TOKYO, Japan is one of the world’s gastronomic paradises. In this video we’re HUNTING down LOCAL spots and eating where the LOCALS EAT. We visit a 130 year old soba restaurant, eat street food in Ueno at Ameyoko Street Market and check out a burger joint owned by an ex sushi chef where we find rare Japanese food- hot dogs & burgers- Japanese style!. Get ready for some mouthwatering food. Make sure you’re subscribed to our channel goo.gl/9rfeRS so you don’t miss out on heaps more food videos!

Our first stop is Kanda Matsuya- when a restaurant is over 130 years old, you know they must be doing something right. Soba are buckwheat noodles and at Kanda Matsuya they make them fresh (you can watch them being made at the back of the restaurant). The traditional atmosphere of the restaurant is an experience in itself but the soba which are served both hot and cold are a revelation. Nutty and chewy, we eat ours cold, dipping them into tsuyu a soy based dipping sauce.
Next we head to Ueno for some street food, to a popular stall selling deep fried cutlets and beer at Ameyoko Street Market. We eat a high grade beef mince cutlet (menchi katsu)and wash it down with a cold beer.
Our final stop is Delifucious a burger joint in the suburb of Naka Meguro. The name of the restaurant was coined by the chef owner who wanted to combine the words "delicious" and "f*cking" to represent his food. And it's the perfect name- the uniquely Japanese burgers and hotdogs are incredible. The boiled conger tempura dog is melt in your mouth- a combination of thinly sliced cucumber and a filet of buttery conger eel that's battered and deep fried before being drizzled in a sticky, sweet sauce made from eel broth, soy and mirin. The Kobuzime fish burger contains a thick, juicy filet of fish that sits on a bed of slaw which is studded with tsukemono, tart Japanese pickles and slathered in a tofu and kombu (kelp) sauce. Creative, fresh, f*cking delicious food created by a former sushi chef. Well worth seeking out!
Where we ate:
Soba at Kanda Matsuya, 1 Chome-13 Kanda Sudacho, Chiyoda, Tokyo 101-0041, Japan. Open Monday to Friday 11:00am to 8:00pm, Saturday 11:00am to 7:00pm.
Meat cutlet at Niku no Ohyama, 6-13-2 Ueno, Taito-ku, Tokyo 1100005, Japan. Open Monday to Saturday 11:00am to 11:00pm (last order 10:00pm), Sunday 11:00am to 10:00pm (last order 9:00pm).
Burgers and hotdogs at Delifucious, 13 9 1 東山, Meguro, Tokyo 153-0043, Japan. Open 12:00pm to 9:00pm. Closed Wednesday.

Thank you for showing/eating zaru soba the proper way. Not many people(even for some Japanese) know how to eat it properly. First you didn't completely drench the soba noodles(you should only dip about 2/3 into the soba sauce), also you directly applied the wasabi which is the right way to do(not mixing it into the sauce), and finishing the meal with soba-yu is a must. But may I suggest one technique, in the beginning just have one slurp of the noodles without the sauce to taste the delicate flavor of the buckwheat(to enjoy the earthiness). I usually enjoy 100% buckwheat(newly harvested) soba noodles, and I order it mori-soba(without nori) to maximize the earthiness. Thanks for being a soba connoisseur you two!

It's Chasing a Plate catch up time. Sheena, hearing you say "Arigato gozaimasu!" at the beginning and speaking full on Japanese almost brings me to tears, in a good way! I miss Japan like crazy. Ok, soba, my favourite noodle by far, I'm definately going there. Hot dogs and burgers in Tokyo? OMG! I've never had eel before and to be honest not sure if i would try it! No talking with your mouth full Thomas! Top notch video as u say! Keep up the amazing work #chasingaplate

Oh wow! Fun video! Both styles of the noodles looked amazing. The sauce with Thomas's noodles seemed to have an awesome texture. So interesting to see the Japanese take on a burger and hot dog guys but the soba noodle dish wins it for us - they looked like they slid down a treat. What is the beer like in Japan?
@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 6 жыл бұрын
Hi guys! Thanks for watching this one. It was so neat having some of the old and new in this video. The soba where absolute incredible and such a neat experience getting to eat there. We loved it! Japanese beer is great and there are lots of different brands to pick from. The mainstream bands are normally a nice easy to drink lager style. There seems to be a really growing craft beer scene also. We'd love to try more! Thanks for all the support guys! - Thomas 😀😀

Wow!!!! 😍😍.... The food looks amazing especially burger and hot dog..... But being a vegetarian i jst cant grab onto any of the stuff.... Hey, Sheena and Thomas how you both managed to remain on a budget in such an expensive country lyk Japan?? Whats the general level of spice in the food? P. S i am gushing on your nailpaint Sheena.
@ChasingaPlate
@ChasingaPlate 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Nimisha Sharma, thanks so much mate 💅 I am loving the blue too! So glad you enjoyed this video! You could have eaten the soba at the start of the video as both dishes were vegetarian 😄 They were super tasty too! I think Japan gets a bad reputation for being very expensive and it is more expensive than some of the other countries we travel in, in say South East Asia but the thing is, is that you can eat really well for very little as well. Our budget is almost always blown but that's more because of accommodation costs as opposed to food 😝 The cost of travelling in Japan is probably the same as travelling costs in Australia or NZ... The general level of spice in the food is pretty low 😄 Hope you continue to enjoy our Japan series. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena

Hi Dave, thanks so much for the kind words! Thomas and I have been travelling and food hunting together for over 10 years now so it's just been about working out the best way via video to bring our audience along with us. Glad you think the videos are improving! We're all about eating local- where the locals eat and finding the best food in the cities we visit so the food is not necessarily the biggest, the weirdest or extreme because it's expensive- it's just amazing, authentic, local food- places you won't see necessarily see on other channels. Glad you're enjoying the content- hope you like the Indonesia series up next! Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena

I am a genuine Edokko, but I have not eaten the conger eel hot dog. You are eating valuable things that you do not often see even Japanese. The soba is mainstream in Tokyo Edo-Era. Udon is the mainstream in Kansai (Kyoto and Osaka)and west japan.

I have never had soba noodles before mainly because they are cold. Are they really that good? I can't imagine it. It makes us so happy to hear that Brenda! Thank you 😍 like you, I’m more of a hot noodles kind of a gal but the cold soba really are excellent. There’s something about the texture and flavour of them and they’re perfect if you just want a light meal. The burger and hot dog were next level- it was really cool to start the day at a traditional, old restaurant and end with a really modern meal. Hope you like what we have coming up from Tokyo.
