Capitalists are competitive not envious. (Yes, there is a difference there.) Competitive societies are more informed and less ignorant. The most miserable societies are are communist/socialist societies, and they have the receipts to prove it. Moa Zedong's Chine, 50,000,000 - 100,000,000 people killed. Stalin's Russia, 20,000,000 - 50,000,000 people killed. Venezuela, Cuba North Korea are still a modern day example for a continuing head count of socialist misery. That young man was conflating socialism with social responsibility and I'm afraid Charlie didn't pick up on that. Being socially responsible isn't socialism. The free market needs its society and environment to be secure by ensuring that workers can get to work safely and that businesses can run both profitably and efficiently whilst maintaining the safety of their employees. Those are all key elements to a successful society that is both high trust and compassionate.

Small Quibble: Socialism is usually built on Jealousy, not Envy. Envy is the feeling of "Why can't I ALSO have what they have?", while Jealousy is the feeling of "Why can't I take away what they have for myself?" Jealousy is zero-sum (i.e. for me to win, someone else has to lose), while Envy is not. Despite what they claim, Socialists don't want everyone to prosper, they want to steal form the prosperous to take for themselves. Which fits with the tenets of their ideology, since one of the cornerstones of Socialist and Communist thought is the very zero-sum idea that if someone has Capital, then they MUST have exploited others for it. That someone else MUST have lost in order for the Capitalist to win. Nevermind that reality is basically never a zero-sum game.

What logic did you use to come to the conclusion "Socialism is usually built on Jealousy, not Envy"? To suggest the masses, who're the one's uprising against the government, causing the political shift, aren't a mixed-bag, "usually" with the intent to "have what they have," makes absolutely no sense. Also, why did you usurp these definitions in order to fit them in your narrative? In this context, envy isn't the feeling of "Why can't I ALSO have what they have," it's, "why can't everyone have what they have." Jealousy isn't, "Why can't I take away what they have for myself." Jealousy is the fear of losing something valuable to a perceived threat. It's about protecting what you already have from being taken away. For example, feeling jealous when your partner spends time with someone else because you fear losing their affection. Therefore, jealous people will attempt to stop the envious from creating a socialist country.

@sean2015 I'm so confused. Why do these brats think this way and act like this? I'm 46. When we were in college, we drank and partied and never ever discussed this stuff or protested nonsense. It boggles my mind. Besides girls and music, maybe we'd talk about aliens and stars and stuff when baked out of our minds. Guess it proves how much has changed with education mixed with smartphone brain and echo chambers. I'd also add that Gen X and so on have become very lazy and made enormous mistakes raising kids. I have a daughter and she is aware of so much politically correct nonsense that she will be one of the ones like Kirk and Candace. She won't even walk in the pride themed crosswalk in my town. She's 10. Hahaha Proud Dad!

The student asks a valid question: Where does socialism begin and free-market capitalism end? But I think he doesn’t understand the context of the discussion because he doesn’t know what’s been going on in the real world over the last century. Government has gotten much bigger and more intrusive to the point that individual freedom has been significantly affected, and trends suggest that this will continue towards socialism if not checked. I suppose it becomes socialism when the government becomes more powerful than the people that it’s supposed to serve.

A little bit of taxes is a good thing. It does fund our police force, firefighters, schools, roads etc...high taxation is always bad, high inflation is always bad. That's common sense. The problem is our taxes are being used to line the pockets of politicians or being sent overseas instead of being spent here. That's when it becomes a problem. It just like a small government is a good thing, a large government can be a bad thing. You dont want the government involved in every little thing.

Socialism isn't just confiscation of private property. It's when the government runs the economy, like deciding for the people that the vehicles will now be electric. The government decides which industries flourish, not the free market. And they use tax payer money to fund them.

Sorry, that is not the definition of socialism. Socialism is where the state runs all means of production, and private property is abolished, but personal property is allowed, like clothes. They ate both talking out of their mouths. Local PROPERTY taxes are used for police, fire dept etc. Property tax is a fee people pay to have their property protected. That's not what income taxes are or used for. Income tax is mere tax on you just working, surviving. Totally different.

The nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway) are all very wealthy and built on socialism. People live good lives and enjoy a high standard of living, just saying.

We finance 100% of Finland's military budget. It is an extremely wealthy country. Their income tax rate is around 60%. A Honda Accord costs around $50k there. Nothing is really free. Our system-though obviously not perfect- is the best one in the world. There is no other country on earth that literally tens of millions of people try to enter every year.

I love you Charlie, but you lost this debate. The 10% Charlie, talks about is theft. Charlie, please spend more time researching the history of taxes. You lost this debate by a hugh margin of 10%. Charlie, needs to work on his tax stance. There should not be taxes only user fees. Where SHOULD the Federal Government get its money for the military? Through import tarriffs. Who pays to protect the border the people that cross the border need to be charged a fee to cross.
