This is a review of a top quality French wine from the region of Sauternes
Chateau Suduiraut (pronounced Sue Doe Row) has its origins in 1580 with the marriage of Leonard Suduiraut to Nicole Allard. Suduiraut has a long history of making excellent wines as it was rated one of 11 Premier Cru Sauternes in the 1855 Classification of Sauternes. It border Chateau D'Yquem, the only Premier Cru Superiore.
Suduiraut did have some difficulties in the mid 20th century but it was purchased by the Axa, the huge insurance conglomerate that also owns Pichon Baron, Pibran and Petit Village in 1992. Since then Suduiraut has been brought back to its former glory.
Suduiraut is quite a large estate with 90 hectares of vineyard. They also produce a white wine by this wine, the Chateau Suduiraut 2009, is made with 93% Semillon and 7% Sauvignon Blanc. It is fermented in stainless steel and it is aged in oak (55% new oak, the rest in one year oak) for between 16-24 months (sorry, that is not what I said on the video but in new vintages, there has been less Sauvignon Blanc used on the blend)
2009 was an exceptional vintage for Sauternes wines. The summer was hot and dry but the nights were cool and dry so that retained acidity for the grapes.. September was perfect for Sauternes: rain, enough and enough humidity allowed the grapes to develop botrytis and ripeness.
