Chauncey Billups is an American former professional basketball player turned coach, currently serving as the head coach for the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA. After a collegiate career with the Colorado Buffaloes, he was drafted third overall in the 1997 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. Spending the bulk of his 17-year playing career with the Detroit Pistons, Billups earned acclaim, notably winning the NBA Finals MVP in 2004, a title secured against the Los Angeles Lakers. His knack for clutch performances earned him the moniker "Mr. Big Shot." Throughout his NBA tenure, Billups garnered five NBA All-Star selections, three All-NBA nods, and two NBA All-Defensive team honors, showcasing his versatility across various teams including the Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Clippers.
Transitioning from playing to coaching, Billups initially worked as a studio analyst post-retirement in 2014. The Detroit Pistons honored his contributions by retiring his No. 1 jersey in 2016. Beginning his coaching journey as an assistant for the Los Angeles Clippers during the 2020-21 season, Billups was subsequently appointed head coach of the Trail Blazers in 2021. In recognition of his illustrious career, Billups was announced as an inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2024.
