I remember walking to the bar I worked at (had parked my sister's car there for higher ground). Then walked over to Hwy 288 and the water was damned near to the bridge. Looking back that was one of those events when Third Ward really became home to me (being from Minneapolis).

Gulf coast third ward Tx folks are built different. come hell or high water mind set, we see this everytime a hurricane comes, all the bs is put aside and it’s survival and rebuild and helping everyone mode. Yes Dallas is very more western, Houston is SETX, so we have more of a typical southern culture than any other part of Texas but that’s cause we got a lot of folks from Louisiana and the Deep South that call SETX home. SETX we speak and sound very southern. Go to Austin and west Texas Dallas and it’s just a drawl they sound like the Texan man on the simpsons which is more drawl vs accent. But honestly Texas is made up of so many different drawls specific to each region. Hill country Austin folks only way u can tell they are Texans is when they start using Tx lingo. Hill country has the best bbq, Houston has good bbq but better southern food, food in Houston one of a kind typical Tex mex mixed with food native 2 Louisiana and of course typical southern dishes it’s one of a kind dining!!

I remember going to a street race in the 3rd ward in the early 90's with a group of friends from the west side. HPD busted it up of course after a couple of runs. The wild thing to me was they do not get out of their vehicles at all, which is not the typical protocol they do in breaking up street races in our side of town. They just put on loud speaker and made announcements until the crowd dispersed. They put their light beam on our group since we were the only white people there....the cops said to us "what are ya'll doing out here? You shouldn't be out here"....they were shocked some white kids were in that part of town I guess, especially blonde white girls. lol Nobody gave us a hard time though, people were nice to us since we had the bikes to race for pink slips and knew some guys who were from there who raced also. I also had to do a lifeguard course/training at McGregor Park as a teen. Same thing, nobody gave us a hard time, people seemed to just stick to their business.

This was different than almost most Central Americans who went to Gulfton/Alief in the 80s. My pops loved 5th Ward. He was a dark skin Salvadoran and said he never got hated on by the black people who taught him English. But the Mexicans on Northside always threw shade at him. The Nickel will always be in mye heart. Crazy we even lived there right dab in the craziest era of Houston.

You've got so many places to film in Houston. Northwest Houston (Greenspoint aka Gunspoint, Acres Homes, Carverdale), Northeast Houston (Northwood Manor, Homestead, Lakewood), Southwest Houston (Alief, Gulfton), and South Houston (Third Ward, Sunnyside, Southpark). Southeast side is mostly Mexican and has some legit hoods too. The area west of downtown is really nice and the only part of Houston that doesn't have any poor areas/hoods.
