In our school, there was an event to perform these kind experiments in front of people. It was actually our biology teacher not chemistry teacher, who encouraged and supervised us.

@backstreetfan2887

Wonderful video! For the "purple rain" part, what exactly are we seeing? Does the color come from the indicator? Or is a complex formed?
@chatzida
@chatzida 5 жыл бұрын
Take a look at 07:32 where you can see all the contents. The last solution is basic and the color comes from the combination of the fucchsia from phenolphthalein ans the vibrant blue of Cu(NH3)2+ complex.

About the chemical bar, Isn't CuSO4 blue in aq form? How did you make it transparent? I wanna use your experiment in our school festival, and It would be so helpful if you tell me the steps, please. Thank you:)
@chatzida
@chatzida 5 жыл бұрын
Actually if you look carefully at 06:25 you 'll see a pale blue liquid in the 3rd glass from the left: this is CuSO4 solution (I think 0.5M). With the addition of ammonia it turns to vibrant blue Cu(NH3)4 ++ complex

chatzida Oh! didn't see that... thank you so much! One more question, would it be OK if I use some other base instead of NH3, citric acid instead of HNO3, and thymolpthalein for CuSO4? We need to use safer chemicals as possible... and I wonder if there are anything we could use instead of Pb(NO3)2. Sorry, and thank you!
