This in-depth interview with Charlie Watts took place on July 14, 1994, in the cafeteria of the Crescent School in Toronto, where the Rolling Stones were rehearsing for their "Voodoo Lounge" tour. Charlie began by speaking about his favorite jazz ensembles and jazz drummers, and then we moved on to discussing his work with the Rolling Stones, his thoughts about John Bonham and Ginger Baker, and other subjects. A transcription of this conversation is available in my "Talking Guitar" Substack magazine: jasobrecht.substack.com/p/cha...
This Charlie Watts interview, along with the interviews I did during the same week with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Darryl Jones, and Chuck Leavell, originally appeared in "The Rolling Stones: Inside the Voodoo Lounge," a one-shot magazine sold at venues and newsstands during the Rolling Stones’ 1994-1995 World Tour. The Ronnie Wood interview can be heard here: • Ronnie Wood on the Rol... . Look for the others to be posted in the coming weeks.
I hope you enjoy this conversation!
Thanks to engineer/producer Nik Hunt for filming the intro and enhancing the sound of the 30-year-old master tape. The greats always seem to say the same thing, be a great Drummer, not a rock drummer but a great drummer. Charlie always played to the song, he could have played in a way that might have been more to the tastes of what he gravitated towards but it mught not have been a great style for the stones... What an overlooked genius player. Fantastic interview!!! Still hard to believe he's gone.
