The best thing about this, being an artist myself, is seeing the quality of the brushes. :-)

I was thinking the same thing, my mother used to oil paint and she always told me to never get cheap with the cost on supplies especially brushes. She said the quality will always shine through.

The kanji written under the dragon is 守護 in a very nice cursive style, meaning "Protection/Guardianship". The quality and techniques are fantastic, personally I think the gold streak he drew over the dragon to intend clouds or so gets in the way of appreciating the dragon a bit, but it's done well so it doesn't bug me too much

That is soooo crazy, i can't really wrap my head around how insanely cool that was. With one freaking stroke he painted a hole 2 toned body with scales and all (yeah yeah he stopped some, but he never lifted the freaking brush). Soooo good!! Thanx for filming it, love from Sweden!
@KuraSourTakanHour
@KuraSourTakanHour 4 жыл бұрын
It's exactly the point of the technique to not lift the brush, and keep steady, otherwise there will be a break in the body pattern and it will not look natural, just like how you would not lift your pencil half-way through writing the number 1
@LUREDADDY52
@LUREDADDY52 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah yeah he stopped, like for a fraction of a second while he turned the paper. Isn't black paint part of the body?
@recoveringsoul755

A lot of it is in loading the paint onto the brush to get multiple colors, the other part is the start and stop dragging of the brush to make it look like scales. In the late 90's I came across a lady teaching one stroke painting, but it was mostly florals, leaves, petals, that kind of thing.

Thanks for posting! I am just mesmerized by this artist. I've watched a number of videos of him painting dragons. I appreciate that you also showed him loading his brushes. Many of them don't. It's interesting to see how he gets the colors he does.

I had exactly the same emotional journey. Given that this shop is in Nikko, my guess is that this person most likely began apprenticing when they were 12-14 years old and studied with a master and now has the ten thousand plus hours put in that allowed them to become an expert. I’ve found that rule does apply in reality. The thing they don’t tell you about those hours is that the first 8,500 hours are very difficult to get through. The doubts, the self-criticism, the cringe-worthy attempts at greatness. It’s no easy task and becoming free with my art and learning to allow it to be authentic tic is one of the very hardest things I have ever done.

Rebecca Stephens the brush for the scales he used is called a sumi brush
@DraconiInfernalus
@DraconiInfernalus 6 жыл бұрын
Hm, idk but it could be that this is calligraphie paper and the black colour (in the bowl) is classic calligraphie ink that he uses as a base. He put the sumi brush in the bowl for a while. 1st for the moist layer and 2nd it´s wiped off at the bowl.so you got that flattened brush and be able to put the colours on the top...i guess thats all

This looks amazing. With things like this, I always wonder: what were the circumstances, that lead to one developing this technique? In germany, there is a Story about the creation of the Brezel: in medieval times, there was a baker that lost the grace of his Lord, who gave him a task: "bring me a baked good, through which the sun does shine thrice, or you'll be executed" and gave him a Deadline. The baker experimented, until he found a way, the form the Brezel has to this day. But before he could put the dough in the oven, his wife accidentally spilled them into her washing lye. The baker was devastated. He didn't have enough time to make a new Batch, so he put them in the oven and could only pray that they were not completelly ruined. So, he brought them to his Lord, and, to his surprise, his Lord was very pleased. That's how the Brezel came to be. I wonder, if things like this painting technique have similar origins.

The way he makes the twists ruins the continuity of the dragon 😭 it seems like its tying itself in knots and not in a fluid way, lemme explain. the underside appears to be white, and the curl closest to the head its immediately inverted, like that one spot on its body is twisting in a way that snakes can't but a twisted rope makes look easy, and then it happens again on the second curl! I'm curious what effect would have came about had he spun the brush the opposite way. Following from the head into that first curl, second, and even third, where you follow the belly line and where it should meet up on the other side, its so much lower, I had to point it out, its beautiful but I can't unsee the picture in my head of this dragons spine doing a 180 twist at 2 vertebrae to make this possible

And the curl/loops the dragon does is not what im trying to nitpick, its where the body entering the loop/curl doesn't line up with the section doing the loop/curl
