In this video we are talking about why I use the credit cards in both the Chase Trifecta and the Amex Trifecta to earn credit card points and get max value from my spending. These 2 credit card setups have very different benefits and fees with the Chase Trifecta costing $95 per year and the Amex Trifecta costing $945 per year, but all 6 credit cards in these setups give me value in different ways so I think it’s worth it.
The Chase Trifecta consists of the Chase Sapphire Preferred, the Chase Freedom Flex, and the Chase Freedom Unlimited. Out of these credit cards, I use the Sapphire Preferred card for its transfer partners as well as for streaming and minor travel expenses. I use my Freedom Flex card for its rotating 5x categories which typically includes gas, groceries, Amazon, and more. I also use my Freedom Unlimited as a catch all card for miscellaneous purchases where I earn 1.5x points per dollar on everything.
The Amex Trifecta consists of the Amex Platinum Card, the Amex Gold Card, and the Amex Blue Business Plus. Out of these credit cards, I use the Amex Platinum for travel where it gets 5x on flights and prepaid hotels booked through American Express. I use the Amex Gold Card for groceries and dining at restaurants where it gets 4x points per dollar. I also use my Blue Business Plus Card for miscellaneous business purchases from time to time where it gets 2x points on everything.
On top of these credit cards, I also have added cards like the Citi Custom Cash to earn 5x back on gas and the Bilt Mastercard to earn 1x point per dollar on rent. Then I take all of the Chase Ultimate Rewards Points and Bilt credit card points I earn and transfer them for hotel stays with Hyatt, and I take all of the Amex Membership Rewards Points I earn and transfer them for flights.

I mean depends what you're doing if you're chasing welcome offers, and wanting to optimize your grocery than cool. Your set up doesn't, but if you are fine with getting minimum 1.5 on groceries than you're good. Truthfully the best set up for most is probably your set up and throwing in the capital one duo. If you don't care about travel pts than savor only or blue preferred only.

I run a similar setup, except I upgrade the CSP to the CSR and nix the Amex platinum altogether. This lowers the annual fees by $250 relative to your setup, and replaces the annoying restrictions on the Amex platinum credits with a blanket broad $300 travel credit. I don't get access to the Centurion lounges but that doesn't matter as much to me because they don't have Centurion lounges in either of my local airports (BOS and PVD). Meanwhile, in addition to the standard priority pass lounges, I get access to the new Chase Sapphire lounge in Boston and I also get access to priority pass experiences, which is crucial for PVD because there is no lounge there (PP or Centurion), only a bar with a dining credit. I also get better travel multipliers (3x for hotels, rental cars and transit-- all broadly outside of the portal, 10x for Lyft)

My issue with the Platinum is how much you need to “work” to get the benefits to justify the fee. For that matter, I feel the same about rotating categories cards, although typically those cards do not have fees. We’re planning to cancel the Amex cards and go back to Chase, probably the Sapphire Reserve - it’s just easier to get the value back without much work/thought.

Couldn’t agree more. I too was an AMEX fan, primarily for year one SUBs, but as year 2 went, I realized my time was worth WAY more than the value coming from their cards. Time is something you can never get back at any cost. So, I’m back to the Chase trifecta and supplement with the CITI custom cash and my CITI Costco card. Glad to have my life back. 😊

It’s true, but as everything in the credit card game, you do a lot of research and excel sheet tables for weeks, but hardly do any more work after. I also was hesitant with the amex platinum, now I literally think it’s the best credit card ever and get around $1500 of value every year. Just justify the first $700 - however you wanna value the benefits. For example, I value Walmart plus as $100. The first $700 I just first value stuff that is absolutely important for me and I was going to spend it anyways. After, I value the rest of the credits because, for me, now I’m getting free stuff

Yeah I have the BCP for that exact reason. I max the $6k 6% every year and use it for 6% on subscriptions and if the freedom flex gets a grocery category at some point during the year I’ll use that to get chase points. I’d love if the freedom flex got even 2% back on groceries. I’m considering downgrading my BCP and opening an Amex gold since the grocery bonus is up to $25k at 4%.

The conversational style was super enjoyable Daniel. Keep it up! As for these 2 setups, I find myself getting the most value from the Chase setup too. Well, at least the most value for the price. I don't have the Amex Platinum yet but with the way the credits work across all of Amex's cards, they're a bit of a hassle to get value from consistently. Chase is much more straightforward. Hey Daniel. This format becomes you! I like it a lot! Ultimately, people want to hear honest, genuine perspectives from KZfaqrs. You always come across that way, but this format brings your authenticity forward even more. I have both trifectas also, except I have the CSR, not the CSP. And like you, I use the Custom Cash for gas, except in quarters like this one, in which the Freedom Flex has gas as a category. In that case, I’d prefer 5X Ultimate Rewards points to 5X Citi points. Really nice video, as always!

You've got a very similar setup to me with the exception of the CSR vs the CSP. Hey Daniel, great video! You made some good points however, I think the point that needs to be stressed about the portal you mentioned for AMEX is that it actually can be a good deal, especially if that is one of the only ways you have to actually use your points for travel. I live in the Midwest Minnesota, and I don’t fly internationally. However, I do fly domestically fairly often, and I have yet to be able to find any transfer partners on any dates that I am flying in and out of MSP. so the portal is actually become quite a good option for me so I can actually use my points and not have to come out of pocket for it. Anyway, I just bring this up because I’ve noticed a lot of credit card KZfaqrs I have watched just make the natural assumption that you can get an epic deal as long as you transfer over to partners. However, just as in my case that has not been an option thus far! Anyway, I really enjoyed the video. Keep up the great work.

I've been looking at the Capital One Venture X card lately and wondering if you've looked into that one or would make a video on that card. It seems so appealing having a $300 annual travel credit, $100 PreCheck or Global Entry application credit, 10,000 bonus points annually, 10X hotels, and 2X on other purchases. Just seems like way to good of a card to be true that could be used for everything and that pays for itself and then some. Are Capital One rewards points valuable compared to Amex or Chase UR points, maybe that's why it seems like too good if their points don't cover as much as the others do. Thanks and keep up the great educating content!

So idk who’s looking at this now in 2024, however you can business write off the annual fees with a business and you can easily get up to 1200-1400 a year worth of value off the Amex if you’re using everything smartly. Also Uber one is free with capital one savor so I get free delivery and 25 dollars a month on Uber which is about 2 free deserved meals. However Uber runs deals constantly so I can tally stretch the statement money out to 30-35 dollars a month and get about 3 free meals with feee delivery every month. Which is insane value. I’m Not even counting the global, the clear, the other 120 for food at select restaurants, the entertainment which you can split Up and use the Amex blue card as well in that, the Walmart+ membership, etc. I use my points with Amex the BILT card and the chase cards all so that I tax write off my business flights that my point didn’t cover and most of the time I can get about 4-6 trips back and forth to states for free. It’s insane how much min maxing you have to do but it’s well worth it once you set everything up for yourself 🎉

Last time I checked, amex doesn’t rollover the monthly credits for things like the $10 Uber eats or Lyft, which was a con for me cuz not only would I have to force myself to use them every month, but $10 probably won’t even cover the entire price of what I purchase.

Hey Daniel, thank you! I am running with the Chase trifecta identical to yours. What are your thoughts on the Triple AAA daily advantage card? 5% back on groceries, 3% back at Costco, and 3% back at gas stations on up to $10k of spend for the year. Would love to know your thoughts or see a video on this. I’m trying to run with as few cards as possible. Thank you!

thanks for all your videos: Can I ask a quick question that I can't find a direct answer: theoretically speaking, could I transfer points from chase to say British Avios, and then transfer those british avios to qatar avios? I know you said in other videos that Chase can transfer to British Airways and separately British Avios can transfer to Qatar, but I didn't know if there there restrictions on "transferred points" that you HAVE to use them on where-ever you transfer them to or if you are free to transfer those points again. i want to transfer my Chase UR to British Airways, combine with my British airway CC sign up bonus points and then transfer to Qatar Avios to use all those to buy a business class seat with the combined points.

I appreciate the comparison, but I would like to see the initial spend requirements for each. That's the huge hurdle for me. I can do 4-6k in a quarter, but not times 2, and 15k is completely out of the question. So, for me, that's more important than the annual fee. In fact in my own decision making spreadsheet I would have a welcomebonus/initial spend factor to compare apples to apples.

I’m at a crossroads. I have the unlimited and the flex ready for the sapphire but I don’t want an annual fee card just yet. But if I get another card like the Citi custom cash then I will hit the chase 5/24 rule and the sapphire will have to wait years. Should I just complete the trifecta or start saving big bucks with the Citi custom cash card?

Can you do other head to head trifecta videos? If Thanos wiped our chase and amex, how would you rank citi, usbank, and capital one trifectas? I'm not at the point where I can utilize enough amex perks to justify that trifecta, and was looking for a 2nd trifecta to play with next to my chase.

Daniel, Thank you so much for this channel and your advice. Since February, I acquired Chase Freedom Unlimited, Flex, Sapphire Preferred and Ink Unlimited cards and completed the bonuses. I consolidated the points to Sapphire and need help. Should I use the Sapphire exclusively as it has a 10% anniversary bonus? I'm also sure to cancel the Ink, but when and how should I do this?

I have the chase freedom unlimited, amex BCP, and the capital one savor one. The BCP groceries bonus of 6% for $6000 a year = $360 i am able to max out with my partner, and justifies it's 95 annual fee. Savorone fills out some bonuses i wasnt getting 3% on, and the no foreign transaction fee is useful for travel. Flights on the chase freedom unlimited also gets 5% back, and are often cheaper than buying directly from the airline! The only categories i spend significantly on, that i dont get at least 3% on are rent and online shopping. The amex blue cash everyday is what im looking at next, or the Citibank Custom cash, which might become my geocery card if i can downgrade the BC 6:00 P to blue cash everyday

Do the credits of AMEX towards digital or uber etc nigate the spend on the card towards the bonus? So if it is saving you $20, does that remove the amount of spend towards the bonus by the same amount? So you end up having to spend $120 MORE in that six months to cover what they basically gave you back as a credit?

The good news is that for several airline transfer partners (British Airways, Air France Flying Blue, Singapore, etc), they are both Chase and Amex partners - so you can always consolidate points by transferring to programs like those. Amex has a few other really good airline partners that Chase doesn't have and Chase has Hyatt which Amex does not have - but in general I think it's really nice to have flexibility with options across both Chase and Amex. That being said, if spending if very low and not many points are being earned, then the argument could be made to focus on just 1 program between Amex and Chase instead of more than 1 if that makes sense. Lots of ways to approach this and it all depends on each person's spending habits!

So I always thought the chase 2 freedom cards were cash back cards. How does this work, do you receive points or cash back? Sorry if this is a bad question I am 20 and new to credit cards lol
@Daniel_Braun
@Daniel_Braun Жыл бұрын
That's a perfectly normal question because Chase advertises these cards on their website as earning cash back. But really you are earning points that can be converted to cash back where basically 1x points = 1% cash back, 2x points = 2% cash back, etc. But the better value is to combine the points earned with the Freedom cards and move that over to a Sapphire Preferred card which has transfer partners with airlines and hotels!
