She has already proven that she can push buttons, but she no longer attracts attention, and yes this is a bit grotesque. Exciting? I’m always profoundly awed when Madonna goes religious, spiritual with Like A Prayer. Here with the staging and choreography she goes surrealistic art with the messaging of LAP. The Christian Latin crosses (symbol of redemption) on the rotating stage (the world) and the masked dancers (mankind) doing contortions (lost, struggling in this imperfect life), Madonna in a monk’s robe portraying a prophetic messenger of the gospel of redemption with her leading the dancers reaching out for salvation. Mixing the intro with strains from Act of Contrition is just brilliant-evoking in Christian theology the need for repentance as a requisite for redemption and ultimately for salvation.

It was an unflattering portrayal of Jesus and excluded His divinity by not covering His Resurrection. By strict Christian orthodoxy, this would be condemned as “blasphemous” and “sacrilegious”, same accusations leveled on Madonna. Yet it’s my favorite rock opera for humanizing Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene and others, by asking modern day questions, doubts about this Biblical narrative. I felt the patriarchal/male dominated hierarchy of the church and the rigidity of their dogma had historically marginalized the role of women, resulting in harsher condemnation when women like Madonna dare to challenge their authority and prejudice through her art. Add to that the conservative, prejudiced segment of society/establishment that will not tolerate such daring from a female artist like Madonna.
