इसी अवधि में ही आषाढ़ के महीने में भगवान विष्णु ने वामन रूप में अवतार लिया था और राजा बलि से तीन पग में सारी सृष्टी दान में ले ली थी. उन्होंने राजा बलि को उसके पाताल लोक की रक्षा करने का वचन दिया था. फलस्वरूप श्री हरि अपने समस्त स्वरूपों से राजा बलि के राज्य की पहरेदारी करते हैं. इस अवस्था में कहा जाता है कि भगवान विष्णु निद्रा में चले जाते हैं. इस बार चातुर्मास 17 जुलाई से 11 नवंबर तक रहेगा.
