Chateau Hidden Discovery! - Journey to the Château de Colombe, Ep. 57

In this week's episode, Patrick and Stuart make a new discovery about the history of the chateau while clearing off the dead vines from the chateau walls. They also empty out the built-in cupboards in the linen room/butler's pantry, as well as begin preparations in one of the chateau guest bedrooms for Patrick's parents visit for the Christmas holiday.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

Watching you two discuss the “breakage” that wasn’t filmed and the way each of you react to such occurrences evinces how well you know one another and accept and acknowledge visceral reactions one truly can’t control. Y’all could teach couples therapy. The pie’ce de re’sistance was you both laughing about the whole thing genuinely finding joy in how human you both are. God bless and keep you and the pups

What a little treasure trove of goodies you have uncovered in the cupboards. Those oriental blue/red plates appear to be in the Imari pattern and might be either Japanese or Chinese copies. They did share patterns. Just a tip for cleaning those decanters, if you have access to OxiClean powder in France, it is the best cleaner to soak glassware in. I use it for my chandelier crystals and grubby vases for example. They just sparkle without having to use a lot of elbow grease.

If it's one thing I've learned watching all of the chateau restoration channels is that my love for the aesthetic look of ivy on a building actually means there's a good chance a historic building is being damaged right in front of my eyes. And I would much prefer to save the chateau than the ivy lol

I spent decades as a contractor with my husband. My speciality was historical restoration I would have a silent caniption when ivy was covering much of the masonry. Re-pointing bricks And stone is very costly labor wise. Also it keeps too Much moisture up against the exterior walls , that over time causes Interior damage to plaster and window casings. Many people think it is charming, but I am a lover of stone , and brick work. I love landscaping, but far from foundations and walls. I want an expansive view of the architecture. The wow factor ! Lol ...

Wow what an amount of gorgeous plates, glasses etc. This means a lot of brocantes to visit to complete missing parts. I would take pictures of what to look for. Wall without vines is much better.

My Mom, back in Germany, has a similar white and gold China set. You should use that for your “Kaffee Klatsch“ vlog with Stollen, Plätzchen und Lebkuchen. I miss Sunday afternoons in Gemany with freshly baked cake, music and a sense of calm. Life in the US is so fast paced.

A hidden window...how wonderful! I hope it is in the Linen room! What treasures you found in the cupboards! Those roundish decanters remind me of one I got from Kosta Boda about 40 years ago and it holds an entire bottle of wine......hard to believe but see if your decanters do as well! I know all the lovely items will go to great use and enjoy new life being introduced to them! Cheers!

Ohhhhh. I remember a summer holiday with my parents in Sweden. ❤. We went to the Kosta Boda glass factory and atelier….. thank you for the memories. ❤. It was quite a huge gift from the former owners. We will do a decanting segment! Hugs. 💕🥰💕

Yes, great memories! I lived in Norway during the early 80's and saw some beautiful Kosta Boda pieces, collected a few but lost a few in a divorce about 35 years ago. Recently, my son was gifted a Kosta Boda chrystal sailboat from his dad's widow. He sent me a photo and asked "What is this!" I replied, "A treasure!" and then told him the story. Glad it is back in good hands! Cheers!

The China is beautiful. Maybe you can hold country themed pot luck dinners and use the matching dishes from your collection. Having a China room to house all dishes and vases a dream of mine. It will be a very useful room for your growing collection.

How cool to find another potential window, it will be interesting to see if you decide to open it back up. I would love to have a treasure trove of china and glass, it was fun to see all the items you found in the cupboards. Most of it was very nice! They will come in so handy when you have parties and people staying over. You are really getting things done and in such a short period of time. So far everything is great. Thank goodness you had the bed from the US for you Dad to be comfortable. He must be tall like you Patrick. I noticed you had to duck the doors coming in and out. We grow tall people in our family as well. 😉 I purchased a really sweet antique tilting top table for the sitting space in my room. I was so happy to get it because it was simply perfect. Well I went to pick something up beside it and fell on top of it and smashing it to bits. We all have those moments! I cried and then I laughed so I can see both your sides in those situations. I’m happy your mom and dad will have a longer bed. Oh I cannot wait to see the chandelier and large mirror. The entrance hall will be transformed. There are some nice items in the cupboards you cleaned out. Great idea to get rid of the vine that damages the facade. I like the music selections Stuart, since you do the editing. Those round ball shaped tall- slender-necked decanters, matching coupe glasses and matching liquor glasses look very similar to Baccarat’s ‘Nancy’ pattern. The decanter shape is identical to mine, my jaw dropped when you pulled those out of the cupboards 👏🏻. Some of them were not etch marked in the early days. Or perhaps Val St. Lambert or Saint Louis Crystal? They’ll be stunning once cleaned up!! French Champagne in a French coupe in a French Chateau!!!

Wow! Its like finding buried treasure! And it is all so pretty! If you didn't want to keep it all, looks like you could have your own booth at the nearest brocante (love that word). I'd happily spend hours washing it all and finding ways to display everything. What a fun discovery.

I hit my head a few weeks ago so hard, I actually went down….. very slowly and nothing bad happened (besides me swearing). 😂😂😂. Stuart had to help me up from the floor. We will heighten that door. Morning Patrick & Stuart, before settling down to watch your video, power outage, 2 hours later, back in action. Clearing the outside walls you had new discoveries, how nice. The treasures inside the cupboards was great. Once all are washed and rinsed it would be beautiful. I can imagine the two pitchers sparkling with some beautiful red wine inside, how blessed. There are other lovely porcelain dishes and I am sure they are all going to be used at some stage. Nice to know your parents are spending the Festive Holidays with you, much reminiscing is coming up. The plates are Chinese in the Japanese style, 19th century. Take it from an art historian 😉 So called Imari (Japanese name) ware.

Hi David. We actually have freezing temperatures. 😮🥶😳. The hall is really cold but why heat a room we only walk through. Our kitchen and the linen room as well as our bedroom are nicely warm and the rest of the rooms are on defrost. 😘💗😘😳 We are excited to get the hall done tomorrow afternoon. We have plastering to do in the spring (too cold now). And painting….. then we will be really happy. Stay cool my friend. Love from us at Colombe. 🥰🥵😍

I hope they're not camera shy because I want to see them having a good time this festive season. 😊 I am curious to learn if the back kitchen wall conceals a door or a window...were any interior walls removed or added by the prior owners to make the space larger or more segmented? Seems like they wanted more wall space rather than light. Looking forward to the entryway enhancements. Happy Advent!

Hello Journey-Men! How exciting to find that closed up window or door. Imagine the possibilities if it was a portal to the past or today's Paris or London! What treasures you uncovered in the cupboards. Also the great discovery in the garden. That was pretty cool. I loved listening to you to talk about how each of you deal with “breaking “some thing at the Château. It just goes to show the deep respect you have for each other to allow the other one to just be themselves, when expressing their devastation in the recent carnage of whatever happened to break. Wow, I would love having some of the things you found. Lovely surprises so close to Christmas. If I knew that those cabinets had things left in them, I don't think I would have had the patience to wait like you did. My curiosity would have driven me nuts.
