While many people assume that legendary actor Charlton Heston was as imposing in real life as he was in his iconic movies, the handsome, 6-foot-3 star’s son, Fraser Heston, and his daughter, Holly Heston has recently shed some new light on his father that puts that narrative to bed.
Although Heston was one of the most sought-after leading men in Hollywood during the Golden Age of cinema, he made room in his busy schedule to spend quality time with those who mattered most, his wife Lydia, and his two children.
Not only was Charlton Heston a man with strong moral principles and family values, but he was also quite outspoken in his opposition to social injustices. He was one of just a handful of Hollywood actors who spoke openly against racism. He was also an active supporter of the civil rights movement.
From philanthropy to politics to family time, Charlton Heston, although generally depicted as this almost larger-than-life tough guy character, was a man of strong moral caliber. Join us as we see what Holly and Fraser had to say about their father while taking a look back at his storied life and career. In 1977 I had the great fortune to see Charlton Heston, Debra Kerr and Andrew Prine perform the play, “A Long Day’s Journey Into Night” at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles! What an impressive figure he was live, on stage! He had massive shoulders and a booming voice! I was mesmerized! What a presence he was. I’ve always loved him as Moses in “The Ten Commandments” that I saw as a child on the panoramic screen. But to see him on stage, WOW! I also got to see Yul Brenner perform one of his last performances of “The King And I” at the Pantages Theater! Boy did he know how to “milk” an audience! You could tell, he was having so much fun drawing out his lines for a live audience! What a treat! I had such a good time!

I missed out by a lousy five days’ in seeing him, on stage in London, in ‘The Caine Mutiny’. I, too, would’ve loved to see him on stage. I know what you mean by his ‘massive shoulders’. Plus, I admire him for being a great father to his children. Along with having a great screen presence and acting talent, I praise him for marching with Martin Luther King Jr., Henry Belafonte, and Sidney Poitier for civil rights. When Sophia Lorens' $700,000 worth of jewelry was stolen; then found and turned in by a ten year old boy, she refused to reward the boy, saying that was just his duty. How cheap, devoid of class.

When Charlton Heston was a big actor in the 1960s and 1970s my brother and I had a term for when he took over situations in a powerful manner. It was called Hestening. We would see some other actor doing something powerful in a scene and say, look at that man he's Hestening.

I agree that Heston was one of the great actors of his era. He could take on a variety of roles--such as a cowboy in WILL PENNY, both astronaut and ape in the PLANET OF THE APES series, an actual British officer in KHARTUM, a doomed crusader in SOLENT GREEN, and a number of science fiction and modern roles with the sword and sandal epics went out of style. His memoirs--IN THE ARENA--are a good read, too.

Yes you are absolutly right. And Also, let's not forget the wonderful figure of "Long John Silver", he brought back to life in "Treasure island" Or his great performance in the Westen "Big country", with Jean Simmons and Gregory Peck. Where he and Gregory Peck, had the longest fistfight I have ever seen in a movie. And finally ended up, both so comepletly exhausted that they shook hands and made friends.

Charlton Heston STILL is one of my favorite actors, AND personality. I’m 71 and saw Ben Hur when premiered on the screen in Los Angeles. To this day it is still my top favorite movie. He became my favorite star from that day forward and still is today. His faith was an integral part of his life, so much so that he did a series on The Bible and his reading of scripture was always so moving. I have a prize possession of a photograph of he and our daughter at a political event. She worked for the people running the event. We call it the “Prom” picture because they are facing each other and he is holding her two hands in his. Their smiles say it all and they look so happy. He was gracious and loving Christian man. He ALWAYS showed his faith and did not apologize for it.

I happened to be in a bakery showroom on Ventura Bl. one day in the late 70s when a limo pulled up out front and out came Charlton Heston. He strode in and proceeded to the counter where he took possession of a huge flat cake with an amusement park theme on it, obviously for a small child. He cradled it and walked back to the limo, where the driver opened the rear door for him, He slid in and they drove off. That random sight said tons about what kind of man he was. What an honor it was to observe it up close and personal.

I agree, he gave great dignity and a simple morality to his character. Playing an aging illiterate cowboy in a gritty realistic look at life as a solitary range worker. He put as much if not more into portraying this ordinary man as any hero he played.

She has a strangely shaped mouth. Very narrow mouth, in the vertical sense. The top lip and the bottom lip are very closely spaced. But the mouth itself is very wide, from side to side, I mean. The mouth is not very appealing. I've seen her loads of times on KZfaq, caused I watched Cassandra Crossing dozens of times during the pandemic 3 yrs ago, cause the movie had a pandemic element to it. Her "beauty" is highly overrated.

Charlton Heston was one of my favorite actors. I did not know all of what was shared about him. Your narrative of him makes me even more respectful of him.
