Bought this LED light bar to benchmark it and use as part of a proof-of-concept for a system I am designing.

Awesome video, exactly what i was looking for. I wasn't expecting the design to have as much thought about heat dissipation as it actually did. Still a pretty crude product, but they are usually sold extremely cheaply.

They are still putting better light than my stock light does. all for 30 bucks with fuse protection.

nice review, this is the exact kinda of tests, I do with every light bar I come across and surprise surprise if you divide the power consumed by the number of chips you always end up with a very small fraction of what is claimed typically .5 watts per chip with the current generation of cheap light bars at the $20 to $50 price point, though it was not always like that, some of the early light bars actual where in the 1 to 1.5 watt per chip range, i miss those old bars lol .... These days i will not buy a light bar if they fail disclose the power consumption in amps at both 12 and 24 volts......... only a few companies do this tuffstuff is one of them... i plan to get one of there bars and test there ratings....

On some light bars the tiny screws hold down (pinch) the gaskets that seal the clear lens,this one didnt have gaskets or they were removed by someone else.

The gaskets shrunk after disassembly, manufacture must stretch them a bit when torqueing those bolts, probably saves them 20% in material costs.

While watching this, a thought occurred. Is it possible to interpolate the torque used to put something together by somehow measuring the release torque?
@MegaMechatronics
@MegaMechatronics 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I was involved in a few different benchmarking projects for automotive components at work and we measured break away torque using a digital torque wrench for every fastener. The torque readings should be slightly higher than the tightening torque, to be accurate you'd need to study the friction of the interface materials and any plating or thread locker to more accurately estimate reverse engineer it.

You'd think it would be cheaper for them to use the boards from the small 6-LED lights and just wire them up together inside the unit, instead of one giant board. That would make it easier to mod for a separate flood and spot selection.

Eh, maybe not, since then there would be a bunch of converter circuits, instead of one.

Is this generic or actually Auxbeam? I'm making 18650 battery pack and trying to work out the Amp Draw / ah.

I think you could've removed the five screws on each side of the bar. These would allow you to remove the metal strips that hold down the clear front shield.
@MegaMechatronics
@MegaMechatronics 8 жыл бұрын
+hmata3 At 2:18 I pause the end view, please note those 'metal strips' are actually part of the extrusion. The ends of each screw actually bottom out on the lens, horrible design as it does not spread out the load.

i bought a 126W~ one, its actually 40watt~ for those interested i installed it on my car, because the stock headlight were garbage and now that the plastic is fading its even worst. i couldn't even see the line on the road when i bought the car and feared to drive faster than 50km/h as it was too dangerous. i added the 142W light bar on the high beams. so i can turn them ON/OFF not to blind other drivers.
@juliogonzo2718
@juliogonzo2718 5 жыл бұрын
That's how I wired mine in my work truck. High beam fuses were only hot with high beams on, so I used a "add a circuit" fuse block tap to fire a relay. I also have a switch on the dash to "arm" the light. That way I can also use high beams without led to signal other drivers

any chance this could be made into a 3-wire setup? Isolating the 12 LEDs that are supposed to be spot beams would be awesome.

I think you could get some custom boards made and reverse engineer the locations of the new LEDs to match the reflectors. This way you could probably do anything you want with the LEDs. Good idea Mr. Freeze.
@misterfreeze8444

It was easy and works well. I was able to isolate the LED's by severing grounds on the printed board. I now have high and low beam for my motorcycle

Silicone sealants and grease are not compatible with polycarbonate plastic. It will cause the plastic to craze and crack. Look for leak failures in the future.

most light bars say 10 - 30 volts. more volts more watts.
@goofygal27
@goofygal27 6 жыл бұрын
No. Watts remain the same. As voltage increases, amps decrease. A lightbar @ 12v will draw 2x as many amps as the same bar on 24V...

I just finished testing my light bar. 1st 12 volt. 2nd 24 volt. the light got twice as bright on 24 volts. more volts more power...
@goofygal27
@goofygal27 6 жыл бұрын
Mr Nobody329 that's not how it all how it works. If it's getting brighter because you put 24 volts to it, then it's either not a multi volt light bar or the integrated regulation circuit is shit.

Well Ive seen some lights get brighter on more volts as well and why I don't know but with my limited but still more than average knowledge I don't think it should do so. It should only use less amps. It doesn't increase the wattage but even if this was possible to do so your LEDs are rated at a certain wattage and you will burn em out way faster running more than it's max rated wattage. So why in the fuck would you want to do this? I like my stuff to last as long as possible while working properly at the same time. But hey the state of Texas says the last grade I successfully completed was the 7th grade but I went to high school somehow ended up with a GED and an associates degree so don't listen to me with a 7th grade education🤣
