Diggle Junction

Жыл бұрын

Diggle Diaries: An attempt to film all daylight running freight and interesting workings from Diggle Junction. Situated on the picturesque Trans-Pennine, Manchester to Huddersfield and Leeds route, Diggle Jn lies at the top of a steep incline leading into Standedge Tunnel. Providing beautiful scenery, varied freight and trains working hard up the hill, there aren’t many better places for a bit of trainspotting.
This month includes:
- Triple Class 69 convoy
- BLS Technical Cobra railtour with class 50 and 37
- Class 37's on a test train
- NMT HST laser train
- Drax workings, as usual!
- And much more...
Thanks for watching!
Please leave a like, it helps a lot and don’t forget to subscribe for more rail videos.
Dedicated to Alan Gaskell.
Thanks to Ben & Joel for the loco icons, check out the 2023 Train Database here:

For me, one of the delights of Diggle Junction is the absence of all the electrification infrastructure, it reminds me of all the happy hours spent at the lineside in the 1950s. We now live less than a quarter of a mile from the Chiltern line which, happily for me, is also gantry and wire free. Thanks so much for your channel, keep up the good work!

Thanks John, as others have said, sadly that’s going to be coming to an end soon which is certainly going to ruin the view. Hopefully it at least means more varied traffic. Just glad I can bring plenty of trains in the beautiful scenery to people in the meantime.

@@ENC_Trainspotting Hi mate, thanks a lot! I contacted Ben Wright on the RailUK forums for permission to use them from his train database. You should be able to find the link in the video description to find it. They need quite a bit of work to "transparency" them for the vids though.

How shorthand use of initials can mean different things to different people. BLS means something completely different to a Swiss rail fan. Our works had an LMS (light machine shop). Watch out for your cameras autofocus liking moving grass to moving locomotives. Only at night could it be seen the test train also inspects tunnels and over bridges (blue light).

Thanks for the comment Brian, I had to look those abbreviations up, very interesting. I usually catch the autofocus and force focus it but sometimes forget.

Another great video. Thank you! Since I started watching your Diggle videos, I have always been curious (as a trainspotter from 40-50 years ago, "pre-Internet, needless to say) as to how/where you get the "headcode" (e.g. "0Z69") and origin-destination information from? I've not been resident in the uk since the 1980s . . . but actual headcodes from my day seem to have physically disappeared. So . . . . I am guessing one can refer online to timetable/headcode and route information?(?) Is that where it comes from (along with the engine numbers?) If not, how do you ascertain the info? I don't know if I will ever make another trip to the UK at this point, but I have my eye on "The Diggle Hotel" to stay at if I do. Not only does their Sunday Lunch look pretty good, but one of those track-facing rooms has my name on it! :-) And if they keep a good cask ale cellar . . . . . it would definitely by NIRVANA on all fronts! :-) Thanks again! ----Mike (in Eagle Lake, Texas)

Hi Mike, thanks for the comment. You can find all the running information from a few website these days, the main one I use is RealTimeTrains (www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/detailed/). Not all loco numbers are shown so I have to write those down the old fashioned way as it comes by haha. The Diggle Hotel is the best place around for a pint and rag pudding, or maybe a cheese and onion pie if the mood takes you ha 👍🏻 A long long way from Texas. Cheers mate.

@@DiggleJunction Wonderful, I will enjoy looking at that site. But (even though I think of myself as a "foodie" . . . . and a British one, at that), I have NO IDEA what a "Rag Pudding" is. I (even though I am only a hundred and change northeast of you, near Tyneside, as to my boyhood home) have never heard of it before. I will definitely have to look up what it is. Wikipedia: "Rag pudding is a savoury dish consisting of minced meat and onions wrapped in a suet pastry, which is then cooked in a cheesecloth.[1][2][3] Invented in Oldham, the dish is also popular in Bury and Rochdale, and is eaten across the Lancashire area.[4][1] Rag pudding pre-dates ceramic basins and plastic boiling bags in cookery, and so the cotton or muslin rag cloths common in Oldham were used in the dish's preparation during the 19th century.[2][3] Rag pudding is similar in composition and preparation to steak and kidney pudding,[2] and may be purchased from traditional local butcher's shops in Lancashire.[1]" I think I mentioned preciously, my (then) girlfriend, (now) wife, lived in Mossley, and the thing I vividly remember were the miniature steak and kidney steamed puddings sold at the chippie in Mossley. I LOVED THEM when I was 18, and definitely still would (at 65!).

Great video, well done. Just a polite ask; when you change locations could you indicate where we are please. I live locally but not able to recognise some places, like on this edition the location with the level crossing. Thanks. I like the shots of the locos in "the loop"; would be nice to see what it was that caused them to go there! Keep up the good work!!
@CalderTrains
@CalderTrains Жыл бұрын
That location is on the Calder Valley line not the Diggle line, it's Smithy Bridge near Rochdale
@DiggleJunction
@DiggleJunction Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Reid, this is actually something I meant to do for this video but only remembered after it had been rendered. Will make sure to include this going forward. Thanks for watching! The loop isn't used too often so this was a pretty rare spot, it's usually used to get something out of the way for an express behind or for driver training to make sure they know it.

It's used to measure the height of objects above the track, bridges, tunnels, trees, etc. It looks like they're using it a lot here to size everything up for the electrification coming in the next few years.
