have everything” movement. Differentiating these terms is important, because good concepts like love get hijacked to show aggrandisment while its original meaning which includes goodness, kindness and patience among other virtues starts to disappear. It’s like patriotism vs nationalism. One is love, one is sickness.

I really like this speech, but I don't agree with his last sentence. Why would self esteem contradict self-control, why shouldn't we strive for both? I believe both are important treats and can go hand in hand. Also, high self control without self esteem sounds like a recipe for anxiety and neurosis. English is not my first language so maybe I'm missing a nuance, but I really don't see a reason to put those two as potentially opposite values - I say both are important and can be achieved simultaneously. I wish someone had told me all this when I was in my early twenties. I met a girl in college who was the most amazing person, without a doubt the one, and I treated her like crap because I was selfish and only cared about myself and was terrified of commitment. Now she’s gone and I can never recapture those unique five years we had together at that seminal point in our lives. We could have traveled the world by now and even had kids.

This is good to an extent and the part about priorities is sound. Its good to give, but you are not being giving in the other things you say. Instead, you avoid people's plights when it comes to depression. YOU have to give FIRST by actually acknowledging their sadness and caring about what they go through. This is you showing love and giving first, which then teaches them how to love and give in turn. Just ignoring their issue by avoiding it and saying they have to start giving is actually making the problem worse. You're jumping ahead.
