Calon Segur is a 3rd growth wine in the St. Estephe region on the Left Bank of Bordeaux.
Calon Segur has existed since 1147 when it was owned by Monseigneur de Calon (he was a Bishop) Eventually, ownership was transferred to Marquis de Segur, who at one time also owned vineyards which now make up Chateau Lafite and Chateau Latour. He is credited with uttering the words “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.”, which is why there is a heart on the label.
The winery was purchased in 1894 by Georges Gasqueton and Charles Hanappier. The Gasqueton family managed the estate until 2012 when it was sold to a large French Insurance Company, Suravenir Insurance. Jean-Pierre Moueix and the massive negociant company Duclot, took a minority stake in Chateau Calon Segur.
Calon Segur has 55-hectare of vineyards which planted to 53% Cabernet Sauvignon 38% Merlot 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The winery wants to decrease the Merlot and plant more Cabernet Sauvignon. The clay is unique to Calon Segur as it is a mix of blue clay, yellow clay, and dark black clay.
Because the vineyard is situated in the northernmost part of the St. Estephe appellation, Chateau Calon Segur often has the coolest terroirs and is one of the last properties to finish harvesting.
The fermentation takes place in 70 conical-shaped, stainless steel tanks that range in size from 25 hectoliters to 120 hectoliters that allows for parcel-by-parcel vinification. Prior to the new owners taking over the estate in 2012, the wine was aged in up to 50% new, French oak barrels for between 12 to 18 months before bottling. Today, the best vintages are now aged in 90% to 100% new, French oak barrels for up to 20 months
About 20,000 cases of Calon Segur is produced each year. Starting with the 2014 vintage, the wines have taken on a new style. Under the direction of Laurent Dufau, the wines are softer, lusher, riper, more forward, and refined in their approach with a better purity of fruit.

This was the saddest truth about the wines of Bordeaux I have heard. Of all the clarets I have had, Calon Segur 1988 was the most memorable one. That style became a benchmark I used to compare other Bordeaux wines against. And couldn't understand why, with each year, they moved farther and farther from my beloved style. So, the preferences of the majority have shifted, and it seems that the only way back is to seek those older bottles. Thank you. A bitter truth is still better (in the long term) than never-ending hope to finally find something similar.

G.O - I wouldn't be that tragic about things. 2023 is a vintage in the classic Bordeaux style with lower alcohol content. Cheers!

I started my Bordeaux journey in 1985. I bought both the 1989 and 1990 futures of some of the big names Bordeaux wine; first and second growths. I agree with you that the 1989 is underrated. In fact I have enjoyed many of the 1989 wines more that the 1990's. I generally open the old Bordeaux wine around 11AM and tasted it throughout the day. They tend to peak between 6 to 8 hours after opening. I don't really care for the new style wine as much as they seem to lack structure and depth.

Tommy: thank you for your comment and watching my video. I really think I am only now understanding how to drink the 1989 vintage. It was never an overly ripe vintage but it really has some great depth if you give it some time. It is a nice balance between really powerful vintages and what most would consider "off" or greener vintages. Just shows that there are many variations of what is classic Bordeaux and each has its own characteristics. Cheers!

I often notice that people, in a general sense, are too fast with their conclusions/opinion about a wine. Whether it is a younger or older vintage. To develop its deeper layers and young fruit. In the absence of air, the young wine may appear reductive and may not show its young fruit. The wine can be closed or even have a bottle shock, with a lot of impatience. After the purchase of the wine. Here too, taking time is often the key to developing/improving. You can be lucky if a young wine immediately has the balance. Is my personal experience. But young prestigious wines can certainly be unruly in their youth. Time and development whether you like it or not. Difficulty 'taking your time', choose an entry wine. They are made for direct consumption and pleasure. And they are often excellent nowadays, with a bit of luck and knowledge. It is also a learning process to have time and patience in this makeable and fast-paced world. Take that chance, I would say. Yes, and as for the Château Calon-Ségur 1989 it also needs time to present itself! For other reasons than with a young wine, but here too time plays a crucial role. To develop and balance after uncorking the bottle. After all, the wine has been in a closed bottle for many years. No more than understandable that the wine needs time to recover! And we can clearly see that in your patient video. Of course there is an imbalance in the first time, we are dealing with a living product! So be careful with conclusions the first hour. I have had that experience dozens of times. Especially if you are not used to old wines in terms of taste and smell. Inexperienced wine tasters, soon talk about, too old, oxidized, over its top etc. Very understandable, but that is why this is partly a learning process and partly personal and subjective of course. Nevertheless very worthwhile, which is also evident from your interesting video. Recognize this valuable experience of yours. It is great that this Calon-Ségur '89 still scores 95 points after 34 years. It is subjective, but given your experience. Yes!!! And of course this wine deserves a suitable meal. With beef stew, beef tongue, or hare pepper stew etc. Not too pronounced and too sweet, given the age of the wine. Heaven on earth, cheers! By the way, the new vintages of Calon-Ségur have to prove themselves after 10, 20, 30 years! Besides, I also made time for this writing.

Marcus: great points as always. I really like your point that people tend to judge or assess wines too quickly. Even after drinking and doing my review, I am still assessing the wine days after I have had it and going through other wines in my head as to what is similar in terms of taste profile and quality. Cheers!

I wonder if this style of Bordeaux is a "dying art-form" with more and more people preferring fruitier and early drinking wines as well as global warming producing more hot vintages. I'm sure some producers will of course still produce wines like this out of principle and I do hope the new generation of wine drinkers will learn to appreciate them and have the patience to wait or seek out older bottles.

Henri: I think it will be harder to make with global warming and more ripeness. I know that a lot of Bordeaux winemakers are struggle with too good conditions which creates really ripe fruit and very high alcohol content. We will see how the winemakers can restrain nature and make still Bordeaux in style. Cheers!

Hey Tony, are these aged bottles coming from your cellar or do you buy them aged?
@TrophyWineHunter
@TrophyWineHunter 7 ай бұрын
Cory: most of the aged bottles are purchased at auction from HDH. I only started collecting in 1999 so the oldest wines that I have personally purchased are probably 2000 and forward. Cheers!

Rb: not with Calon off the top of my head but in general, I do enjoy 2001 Bordeauax vintage. I think it is in its drinking window and should drink well for another 5-8 years. Cheers!

the reason why older wines were oakier and more herbal is mostly because they had issues ripening grapes and less about the style that was trendy at that time😅

llurispuir: I agree somewhat..that is a style that everyone got used to so that is what everyone liked. Just like today we have really fruit forward wines that, even it could be made that way, most people in the 60s would have thought this is undesirable. Cheers!
