In this video I share my tips for getting a bass tone like Andy Rourke of The Smiths. Please note that I am not necessarily recommending the exact things I am using in this video. I just wanted to give ballpark ideas for getting the sound, but I included exactly what I am using because people tend to want to know. Any of things I recommend could be changed slightly and would still get you there.

Apparently Andy played a Yamaha BB2000 in studio and played his Fenders on the road. I'm not saying this contradict at all, just for your information in case you didn't know. Its great that Andy gets some of the recognition he deserves.

yes I had read that as well! Makes me want one. I thought about mentioning, but that bass still has the precision pickup in it so I figured it was close enough 🤷‍♂

@@classicbasslines I really appreciated the piece about the plectrums. The thickness is definitely something I overlooked. I was using Dunlops .80 plectrum - it gives nowhere near the attack.

Your 100% correct on the BB2000 in the studio. There's a poster with Andy the the Smiths, he is hold his BB. I was lucky enough to find one in good shape and with a few minor adjustments the tone is there. I only use chorus and a little compression, but use ernie ball rounds. Through garage band it sounds pretty darn close! RIP Andy.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, almost everything up to Meat as Murder would have likely been a P-Bass, I think.

Mr Andy Rourke, you absolute legend, the best quote I heard about Andy Rourke was when someone said that even Andy Rourke didn't know how good Andy Rourke was.though I play lead guitar I've always liked bass guitar. My parents lived just across from Saint John Plessington high school, that's the school Andy Rourke and Johnny Marr attended. Tragic loss R.I.P. Mr Andy Rourke.

Andy realised very early on, that he had to find a way of cutting through Moz and Johnny - no mean feat in itself - but upping the Mid and Top end, along with playing close to the bridge, gave him that tone that cut right through. Also, his basslines hardly ever took the easy route. He really was unique. RIP Andy.

I can only think of 3 bass players that inspired me to play bass... Paul McCartney, Bruce Foxton and Andy Rourke. Not an obvious line up. But they all produce such melodic bass lines. :)

Bruce Foxton's bass sound on The Jam's Going Underground is fab. For cool throaty bass sound, I'd also add JJ Burnel of The Stranglers...e.g. Goodbye Toulouse, No More Heroes.

i quit playing with a pick when I was 15, once I learned how to play "properly" with my fingers. But I've been spending a lot more time with it lately - very fun but definitely takes some getting used to

If your neck is a good one, meaning it can handle LaBella 760M '54 flats or Rotosound 77 Jazz monel flats then it should be fine with 45-105 Rotosound 66 Swing rounds tuned up a step to F# standard.

@@classicbasslines I've had good neck karma. 😬 The technically trickiest thing about playing Barbarism with a pick, being mainly a fingers player with not-so-large hands, is muting the low side F# with the left thumb rather than with the right/plucking hand thumb.
