You could call this a WIF - a What's It For? A wooden box, containing a very strange looking object. There are no clues until you pick it up and discover that the rubber tubes all have a little whistle at the end.
When you hold it in your hand and shake it to and fro it makes the chattering sound of a group of starlings. Made in France by a company that specialise in making objects that replicate the calls of birds.

A good friend of my mom's gave me a cricket whistle when I was a child, told me to play it at 3am for a nice surprise. The nice surprise, turns out, was my mom *pissed off* trying to find the cricket.

It's a sad fact that you have to move it back and forth. Because at every turn the whistles all briefly stop at the same time, which breaks the illusion of birds chattering. In fact it sounds more like the wind whistling in an object that moves back and forth. Which is what it is, of course.

I don’t quite know how they’re doing in their native Europe, but starlings are absolutely exploding in numbers in Canada, Australia, and the United States. It’s really impressive how the little guys have basically taken over the world. Down in SW Florida I’ve seen them flocking together with the native grackles. They’re so small compared to the grackles, but they seem to get along just fine.

All the European Starlings in North America descended from 100 birds set loose in New York's Central Park in the early 1890s. The birds were intentionally released by a group who wanted America to have all the birds that Shakespeare ever mentioned. It took several tries, but eventually the population took off And drove me insane until I had to get out the shotgun!
