Late to the party, but thanks for making a quick and dirty start-up tutorial. I think there needs to be more of these kinds of tutorials for other aircraft too. Because this is a sim, and not RL, I prefer to first learn what I NEED to know then I can later learn what I want to know/stuff that would only be needed IRL. It makes the learning curve of these modules much less overwhelming, IMO.

Just got this plane during the last sale, and ever since my life has been a Saab Story... Yeah, I'm a dad. Getting started on these tutorials, so thanks in advance!

I believe there is a dangerous caveat to your 'raise-the-landing-gear-in-advance'-trick at 4:49 though: When the weight goes of the wheels, and the gear instantly retracts, it ALSO raises the flaps on the forward canards, making you lose quite a chunk of lift again. That might be risky when you're heavy loaded: you think you've taken off nicely, until your nose drops back to the runway. Owyeah, didn't you forget to turn on your oxygen? (right wall console, the lone switch under the three dials). Hypoxia ìs a thing, y'know? ;)

So yes I forgot to turn on the O2 - which DCS doesn't punish you for not running, still you should do so! As far as the landing gear - my understanding is that is actually in the manual for the Viggen that you run the lever prior to takeoff. After all - the gear will be damaged once you build too much speed, and the canard flaps are not exactly required for takeoff given the thrust and delta wing. I could see doing a milpower take off the flaps being more of an issue but the Swedes always did burner take offs even at civilian airports they shared runways with. Thanks for the comment (and sorry for the delay in reply)

@@Leadnap No probs :) Indeed DCS is quite forgiving with hypoxia: the vision goes blurry and monochrome, but neither we nor the ingame-pilot get a woozy-head and have brain.exe slowing down... And an AJS-viggen mostly flies low-level anyways. :p

You did not rotate the computer knob from ref/lola to akt/pos. Thought this was needed to get nav computer data to display properly? Not sure if it is modelled in DCS but it is recommended that you do not switch to Nav until holding short of takeoff. Some sort of quirk in the nav computer where it becomes confused if the aircraft is not moving at normal speeds for an extended time. Your information about raising the landing gear early is correct. One drawback though is that when the landing gear raises the flaps are stowed. So if you have the landing gear raised before takeoff and you rotate too early during the takeoff roll you could find yourself in a semi-stall and the flaps retracting at the same time. Probably more of a danger with maximum loads. You will need the oxygen switch on if you intend to fly at altitude, although low level is the Viggen's natural domain :)

It's crazy that they go into so much detail. I read just the other day that Garmin was building an autopilot that will land a small plane. I know commercial jets have advanced autopilots. How much longer before aircraft are completely run by computers?
@countvonaltibar2363 жыл бұрын
have a look at the A320 designed many years ago and it's all about computers, just reboot by pulling a CB and it usually fixes a fault

Wow this simulation game looks so complicated. Can we actually learn how to fly a real plane with this ?! (or at least start it x)
@Leadnap4 жыл бұрын
DCS is a "Study" Sim - so essentially yes, everything is modeled on the real versions of the aircraft.

@@mitsumichi5325 In the dutch airplane museum 'Aviodrome' they actually have a viggen among their collection. A few days per year, they let you sit in the cockpits. Last year i went there, hopped in, and it looks amazingly similar! I instantly recognised the vast majority of the switches and panels. I've posted some of the pictures i made on the ED-forums here: forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?s=53ebd63165495e7baa2234e9c9805e74&p=3938420&postcount=23

does the viggen not have an uxy/obogs switch?
@Leadnap3 жыл бұрын
The oxygen switch is located just above the CK37 data entry panel, its small leaver directly left of the number display. When this was created the O2 was not simulated in DCS so it wasn't required to turn on.

Pile of junk. Not enough fuel to even make it to Hur L3. Seems to be a pretty simple startup procedure for such an old jet though. Faster startup than the newer F14 thanks to data cartridge instead of damn INS computer.
