I swear I have tried to like other dressage riders, but Charlotte is and will always be my favourite. The fact that she rides to HER standards and not the FEI judges ones is amazing to me. She has so much respect and love for her horses. Charlotte is the kind of rider who will fly all the way to America to buy a horse that no one else wants, and will make it the best horse in the world. I admire her so much for that, that and the fact that she is one of the only Grand Prix riders to ask for a real collection from her horses. And look at Gio, he really enjoys his work ! Bless them.

@livingandthriving
@livingandthriving 2 жыл бұрын
At that level, yeah, you don't usually see horses smaller than that. I don't know if it's because smaller horses aren't physically capable of doing some of the required movements or the riders just tend to gravitate toward bigger, more imposing horses (maybe a bit of both).
@claudia273

It’s actually quite funny you said this. Gio is considered tiny, since European woman have a average height of more than 165. (Men +10cm) The ideal height (esthethically) of a horse is actually your own height. A lot of horses are German or Dutch bred, where the average height is even more.. so yes, Gio is tiny. Tiny heightwise but also in build.

16hh is small for a warmblood. They're typically 16.2-17.2, and whilst it's only 2 inches, I can assure you it's a big difference between a 15.2 horse and a 16hh horse 😂 Gio is beautiful but too big for my midget legs, and his price tag is more than my entire body or organs is worth 😂

The fact that prominent characters in the dressage world, including these commentators, believe Gio is diminutive shows just how out of touch they are with the dressage world & horse world. These beliefs are the false filters that keep a specific group of people & horses at the top. And prevents or delays breakthrough groups in the modern sport of dressage. Gio is not a small horse. His height is average. Don't believe the hype.
@auroraborealis6009
@auroraborealis6009 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Also, longer limbs mean longer tendons and ligaments, which are proportionally weaker than those on 14hh horses. For example, gymnasts and figure skaters are small and quick. They are very strong for their size. A basketball player puts a foot wrong and breaks or tears something.
@Kat-mu8wq
@Kat-mu8wq 4 ай бұрын
Gio is a KWPN, they're typically over 16.2 with no upper height limit but geldings must be at least 15.2 and stallions 15.3 which in the breeding group would make them small kwpn's. So the fact he's only 16 he is small for his breed. Majority of others of his breed doing high level eventing are 16.2-17.2

@kellycarter4944
@kellycarter4944 2 жыл бұрын
Particularily in the extended trot and the tempi's. The extended trot looks downhill and rushed. In the tempi's the horse often jumps more together behind, not taking a full stride. The neck is also ridden shorter than I would like to see. The passage and piaffe are better than average, but still weak with rhythm irregularities. This may improve with time and strength.
@kellycarter4944
@kellycarter4944 2 жыл бұрын
I get that, and I don't know his previous training history, but it does not change the fact there is significant tension in this performance. The problem now being is politics in the dressage ring. This test should not have scored an 89%, but because of politics Charlotte can get the scores even with these errors. I don't blame Charlotte, but I am disappointed. Yes Gio is only 10, yes much of this can be corrected with strength and time, but when you consider the extended trot is introduced at Level 2, and this is now GP, and correcting tension issues is a foundation of dressage and not something that should be excused away, this was a very disappointing performance.
@kellycarter4944
@kellycarter4944 2 жыл бұрын
Part of my disappointment is because it is Charlotte. With Valegro there was a commitment to training excellence. Much superior to what we have seen in many international riders for many years. Valegro was also a very hot explosive horse, so clearly Charlotte knows how to address those issues. But since London and Valegro's retirement, I have not seen the same training quality coming from Charlotte. It likely has a lot to do with the pressure to stay on top, and the judges will reward her for her name now and not the training, although arguably not many judges can see correct training. It is disappointing because I had hoped the commitment to training would supersede the commitment to staying at the top for Charlotte, but it hasn't. She is still one of the best riders out there, but I am personally disappointed in her performances lately. It is what our industry is, but I had hoped Charlotte would buck the trend.
@kellycarter4944
@kellycarter4944 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, we are all busy and life happens. It still does nor excuse a poor performance or the fact that she was recieving superior scores on a subpar performance, or the disappointing fact she is falling into the same trap as every other international level rider from the last 30years. Part of what was magical about Charlotte and Valegro is she showed the world what quality training and harmony could look like. It was inspiring, and quality riding. Now she looks like everyone else who has a "name", and the quality is suffering. There was nothing inspiring about this ride.

@andreabyrne6527
@andreabyrne6527 2 жыл бұрын
He is salivating around the bit (Horses will do it in and out of bit though because it's not due to the bit by itself). It's generally a good sign as a horse who is stiff and ready to bolt (Stressed) won't salivate the same way a more relaxed focused horse would. Like dry mouth from fear in people is very similar to horses. It also points towards acceptance and contact with the bit not fighting it or working themselves up out of fear or pain.

@@sanmat1099 The salivating alone, is a good sign. The horse isn't frightened or tense with stress. He could still feel frustrated or slightly uncomfy/sore is a separate concern (Sometimes chewing or grinding teeth can manifest pain or anxiety too) but he wouldn't be frothing from exercise if he was having a really bad time of it. Horses can foam at the mouth in and out of arena/paddock work. ;)

Constantly behind the vertical, neck never the highest point, and this horse is great but not ready to go this level. Its typical Modern Dressage, that has nothing to do with Classical Dressage. I can't understand why everyone is freaking out this riding style.

Load of nonsense, "another ginger Valegro"!? I wasn't super impressed to be honest. The trot extension was terrible it was almost as though he forgot to carry himself entirely which ended up rushed and downhill instead, or running as it's called instead of carrying himself behind. A mistake not often seen at these levels to be honest. Also the piaffe was far too stiff, tense and fraught, tempi changes way to fast and rushed.....the whole lacking suppleness and true extension except in the extended canter a bit which was half way to nice. It is very awkward and sad when a horse is sold to the highest bidder as I feel this horse has been. he still had a long way to go for this rider and didn't deserve to be flogged in this unsanctimonious manner after having given so much of his life up to his owner. No doubt this performance will probably be the highlight of his career which is a great pity. It usually is for horses sold in this grotesque manner. We don't sell our beloved dogs like this why on gawds name horses. Unconscionable behaviour. Horses are not inanimate objects. We need to heed this as dressage and other equestrian sports are rapidly becoming in peril of becoming completely blacklisted for being abusive in the minds of the general public.

He's off to another loving home, a young woman coming up in dressage world who is a friend of Charlotte's. Charlotte is the best dressage rider in the world and we can't expect her to keep all the horses that come her way. yes, the dressage world can be grotesque but Charlotte isn't. Charlotte will be training them also.

Before you bash on them again, please keep in mind that Gio has not been doing this level of dressage for that long. He's not going to be perfect and he's certainly no Valegro. However Valegro came from YEARS of practice. Gio has only been with Charlotte for a year or two so of course his movements aren't going to look the best all the time

@@Grushenke89 We've all heard the excuses before. "All the horses that come her way"? This little horse she went truly well out of her way to bring home, it wasn't dropped on her doorstep, BTW no horse ever is. I feel dealing in the very animals that bring you success is disgusting behaviour. How hard they tried to sell Valegro too. It's utterly unconcionable behaviour. These are living breathing sentient creatures beyond monetary value. This is a big problem in Equestrian sport today.

@@equestanton1017 uh, a year or two. If you'll read my comment again, a horse of valegros comment comes from years and years of work. Charlotte has sold Gio anyway, so I'm not entirely sure why you're hating on them. Yes, he's a little stiff and awkward in some of the movements, but as stated, it takes YEARS of practice.

Disgusting, making a horse hold his head in this unnaturally over bent way for some false sense of beauty.

Actually, when they're in that position it's most comfortable. You'll see or notice a horse will go into a contact by himself after hard work and a form of relaxation lol

Horses will carry their heads this way when they are carrying themselves and their riders correctly and working properly through their back.

Huh, I myself am quite naive about horses, but I have seen Valegro lift his head and puff up his chest on his own, without prompting from Charlotte, the moment the music started. I have also seen other horses doing that to show off. Maybe holding for that amount of time to dance requires much training, but it is certainly something horses do on their own.

Actually I know quite a bit about horses as I was a veterinary technician for 26 years, 11 of which I worked at a veterinary college in the large animal department. In order to tube a horse that is colicking, I would bend its head in that same position because it opens up the esophageal opening while closing off the trachea thus helping the tube pass into the stomach and not the lungs. @•Edith_Overhunter•

Does anyone have any information on dressage? Things that could indicate discomfort, things that indicate calmness, dressage bits, Dressage spurs, Clothes, Etc? I do journaling/studies on different disciplines. (I love to study about the different disciplines and everything and write everything down!)
