Chasing a Pair of UP SD70ACe's - With Auto Start!

I caught this pair of ACe's in Westville on the CN, then heard that they would have to stop in Valpo for an eastbound coming off of the single track section through town. I got there just in time to get the auto start. This engine used its air starter, another innovation on Electro-Motive. He then went to run 8, and EMD's superior traction control system prevented any wheel slip (the second unit was isolated).

I love EMD because it sounds powerful at every noch of throttle include idle. Yeah, and include start up and turn off.

While GE has outsold and outclassed the EMD SD engines, I have always favored the EMD models more than GE, especially the classics. I say this mainly because of the styling. The ACe engines have a clever design.

EMDs cost more because, GE, with their much larger (read: HUUUGE) corporate backing, have better ability to negotiate deals. EMD does not. Also, knowing GE, I would not be surprised if there is questionable financial activities going on behind the scenes, to reduce cost.

From what I know off of experience, if it would have been raining, that scene wouldnt have played out like that. Fairly short train (48 cars) and most of the cars sounded empty except for the autoracks, it wasnt that heavy. Plus im sure the engineer stopped stretched in order to take off like that. I wouldnt say superior traction control, a fairly short and light train made that possible. It sounded real good tho.

I still can't figure out why EMD put air start on these.
@SouthShoreTrain

belzelga2 Well, why not? You've got pleanty of air. It's less strain on the batteries too. I believe they also have electric starters in case the air is bled off.
@SouthShoreTrain

Air is faster and doesn't wear the batteries down. I believe the new units also have electric start in case the air start is not working (like if you run out of air).

Doesn't an engine that size have to warm up for a while, get the oil circulating, before a substantial load is placed on it? For that matter, why do they shut it down for so short a stop? Is this supposed to be one of those "fuel saving" measures?

@SouthShoreTrain
@SouthShoreTrain 7 жыл бұрын
Might be, it is hard to tell. CN has crazy horsepower rules. If the computer says one unit is enough, then only one is allowed to be online.
@pqhkr2002
@pqhkr2002 7 жыл бұрын
The number of units online is controled by computer or engineer?
@SouthShoreTrain
@SouthShoreTrain 7 жыл бұрын
When a consist is made in the railroad's office computer system, the office computers determine how much horsepower is needed for that train. The Engineer's paperwork then tells him how many locomotives he is allowed to have online for that specific train and in some cases how high he is allowed to throttle up. All this is in the name of fuel savings. Some railroads are worse than others with this kind of stuff. The only thing preventing the Engineer from putting more locomotives online is that paperwork, and he will be reprimanded for going against what the forms tell him to do. In my opinion it is ridiculous, but I work for a shortline that doesn't do that crap so it doesn't bother me.
@pqhkr2002
@pqhkr2002 7 жыл бұрын
So it is operated by the engineer, but according to the result calcuated by the computer in the office? I think it is ridiculous, too. It sounds quite annoying. The engineer need to watch what happen around and on the track, locomotive or entire train, and every time they rise the throttle, they need to found out how many throttle they can use on the paper frist ....... What a busy engineer!

Your comment is funny because those are AC units not DC :) You'll find the amps needle only in DC units while AC units have only tractive effort display.
@KC5CQW
@KC5CQW 9 жыл бұрын
goagăl minus Besides, any GE can shut down an EMD. The GE has a much better dynamic braking system. ALL locomotives display amps and voltage, you just have to know the "level 2" maintenance password for the SDIS display (or FIRE on EMD's) :-) and no, I'm not telling!
@irasthewarrior
@irasthewarrior 9 жыл бұрын
KC5CQW I didn't say EMD is better nor GE. I like them both equally. I said that only DC units are equipped with an amp gauge, while AC units have tractive effort on their displays.

can the lead unit atart the secound unit ?
@SouthShoreTrain
@SouthShoreTrain 7 жыл бұрын
Tiger Rule I believe all engines auto start and stop on their own, but if the engineer moves the throttle or reverser, all other locomotives in the consist see that and initiate a startup sequence, just as the lead locomotive does.

I hate the old electric AND the new pneumatic EMD engine starters... They Both SUCK! GE, since the -8, has used the traction alternator as an asynchronous AC starter motor and is FAR superior.
