A good friend was boarded 5 times between Day Island and Pt Defiance fuel dock and literally strip searched by armed CG personnel. He said they took almost half an hour for each boarding and treated him like a criminal. This is in an 18 footer. A couple of the Coast Guard boats were only a quarter of a mile apart. When he told them that that boat over there just searched me, he was told that they dont care. WE are going to search your boat. When he got home, he put a for sale sign on his boat. He had been on the water his entire life, both father and grand father were tug captains.

Hi Jim, the separation zone separated northbound ship traffic from southbound in a channel. It considered a safety hazard to cruise down it. In the event of a breakdown you could get run over by a large ship. Best to cross straight though it and then cruise outside of it.

It is on all the navigation charts so it’s pretty hard to miss. There is a mid channel caution marker in spots but it’s best to refer to the charts.

Im doing pros cons list of bigger boats bot being to use bouys seems like a small con. never been able to sleep well at anchor , every noise and bump in the night always makes the mind wander. The traffic separation zone separates northbound traffic from southbound traffic. it's mean for larger ships. You don't want to cruise in the zone in the event of a breakdown, or you might get run over by a large container ship.

Cruising in the traffic separation zone. It's a safety issue for smaller boats. Don't want to get run over by a large container ship!

It separates the northbound from the southbound traffic. Boaters should cross it quickly and not cruise straight down it, like we were doing.

the Zone is clearly marked on the nautical charts, and it is considered reserved for vessels restricted to channel depth AKA the Big Boys

COLREGS Rule 10, Traffic Separation Schemes: General rule to stay out of trouble: (c) "A vessel shall, so far as practicable, avoid crossing traffic lanes but if obliged to do so shall cross on a heading as nearly as practicable at right angles to the general direction of flow" What they got pinched on: (e) "A vessel other than a crossing vessel or a vessel joining or leaving a lane shall not normally enter a separation zone or cross a separation line except (i) in cases of emergency to avoid immediate danger or (ii) to engage in fishing within a separation zone." Crossing a TSS crisply is common in the San Juans (and all around the Salish Sea). Running up the separation zone is a no-no.

We are just shy of 20 meters. Actual length is 47 ft.

@@boatingwithbabydoll9513 The Coast Guard has a right to board you for a safety inspection whenever you are in US waters. Failure to comply could cause you some problems.

HI! This boat actually runs on 2 diesel engines. It takes 440 gallons of diesel on a fill up. Diesel runs about 6.00 a gallon. It's not cheap, but because we cruise fairly slow, it can last quite a while on our cruising schedule.

Hi! It's actually called a Separation zone. It's meant to separate the northbound ship traffic from the southbound ship traffic. All recreational boaters should move across it quickly. It's simply a safety measure so you don't get run over by a huge ship. Thanks for your question!

And generally the Coast Guard only has authority in federally navigable waters and no part of the Rio Grande is designated as navigable. There is some nuance to that but that's how it works for the most part.

@@John-tx1wk The coast off San Diego and Brownsville are not the actual border. I realize that’s nitpicking. My point is a CG WPB conducting operations in the Pacific Northwest would be no different than a WPB operating off San Diego or Brownsville.

A separation zone is meant for big ships. You want to stay clear in the event you have a breakdown. Ships have limited maneuverability so you could put yourself in danger if your cruising in the zone. Best to cross straight across and then stay clear of the zone.

Prominent music while not talking but maybe reduce volume to background level for the "talkie" parts. Keep the vids coming. NW born and raised very familiar with the area and waterways.
