Charlotte Brontë (bronti/bronte) 21 April 1816 - 31 March 1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who survived into adulthood and whose novels have become classics of English literature. She first published her works (including her best known novel, Jane Eyre) under the pen name Currer Bell.

In Patrick Brontë's study
It was in this room that Patrick Brontë first discovered that his eldest daughter was a successful author. In a letter of August 1850, Elizabeth Gaskell recounts how when Charlotte, carrying a copy of Jane Eyre and some reviews, marched into her father's study, the following exchange took place:
'"Papa, I've been writing a book." "Have you, my dear?" and he went on reading. "But Papa I want you to look at it." "I can't be troubled to read MS." "But it is printed." "I hope you have not been involving yourself in any such silly expense." "I think I shall gain some money by it. May I read you some reviews?"'
Later that day he announced: '"Children, Charlotte has been writing a book - and I think it is a better one than I expected."' Mr Brontë was always very proud of his children's achievements, attributing their ability in part to his own eccentricity.

What a wonderful video on Charlotte Bronte. Pictures showing the inside of her home , even the family's beds and bedrooms, transport us into her times. I did a disertation on Jane Eyre in my post graduation in 1974 . And in a debate on 19th century women novelists I spoke on Charlotte which earned me an A grade from my University of Punjab, Chandigarh,India. I am so thankful to Rebecca for this very informative video , useful to students of English Literature around the world. Rebecca ' s videos on British History are an encyclopaedia of knowledge. Thanks for this one also.

The photograph of the three women together is not accepted by the Bronte Society. The sepia one of Charlotte WAS accepted for a time, but is now known to be a photograph of her friend Ellen Nussey. Images of the Brontes are a minefield. The reliable images are those created by Charlotte of Anne, and the paintings of his sisters by Branwell. The only confirmed photographs of the immediate family are those of Patrick, the father.

My guess is all three sisters had contracted TB at that school, it can go very slowly until it goes into overdrive and kills the patient.
