It's not often we photographers get that chance to chase truly stunning landscape photography conditions because lets face it, they don't come along every day. Well...they certainly came along on this occasion and what a day it was. This is the first of the videos showing a slight change to the format as mentioned in my last video. In this film however the conditions were so good that I didn't get the chance to do any of the small scenes, which I expected to and usually fall back on. This was the point I was trying to make in that when the location has opportunities beyond the close-up and the conditions are optimal, the channel gets to have some more varied material, and it's also good for me to have those experiences. I'm really pleased with this film and I hope you all enjoy it too. My last image is a gift I thought.

Just a comment on the pier and the tree. The image taken from the video (with the pier and the tree branches angled from left to right) was more stunning that the shots you took with the pier extending out into the water at a near perpendicular angle to the shore line. Great images!

Hey Simon. Lovely to see another video from you Buddy. Lovely also, to see you out, taking conventional landscapes which completely compliments. Your more Macro view of the world. Simply awesome to see you being considerate to other photographers out in the field by whispering. This is something that I probably have to get better at a sometimes whilst the way that it can be distracting for others, I am often not as respectful as you are in the field. Well done! Your images are simply awesome, and that last one of the panel of the trees… Simply… Sublime, Symon! That is one beautiful image, and that definitely needs to be printed. You see, you have not lost your touch with the landscape stuff. Nice to catch up on the phone the other night. We will speak soon

Cheers Ewan Typical me whispering 😊. Someone else here asked why I felt the need to whisper. I guess I’m always concerned about what others might think of me. I need to care less sometimes? Thanks for your feedback. The last image was definitely my best work on this film and I’d love to get more like it and got a great deal on f satisfaction from crafting it. I think it needs a tad cropping off the left looking back, but that’s easy enough to fix. The others were ok in my view and certainly worthy of inclusion in the film. We can’t get bangers every time, not with the bigger view at least. The smaller scenes come much easier to me I feel. Yes, thanks for the chat. It was lovely sharing all my personal issues with you 😂

Hey Simon, great shakeup for the film. I really enjoyed watching you chase the light and do more broader landscapes as opposed to your bread and butter intimate scenes. It’s a shame about the pier shot. I actually think your video composition when we first see the scene was closer to what I thought you would shoot. Loved the 16x9 of the larch. Wonderful conditions and excellent day of photography. Cheers!

I agree Nick that point at which I walked into the scene with a dick with a jetty on the tree off to the left. Certainly looked far better but then without me in it it would’ve had a lot of negative space that I’m not sure I would’ve actually worked in this instance.

Some great images Simon - well done!! I agree re the first image with jetty ….. I think the video scene with it coming in from the side was better …. I think when you look straight down a jetty, it needs to be the dominant subject…. Otherwise if it is to complement another subject it needs to be a diagonal element

I regard the B&W of tree and dock as a very good composition. Sometimes the subject isn't what you look at, but what you viscerally sense. There's a small round object on the right that does a lot of work in the composition, and it alone saves the image. It pulls you off the subject. Btw, if you ever do a book ala Tom Heaton, the title should be "Earth Tones".

Simon, Happy New Year! You sure did fall into some perfect conditions. A photographers dream…. Your first shot of the dock with the tree that did not work, I agree it was the wrong angle. But in you “B” roll leading up to it, I thought the composition should have been the tree in front of the dock as the dock was positioned moving from left to right out in to the nothingness. Hello again Simon, thank you for another beautiful video. The conditions were on your side in this video, happy for you. In the first image I agree with you, the tree and the pier would make a better image one by one but they didn't go well together. On the other hand, in the B-roll the composition looked much better from where you placed your video camera. I love every bit of the second image. Those ducks were just at the right place at the right time. I really really like the other images too. Sometimes I feel very jealous because here where I live there are many wild animals around like bears, wolves, boars so I don't feel safe to go to woodland alone. I admire the wildlife but wandering around with no worry would be amazing too :) Anyway, keep up the good work, you inspire me.

I do get a lot of comments about the fact that we are able to wander around the countryside without fear of being eaten, and also the smaller things like bugs, spiders etc, how none of those in the UK can’t do a huge amount of harm to the same degree, as in other parts of the world. I suppose I take it for granted.

Hi Bill, a few people have commented to the same effect and I completely agree with you. When I made the video, I was much happier with where the video camera was sat as I walked into the composition the jetty and the tree seem to come together much better. Regarding your first shot of the oak tree and the pier extending into the fog, I thought the B-roll camera position as you walked into the scene was much better. Although there was a pine tree to the left, from this angle the oak tree was above and framed the pier rather than the two subjects being side-by-side as in the image you did shoot.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 5 ай бұрын
I agree Douglas, but I think from the morning I was keen to get elsewhere and carry on exploring into the woodland and I probably didn’t give this scene the attention it probably could’ve done with. I agree however, the position of the video camera was much nicer by comparison.
@bluemarf1

The way the jetty and tree were framed up on the video camera looked fantastic but in the still image the tree seemed distorted, the wide angle lens?, also there was a small rock or something to the right in the water which upset the balance. The rest of the images were sublime as I have come to expect from you.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 5 ай бұрын
I think with the conditions being the way they were, I was very mindful at the time of spending too much time with this scene and wanting to move on to other parts of the woodland the appeal to me more. I recall being concerned that the fog would move on before I had chance to really make the most of it, which in the end wasn’t the case.

The tree and dock are nice... looks like you even managed to have a small bird land on a branch too... They might be competing... or they might be the juxtaposition of man made and nature supplied 🙂 B/W is best, although I see a hint of blue in you shared file... Good morning, I’ve possibly could have positioned it on that angle in hindsight, but to be fair I think I was in a rush to be in other parts of the area.

Thanks for the excellent video Simon. Re the jetty and the tree image I agree. When I was watching you composing it I was excited to see the final image; however there was a slight sense of disappointment when I saw the image. I wonder why this happens when it is the same scene we were looking at? Cracking images otherwise. Can I just say that I would be more than happy to have photographed even your "cast-offs". Kind regards Robin

Thanks Robin, I think with that first image, it was a case of getting too carried away too easily at the beginning of the day. Sometimes things that appear to be fantastic to the naked eye are often disappointing when they are photographed, I think in the case of this image, it’s because there is no depth to the image, and it’s very very flat and two-dimensional, and with the two elements working against one another it really doesn’t work.

Wow what stunning conditions you had. Regarding the first image, do you think in hindsight it would have been better to include the tree on the left, perhaps to give better balance? Or was it just too distracting / messy? As always, a fabulous video Simon with beautiful images. Thank you.

Hi Barry, that tree on the left was a holly tree. And Hollie trees don’t easily lend themselves to great images when they’re fairly close to the camera and especially not when they are silhouetted. They often end up is just dark areas within the frame. I think if I do move to the right and allow them to come together the shot might have worked better. To be fair, I really wanted to be elsewhere and probably shouldn’t of even bothered with this location without giving it the time it probably deserved

An amazing time in an amazing place. Otter island is one of my favourite images but it was taken before I learned about shooting in RAW, so the processing is limited. I have been back three times and never had anything like the 'good' conditions. Very jealous of you Simon! Thanks for sharing, you swine.

I’d heard of otter island but I had no clue this was it until you said so ☺️

I only know cause it is marked on the OS map. That side of Derwent Water is sublime. Must get back up to the Lakes in 2024.

I think I've watched all your videos and I don't recall one where you came back with so many outstanding images. What great conditions to shoot in! The second image processed at 1:1 is sublime - I should process more of my images like this. And the light on that last one!! My gosh, what a wonderful day to be with you!

I think it just goes to prove why so many photographers. Desperately wish they had fog whenever they go out. It really does make a big difference in terms of simplifying the landscape and making Photography an absolute pleasure.

Stunning shots as usual Simon. Just a question about the camera you used. You recently bought into the Nikon Z system, but I think this time you chose a different system. Every system has good and bad points. So, just wanted to know if the subject matter/ conditions or your available Z lenses were the reason for your choice. Thanks so much for your time and passing on your knowledge in these videos. Take care. Ross (Hiroshima)

Hi Simon... we have fog this morning in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada... an ice fog 🙂

Good morning Dave. Ice and fog are certainly a great recipe for beautiful conditions. I only wish we’d of had those as well. Sadly, we don’t get too much in the way of snowfall and ice in our part of the world, and when it does come, he doesn’t last very long.

About the oak & the jetty: I agree, but when you where walking to it from the right bank, i saw the tree arching over the jetty beautifully. Could there be a great composition from that right side?
